Pupils with no laptop or space to study allowed to school

In case this is of help to anyone.

There are concerns some schools in lockdown could be inundated with pupils without laptops after a change to the vulnerable pupil list.
Pupils are learning remotely in England after schools were closed on Tuesday to all but children of key workers and those deemed vulnerable.
But those without laptops or space to study are now eligible to attend school, under government guidance

@robinwisperer

what would you suggest is fair on children the in overcrowded accomodation and with laptops. Not everyone had a big, house, own room and access to IT.
I've said since the beginning that they should open up libraries for these children. Put in support staff and let them access the remote learning the same way their peers do who have space at home and probably parental support.

Most of these pupils will also be FSM and should have hot meals delivered to them at these centres and also snacks and plenty of squash provided as being hydrated is important.

DBML i have an old laptop I have to a colleague who DH lost his job due to covid so her ds could study at home.

Also have an old iPad mini I've offered if anyone needs it.

I'm very much a believer in community

That’s so kind of you @itsgettingweird
Every little helps, but it’s so frustrating....it shouldn’t be down to individuals trying to rally some laptops together.

You sound lovely @DBML ☺️ You’re right, it shouldn’t and it shouldn’t take a 100 year old to find the NHS either 😁

Different schools seem to be different , some seem to if handed out laptops here and started in april/ may time.
One if the state schools here everyone has to have a chromebook when they start its like part of the uniform.
Yes we should help people out who need it but plenty will be complaining they can't afford one who actually can and then there isn't enough for those that need it.
I have had to buy one, I lost my job and we are struggling on one wage so I have had to order on my catalogue to spread out as we can just manage that and I know its important for him so will sacrifice other things, and then another child gets it ,who's parents really can't afford one and the choice may be food or a laptop.

@stivetoexpresso you don't conjure up another bedroom but if you have a dining table then couple kids can sit up or breakfast bar
My dh is wfh now he has had to set up in our bedroom on a desk that we had to buy -its shit bit that os what it is.
Ds 2 we have built a desk with drawers and worktop .
I get that for some families who are very overcrowded this may not be possible but for parents than can move things around etc , they should try, lots of kids won't be in their own room and space home learning but this is what lots wanted schools closed or blended learning

I have read that some providers in England are going to be providing a set amount of free gbs to some families who are classed as disadvantaged/vulnerable.

Apparently one company has already given out quite a lot of sim cards to help with free Internet on it.

Obviously that doesn't solve the issue at all but it is some help even though I know it doesn't solve the issue for everyone who is needing extra assistance.

At least it should help some children who need it.
