Don't expect your school to educate those attending

I am a keyworker as is my ex, we have 2 dds one in primary and one in secondary.

The secondary school is amazing and she is getting full lessons. Dd2 is at primary school where we have been told not to expect education but just childcare. they don't have enough electronic devices for the children to view the lessons on line. The teachers are at home streaming their lessons so the children have to view it on line only.

I can't believe it, that as a key worker, risking my health to keep others safe, my child is at a disadvantage due to having to attend school.

I am very close to taking annual leave so that I can home school but we are already chronically understaffed

I offered to send her in with an iPad but apparently she won't be able to access their WiFi.

Surely there must be an answer

I'm glad that you're happy with the secondary provision OP, I feel the secondary school I work in is offering far more than during the last lockdown.
I think we are looking to start testing all key worker students and staff shortly, which I know will reassure some of the very anxious staff who are working in school on the rota.
It will be interesting to see what happens when students/staff test positive. If, as the government says, 1 in 45 have the virus (in our area) then the logistics of providing the provision, coupled with the isolating key worker students and the implications on key workers having to isolate will be huge.

Our y5/y6 key worker bubble just burst with a child resting positive so now all home until 18th Jan which will be incredibly difficult for the people who genuinely need a space because they have 2 keyworker parents.

Tell them you expect your child not to be at a disadvantage. They are doing the same as last time, other schools have moved on, as have the requirements. I realise that there may not be a perfect solution (if the class is taught at school the background noise is difficult for those at home). But streaming at school should be possible, even if they have to mix classes. Or they could show oak academy or cbbc lessons.

Leave the debate who should, who shouldn't, my rights, their duty.

Take the easy route. Just buy a SIM card and problem solved.

Wow, first week in and it has happened already at your school. This will unfortunately be replicated all over the country.

The answer has long passed. The government promised enough tablets and laptops to ensure everyone had access, these were promised for September and have never materialised.

You can't have children logging into the school network on their own devices, it's not secure or manageable I'm afraid.

Can you print out the relevant worksheets for your child so they can be getting on with them at school?

At sons' school they take their own devices every day anyway, have been doing that for a while. All connect to the school WiFi when there so it can be done.

Only in areas which have good coverage. Rural schools will be struggling.

Ds's keyworker group are doing basically the same as the kids at home with a ta supervising. They don't need a device each as online lessons with their normal teacher and videos are played on a big screen so everyone in the class room sees then they work through their worksheets.
