What is everyone's school experience? I am going a little crazy. We have live online learning of 2 increments of 30mns (maths & english) a day + homework that we have to supervise.

What is everybody else's experience?
The school is relying entirely on us to do the work.

My DS (7) has no live lessons at all. Some of the other parents are now asking for it. I'm getting fed up of the pointless and ridiculously easy tasks they're setting him, and frustrated that they're not interested in the effort he's making into the bits he actually struggles with (handwriting). Tempted to give up!!
Fed up after 3 only days? Seems a bit premature to me to be expecting it all to be fully tailored to your particular child already, after only 3 days, when they’re still dealing with people too technologically incompetent to have even logged in at all, yet.
StacySoloman · 07/01/2021 18:21

@isobel79

Glad I'm not the only parent finding this home schooling a bit adhoc. Son logs in at 9am till 915am. Then is given a task. Logs back on at 1030am. Then given a task till 11am. Then logs off till 1pm. Then log back on for about 15 mins. Then logs off and logs back on at 230 for story time. Then that's it...... Days finished. 🤔🤔🙄
That sounds like loads for a child in Reception, they're supposed to be playing? In school they'd only have a few short sit down sessions and maybe an adult led task every day anyway.

If the work is easy and he can finish in short period of time, I think I would be quite happy that I can concentrate on the bits the child struggles with like hand writing. That's one thing which needs actual physical work by children at home to get better, if that doesn't come naturally.

Dd year 6 - no live or recorded lessons. About 1.5 hours of worksheets posted to Google classroom per day. Frustrating when I'm working for 8.5 so she's entertaining herself aka on her phone 7 hours a day Sad

OhMickyYourSoFine · 07/01/2021 18:50

No live sessions, but recorded assembly/stories/ messages a few times a day, teachers are continually messaging and marking the work as soon as it’s uploaded throughout the day. All daily tasks are uploaded each morning with recorded demonstration videos. They’ve provided lots of useful links for free learning sites too.
Headteacher has already given us a phone call too.
I can’t fault them, I think they’ve done phenomenal considering they found out on Monday night.

I’m glad they didn’t go down the live lesson route, not everyone has the correct devices/ enough devices for all children/ decent WiFi etc.
Also they still have to teach/supervise the children who are at school and I’m fairly certain not all teachers are in.

Livefortherain · 07/01/2021 19:01

45 minute zoom chat daily. The chat is for socialisation with friends and the teacher, they go over a piece of work and then the teacher reads some of a book.

Other than that, we are set 3 daily tasks to do on an app. We are not forced to do the work. If we don't do it, that's okay.

They like to see other things that the kids are doing too - like baking, walking etc.

I'm happy with that, it's plenty enough for us.

SummerHouse · 07/01/2021 19:04

We have 30 mins live a week. That's 30 mins too much for us but needs must as the devil drives...

BubblyBarbara · 07/01/2021 19:32

Look at America where schools are also shut. Full day long live classes and supervision.. it’s amazing what an actual first world country can do.

@Monkeytennis97

Secondary teacher here. All lessons live following normal timetable.
Me too.
BubblyBarbara · 07/01/2021 19:37

What a nightmare.

It means parents can actually work from home rather than the half arsed job many people are doing here.

noblegiraffe · 07/01/2021 19:40

I’m going to email my DD’s primary school, thank them for their hard work and re-iterate that we DO NOT want live lessons.

Haggertyjane · 07/01/2021 19:44

The little one is sat in front of his teacher on the laptop for several hours a day, doing his schoolwork. Hooray! I don't have to do much (unlike last time)

GoodQueenAlysanne · 07/01/2021 19:46

Everything is uploaded online, I print once a week, separate out into folders, ds does the work with me chiming in with suggestions now and again, then we photograph and share with teacher (daily) via an app who, the teacher then comments on the work, usually a brief paragraph or two.

noblegiraffe · 07/01/2021 19:46

That’s not necessarily a good thing.

I do live lessons for my class of 11 year olds. I cannot supervise them. When I am teaching, I can't even see them because we all need to see my slides. Even when I am just answering questions and can see them, I cannot supervise them. If they wanted to, they could just wander off!

newstart1234 · 07/01/2021 19:47

Mine have one hour a day live, primary school, and they are great. Thank you to all the teachers out there, you’re a lifeline for the kiddies 👏🏻☺️

notevenat20 · 07/01/2021 19:48

We have 30 minutes a week.... yes a week. To be fair to the teachers 40% of the school is in and they hadn't planned for that. I think they need to work out how to have a live zoom link in the class all day.

Thislittlefinger123 · 07/01/2021 19:49

No live or prerecorded content, just lists of work to do and accompanying worksheets. When the children in school are getting full teaching it's shit, basically. They're prioritising the children that are in.

Delatron · 07/01/2021 19:53

Yes we have a third of the kids in our school too.

Live link is a good idea. Those that can’t join can access the recording.

KindnessCrusader · 07/01/2021 19:54

If it's secondary that's not a lot-we have 5 hours live teaching a day.
Primary it's loads-we have no love teaching, and a 15 minute live class 'catch up' every day.

anothermansmother · 07/01/2021 19:56

My ds (14) is having a minimum of 50% live learning per day ( today was 100%). Dd (10) is having no live learning but gets work set daily and a daily email. I think they will be having a live meeting soon as they did when they had to isolate.
I teach secondary and we have to do a minimum of 50% live, I've just taught live each lesson and then the students submit their completed work to me online and I give them feedback. However I haven't had to go into school yet, so I know the days I'm in school next week with kids I won't be able to teach live lessons as it won't be the same year group as the class each time. I know my friend who teaches primary has been I everyday and hasn't done any live lessons as 22 of her class of 28 are in anyway, whereas I know there are 6 including my dd (when she has to go in a couple of days next week) so I think it depends on how many children are in as to how much they are doing in school too.
Call the school if you want more live stuff and ask.

Delatron · 07/01/2021 19:56

Live lessons are not a nightmare.
For my DS in yr7 they have been a god send. And for working parents. I can’t sit and help/supervise.

I need someone else to direct them and teach them.

Last time it was a nightmare.

I think live makes far more sense in secondary

Yr11 get them here and they are excellent.

But yr 6 I’m better with non live
