DS shivering and shaking

Tillsforthrills · 07/01/2021 18:20

DS has been told it’s in his best interest to attend lessons for exam prep for a BTEC exam therefore has been having lessons mixing with Year 12&13’s all week and will be next week. He is doing an A-level too but even though the exams for that were months ahead they’ve been cancelled. GCSE students and A-level students can stay home.

It has seemed so unfair that BTEC students have to attend and take the exam at the height of a pandemic in January if their school/college deems so.

Today he’s come home sneezing shaking and had to go and lay down saying his body aches so much. No temp or cough.

What should I do? Should I inform school? One of his tutors is off as she has covid so he has missed teaching time.

Department of Education has said the ‘student can decide’ but this is not the case for him and many others who have been told they must attend and that they’ll make it ‘as safe as possible’.

I’m so confused!

I had Covid and didn’t have a cough or a temp. The only symptom I had was a scratchy throat and feeling like I was coming down with something. I tested positive that same night. He should be isolating and getting a test. Hope he’s ok. Everyone else in the same house should also be isolating.

Quartz2208 · 07/01/2021 19:09

It sounds as if he has a temp so book a test and get him self isolating. It legitimately sounds like he has COVID. Positive tests here the two who had it neither had a temp, neither lost taste and smell and only one had a cough.

I would be recommending this separate to all the other stuff

CarrieCat · 07/01/2021 19:10

He sounds like someone with a fever

Tillsforthrills · 07/01/2021 19:19

I am so angry that the government has allowed unnecessary mixing and risk purely because he’s a BTEC student.

Yes he will isolate and test.

He’s beside himself with anxiety over it.

poor kid keep him off

Kylorey · 07/01/2021 19:31

I had chills and felt shivery but no fever when I had covid. I also sneezed a lot - sneezing and feeling shit were my only symptoms the first 4 days. Poor kid hope he doesn't have it on top of everything.

Theunamedcat · 07/01/2021 19:35

He can always retake it

MollyButton · 07/01/2021 19:36

Tell him to stop stressing. Lots of people do have to repeat bits of college/sixth form 9even degrees) due to illness. At present the Government is still "making it up" and no one can be sure how long Gavin Williamson will last (or even BoJo).
If you feel up to it then email your MP (of whatever persuasion).

whywhywhydaliah · 07/01/2021 19:37

My first symptom was shivering.

Groundhogdayzz · 07/01/2021 19:39

I’m really angry on his behalf, why cancel A levels and not BTEC. Makes no sense. Get him tested, just hope he isn’t too stressed out with everything now.

JanuaryChill · 07/01/2021 19:39

There will be a few who miss exams because of Covid/testing, they'll have a plan for such circumstances. Tell him not to worry. I work in a school and have worked for exam boards in the past.

Just concentrate on looking after him and keeping him calm and peaceful. Hope he gets better very soon, whatever the cause.

DobbyIsAFreeElf · 07/01/2021 19:40

In my experience working on a hospital ward, shivering/rigors often come before a high temperature. So although temp may be ok during the shivering I always check the patients temperature again no more than an hour later.

pilates · 07/01/2021 19:47

He cannot go in. Get him tested and isolate from the rest of family.

Tillsforthrills · 07/01/2021 19:47

Thanks so much for the reassurance all, he’s not letting me in his room for now as he says he needs time to think Confused

Really appreciate all of your kind comments.

@DobbyIsAFreeElf
Thank you, I’ll check right before bed and again in the morning. His teeth were chattering when he got in.

@Groundhogdayzz thanks for the solidarity. I hope the government is held to account for allowing exams at this particular time Angry

Haggertyjane · 07/01/2021 20:01

Very frequently when someone has a fever but has been out in cold weather, their temperature is normal. An hour or so lying in a warm bed and it usually shoots up to show the real temperature/fever.

MollyButton · 07/01/2021 21:41

And my DS works for a not very sympathetic employer - but even they have had to "put up with" employees being off for varying times with: possible Covid or contact with someone who had a positive test.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 07/01/2021 23:25

How is your ds doing?Flowers

Tillsforthrills · 08/01/2021 08:04

Indeed you were correct @DobbyIsAFreeElf @Haggertyjane he has a high temperature and has a very sore throat and headache now too.

There’s no way he can go in.

OP posts:
Tillsforthrills · 08/01/2021 08:05

@GiveMeAllTheGin8 thank you for the flowers, he’s stressed and Ill but I’m hoping it’ll be a quick recovery, fingers crossed.

OP posts:
Quartz2208 · 08/01/2021 08:50

You need to get him tested as well OP - if he is feeling that ill order a postal test they arrive the next day and if you send off can come back v quickly.

inquietant · 08/01/2021 08:55

I'd get him tested. Shivering = fever imo.

Sorry this happening to him.

movingonup20 · 08/01/2021 09:05

Sounds good old flu to me btw. Get a test but remember other nasty bugs still are available!

RandomMess · 08/01/2021 09:07

I hope he is on the mend quickly, it may be worth asking the GP for a sick note due to his exams for proof of extenuating circumstances? It does sound like flu.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 08/01/2021 10:21

Poor ds. Definitely no way he can go in. I’d imagine he would need a test either way . Fingers crossed for a quick recovery Flowers
