If you lost your sense of smell

when did it happen? I had my first symptoms 9 days ago and tested positive 4 days ago. A lot of my major symptoms have died down (muscle aches, eye pain, bunged nose) but I suddenly can't smell anything this morning. I thought if this happened it would be at the start Sad

When did you lose yours and when did it come back?

Lost my sense of smell on around day 7, when I already felt better! Took 3 or 4 weeks to come back. Completely ok now.

BrokenCircle · 18/01/2021 23:10

My sense of smell loss was once I started to feel better, bizarrely. I’m now nearly three months and my sense of smell is still awry.

TransplantedScouser · 18/01/2021 23:48

Lost mine - was second symptom after a cough but this was back in May before we could be tested. In 44 years I’ve never lost sense of taste and smell so combined with a cough and a fever - I regard myself as having covid.

January - I can taste and my sense of smell is low variable. Some days I can and some days I can’t. Which is annoying as I’m a good cook. I can taste always but smell varies. The only consistent thing is I can’t stand the smell of cooking garlic - but I love the taste

Lost sense of smell and taste in day 5 in early November. I can now taste some flavours but a lot of food tastes ‘off’. Sense of smell has not properly returned and can only smell something faintly if I really sniff something. Not being able to smell is a strange sensation.

I lost mine on the 10th jan, still not got it back. DH lost his on the 7th, he’s had his back about five days 😡

Neenan · 19/01/2021 19:14

*8th not 7th

WanderingMilly · 19/01/2021 19:20

I lost my sense of smell about day 7, I think.....certainly well into the illness. It doesn't go at the beginning although for those who are virtually asymptomatic, it can be the only symptom they have and so it seems as though that's the start of their illness.

My smell/taste came back quite quickly but I don't think they've ever come back fully....

WednesdayWoohan · 19/01/2021 19:24

Taste and smell went on Christmas day. Still not totally back to normal.

spiritofvodka · 19/01/2021 19:25

Lost mine after about 5 days of symptoms starting. I really hope it comes back as I can't smell anything at all and can only taste a very mild sweet taste that taste artificial when I eat anything sweet.

JudyGemstone · 19/01/2021 19:43

My partner has covid last April and still hasn't got his taste/smell back properly!

Ohbuggeroffcovid · 19/01/2021 23:26

Mine still isn’t back! I can only smell things I put my nose right up to and inhale deeply. Taste is on its way back and with it the weight gain.

whereisthejoy · 20/01/2021 13:26

Been doing some work on smell training in the last few days and few like it's really helped. That, or it's making me and DH realise there was more there than we were aware of.

whereisthejoy · 20/01/2021 13:26

Feel* like

Ohbuggeroffcovid · 20/01/2021 13:28

Ooh what’s smell training?

Downriver · 20/01/2021 13:54

Mine is only about 40% of what it was, after 5 weeks. What is smell training?

whereisthejoy · 20/01/2021 15:38

I read if there is some smell ability there, we should be smell training:

I started feeling under the weather - achy, headache, sneezing etc on a Sunday (thought I had a cold or was run down after a busy few weeks), then started coughing on Wednesday so isolated and booked a test, tested Thursday (had a burning sensation in nose that made the swab painful), positive result Friday. Smell started going over the weekend and was gone completely by Monday. Completely absent for about 4 days. Now a month later things smell distant and I can smell things that aren't there, such as burning.

Tumbleweed101 · 20/01/2021 18:48

My dd tested positive with no symptoms on a lateral flow test. Mild cold symptoms after this and then lost smell and taste on day 5 after the test (she did the main test too same day as lateral flow result). Her sister had a nasty headache and temp about five days later and then lost smell and taste three days later.

Tumbleweed101 · 20/01/2021 18:49

They both got smell and taste back between 7-10 days after losing it.

Chickenfingers · 20/01/2021 20:55

I got a test done this morning cos I lost my sense of smell all day yesterday,I had a wierd pressure in my nose but it was completely unblocked. I woke up this morning and my sense of smell was incredibly strong. I'm hoping the test comes back negative now.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Note - I also felt headachey and exhausted, and like I was coming down with something. As the main person who leaves the house it felt right to do, but feel I may have over panicked!

findingschools4myboys · 20/01/2021 22:33

I lost mine 2 weeks into having symptoms. Lasted about 3/4 weeks - I think might be slightly less.
Hubby also lost his around 2 weeks after initial symptom and only has it slightly back now 10 months later.

CovidJabToday · 20/01/2021 22:37

I can't remember when I lost my sense of smell - maybe a few days in. But I definitely remember it took over 4 months to come back! Glad it did come back!!

Ohbuggeroffcovid · 20/01/2021 22:44

10 months!? How is his taste?
