Was this illegal? What would you do?

Hi, (name change for this)

I need some clarification on what happened at my partners place of work.

SO..... My partner is a key worker. The incident happened just before Christmas.

My partners work colleague did not tell anyone about this until this week..... his wife tested positive at home, so did his child. The colleague still came to work even when he knew this. He had also taken the test before going into work. He went to work and worked with various others. Later on, he tested positive and has not since returned to work.

Partner and colleagues are absolutely furious now they know. They do not know what to do, as in whether to report to management or not.

  1. Is this illegal?

I have told my partner that this must be reported. But they all feel bad as they do not want the colleague to lose his job in these awful times.

  1. what would you have done? I would've gone straight to management. How dare this colleague be so STUPID!!!!!! ITS PEOPLE LIKE THIS THAT ARE THE ISSUE!!!!!

Depends is this actually the truth or office gossip? Who informed your husband and his colleagues this?

LawnFever · 07/01/2021 18:19

Did anyone else pick up covid at the workplace?

thesmilinggirlfriendx · 07/01/2021 18:24

@Daisysflowers it was the truth - the colleague who tested positive with COVID told colleagues afterwards as to why he wasn't at work including management obviously.

And also mentioned his wife was already positive with COVID! He said he did not want to tell anyone as he didn't resent to worry them??? Absolutely absurd as now everyone is worrying!

Do they still get paid if they don't go in under these circumstances?

thesmilinggirlfriendx · 07/01/2021 18:25

@LawnFever

@LawnFever not yet :/

@TheGreatWave yes they do, that's the thing we can't understand? Why would you come into work? Is he just thick? I don't get it , so irresponsible

You can’t get him arrested but the management can take action. They might well be doing so but they wouldn’t tell everyone.

TheGreatWave · 07/01/2021 18:29

Yeah he's an idiot then.

(I could perhaps be a little more sympathetic if not going in meant no pay)

EagleFlight · 07/01/2021 18:29

Illegal no but a sackable offence, yes. Would need to be proven though and sometimes by the time it’s been told through a few people the end story isn’t true.

BingBongToTheMoon · 07/01/2021 18:30

Other than to their boss (who already knows), who would you report this to?
He did wrong, absolutely, but if this was before Christmas anyone who would’ve caught it would’ve had it by now, I think they need to relax a little. They can get tested to see if they had and and were asymptomatic though, but what’s done is done.

Is the positive person now ill?

thesmilinggirlfriendx · 07/01/2021 18:34

@Countdowntonothing

Possibly not. I thought drs/nurses were exempt from contact isolation as they are constantly in contact with positive cases atm so would be permanently isolating?
@Countdowntonothing works in a different setting - can't really mention on here as it may give me away 🙈 sorry

@BingBongToTheMoon boss knows he is sick with COVID but does not know he came into work after being in contact with his wife and child who had already tested positive for COVID.

Well if he would have got paid then it was very foolish of him.

The management are aware it’s up to them how they go forward.

If this incident was before christmas I take it the 14 days are now up since anyone has seen him and no one else has come down with it?

@Orf1abc yes he is and is at home now

@thesmilinggirlfriendx then your husband should report it to their boss...obviously.

Bluntness100 · 07/01/2021 18:37

If this was before Xmas and no one was ill, other than being stupid, what exactly do you want to do here. It’s not even your colleague. It’s your husbands.

I assume you want this man punished in some way? Even though there was no Impact on you or yours?

@Daisysflowers well, tested positive on 24th but he's said he's not very well still so unsure when he will return!

@Orf1abc yes he is and is at home now

So he’s been ill since before Christmas? Is he seriously ill?

@Daisysflowers sorry and yes isolation is up now

He will get sacked. Up to your Dh and the others if they want that on their conscience I suppose.

EleventhNight · 07/01/2021 18:42

You’d have to prove his wife and child tested positive before OP. Most people will have Covid and not know and be at work/supermarkets etc before they are tested or get symptoms. Sad but true.

This, if people were going to have caught it they’d know by now, it’s been two weeks at least

Tbh much as what he did was wrong I don’t see what can be achieved now

thesmilinggirlfriendx · 07/01/2021 18:43

[quote LawnFever]**@Orf1abc yes he is and is at home now

@LawnFever ah sorry I don't know the ins and outs of this 😣 he's at home so I can't imagine he's terribly terribly ill but he's ill he says
