Getting sick note for stress?

Frazzledmum55 · 06/01/2021 21:02

Without going into too much detail, o have Avery stressful home life and even before the lockdown was considering going to the doctor and asking to be signed off work for a couple of weeks with stress just so I could clear my head whilst the kids were at school and get back on track.
I usually cope pretty well but I have been finding things tough (not necessarily covid related)
Then lockdown happened and now I’m under even more stress. I really feel like my mental health will decline and if it does I worry I’ll struggle to get back with so much to deal with. I need to stay on top of things.
I’ve been considering asking to be furloughed, or part time furloughed for childcare reasons, but not sure how my manager would take it and don’t want to piss my team off either of it seems unfair. Quite a few of us were furloughed last time but business was closed, now it’s not.
My other option is to get a doctors note but again I don’t want to piss off my manager.
If I ask for furlough and she says no, I can’t then get a sick note.
My job is also not secure anymore but I honestly feel like I don’t care right now.
Can I get in trouble for getting signed off with stress? Will I get ssp?

Talk to your GP about what is happening and how you feel.

Obviously you shouldn't post the details of your issues online but you should be able to be honest with your GP.

I honestly see nothing wrong with being signed off if you are struggling.

Take care

Id say if your that stressed, if it's affecting your sleep, diet, mood, nightmares , grinding teeth ... For example then regardless you should see your doctor. They might be able to prescribe something also.

Ask to be furloughed. Explain to your employer how extremely stressful it is to work and do fulltime childcare and that you fear you won't cope with doing two fulltime jobs instead of one.

If they refuse furlough they can't be surprised if you will have to be signed off for stress has you have made your situation clear.

In any case you should speak to your GP about how you are feeling.

The work situation is a bit more complicated. Employer knows my children are entitled to school places but it’s not as straight forward as that. They really aren’t coping at all with so many things.

My employer knows everything I have going on but isn’t the most empathetic person.
So I technically can’t be furloughed for childcare reasons, but I can in a sense if I need to be home with them. But I don’t know if I can cope with that at the moment either.

I’m ok. There are people much worse, I’ll get through. Just could really do with a breather.

Oh please don't just struggle on. Speak to your GP and get a bit of time.

If they are entitled to school places then take that up for a start just to relieve the pressure. Doesn't have to be every day. Just some as if you already felt like you already needed to be off sick even with the kids are at school.

Talk to your gp how you feel - I did some years ago and was hoping for a couple weeks off. He signed me off for 3 months, councilling and antidepressants! Guess I was worse than I thought I was! Turns out I needed all of it. Talk to your dr.

I’m worried about doing it. Will I get ssp? I think my manager will be pissed off.
