As a nurse whose worked during Covid I really feel that this episode of Casualty really summed up how we've felt during the pandemic. I found it really heart wrenching and think everyone should watch it.

No first hand from someone who works on the ward.

PinkSnowAndStars · 07/01/2021 19:42

I balled my eyes out. NHS staff... and it was very close to home.

I think they handled it beautifully

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 07/01/2021 19:44

Is it season 35 episode 1 that you're talking about please?

june2007 · 07/01/2021 19:46

Yes the latest casualty. I am not saying it wan,t done well, but i think for most it was a bit like watching a documentary or the news when you want something light hearted or since is caualty far fetched but plausable.

Bimbleboo · 07/01/2021 19:48

@MawkishHawk I don’t think there’s any shame in that at all. I’m sure many of us feel the same on some days, if not all. X

Taskmasterlover · 07/01/2021 19:48

@Lemonpiano I think if that is your experience of hospital then it's very sad and it should be heard. I do think people are voicing their experiences of covid especially on Twitter and it is been listened too, at least in my work.

I definitely agree that if people wouldn't find it beneficial for their mental health then they shouldn't watch it. There will be a lot of PTSD among hospital staff following this pandemic and I can't imagine how we are going to move forward.

I would say on my Covid Ward (my work) 75% of the nurses have been positive at some point.... not all at the same time! We also weren’t at work but off work poorly X

EternalOptimist7 · 07/01/2021 19:53

I read that there were real tears when Noel died because the actor who plays him was so well respected & will be very much missed on set.

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 07/01/2021 19:56

Very difficult to watch. Particularly the early months when they couldn't see what was coming. Watching with hindsight was heartbreaking Sad

Nunoftheother · 07/01/2021 20:19

@june2007

I don,t need to be made aware. My siter works on a ward, she told me everyone on the ward is positive and so are the nurses, ncluding those who have had the first vaccine.
Yeah, I'm sure that information is as accurate as your typing. Hmm
XaviersMum1 · 07/01/2021 21:21

@MawkishHawk

It’s not so much don’t want to hear it, as just trying to keep going, get through each day one day at a time with our own jobs and lives and responsibilities, and just do not have any spare emotional capacity to devote to an upsetting dramatisation right now - every real day is upsetting enough.

DP put this on the other night but I had to switch it off. Just can’t cope with anything like that right now, I can’t indulge in it, I can barely cope with each day of reality and need to spend the hour or so I have spare before falling asleep in relaxation or escapism, or I’ll implode.

I didn't check but I do hope there was sufficient warning before it started, I can easily understand how it works be too much for some

It will get there but it's wrong to just film like it didn't happen. Both shows mention issues that affect the NHS and tries to represent it. It would be odd to turn on to see no masks, the usual bonking in the supplies room etc

I think that's what's so awful, same with home and away. That point where we think we're running, nurses are flossing on the steps, locals are bringing in cake. Then fuck. It all goes to hell in a flaming handcart
Motorina · 07/01/2021 22:19

@Lemonpiano

And all the patients being traumatised? The dying people being forced to die completely alone with staff who don't even have two minutes to bother to tell them what's going on? The patients who are resorting to trying to care for other patients on their ward because the staff are ignoring them?

This is what I experienced as a patient. Why the fuck is this not being talked about? Why does nobody give a shit about the harm being inflicted on patients?

You know, patients being the reason hospitals exist?

The tragedy is what is happening to the patients.

Well, yes.

This is exactly what NHS staff have been saying for weeks. The issue isn't beds, it's numbers of staff. As more covid patients come in it means nurse:patient ratios worsen. Nurses have to care for more patients each. Patient care deteriorates and, eventually, becomes unsafe.

NHS staff have been saying this. It's not that nobody gives a shit. It's that they're drowning and can only do so much.

gamerchick · 07/01/2021 22:20

Casualty is back on?

itsgettingweird · 07/01/2021 22:22

I'm only 10 minutes in.

This is chilling Sad

EndOfTheRoadForMe · 07/01/2021 22:28

@june2007

Not doctors but a[parently most of the nurses.

Not true Hmm

canigooutyet · 07/01/2021 22:45

I haven’t watched it. Haven’t got a license so..
however even if I did I couldn’t watch it. Not because I don’t care, I do.
I’ve briefly spoken about my last hospital stay.
It’s not just those who are working there but patients as well who are also going to suffer badly mentally.
The number of deaths and other stuff was off the scale during those few days.
Someone was sent from admin to come talk to me and we all agreed on the ward it’s a liability waiting to happen.
Issues with getting food from the suppliers.
Beds removed ergo less patients.
Skeleton staff even during the day.
Allergies missed
Patients looking out for each other and telling staff to sod off having a go at dementia patients who were nil by mouth, and eating the food they had been given and left with. I’m not blaming staff they are incredibly over worked and understaffed.

Someone mentioned staff being positive and still working. This I can honestly believe from my experience. I’m not saying staff were positive just the staffing issue you can see why.
Because of a lack of porters at times it was the consultants taking us for tests.

This was end of November. I’m fucking shitting it going back in. And hope whatever infection is preventing surgery carries on. I’m an experienced hospital patient. I’ve been there when they’ve had flu, mrsa and more rip through. But this is on another scale completely.

They were passed breaking point then

itsgettingweird · 07/01/2021 22:55

No wonder I'm hearing reports of staff suffering ptsd.

This second wave must have brought panic.

Although I'm pretty sure my reaction of annoyance they mentioned the fabled one hour exercise is normal.

The whole thing is probably doesn't even touch the real horror so it's a shame they were so in accurate.

Brilliant coverage if amazes struggles due to her HI. Brilliant they've shown the struggles of disability and the feeling of not being able to support.

Madhairday · 07/01/2021 22:56

It was very well done and Amanda Mealing should get an award from it. It broke me, I sobbed for ages because I think the reality of it hit me really hard even though I knew it beforehand, just seeing the reactions of staff and patients, that woman saying goodbye to her family, then Noel dying. It is worth watching and hard to watch. I don't think it will change deniers minds because they already think it's all fiction anyway Sad

june2007 · 07/01/2021 23:02

End of the rd my sis is a doctor she said half staff are off and nearly all the nurses are positiive. She is not prone to lying.

itsgettingweird · 07/01/2021 23:11

Oh dear lord that broke me.

That's watching a drama show I've watched before many a time.

I cannot even imagine what the reality was like for the actual nhs staff on the front line.

itsgettingweird · 07/01/2021 23:13

Mad I remember the Leah Betts video about drugs. I was same age. I really think clips of this would be good to show younger people who haven't grasped the reality. It's so far from their imaginations and I'm not against shock tactics where necessary.

Respect to all frontline workers
