Should Holidays abroad be allowed even when lockdown ends?

Other countries have this policy and done well , should we consider this policy?

Would you want foreign holidays banned if they meant more freedoms here as in bars restaurants and cafes opening fully?

My family are Irish and I’ve not seen my mum since March.... I’m going ASAP.

PicsInRed · 06/01/2021 18:43

There won't BE any holidays if we're all broke from repeated lockdowns. At least if we close the borders for a bit, we might be able to reduce spread, open up internally, have a few internal hols and recover our own economy so we can...pay for the NHS.

CheltenhamLady · 06/01/2021 18:46

@QueenOfLabradors, that surely depends on where you travel to and how? Our holidays usually cost far more than that.

Also, at what stage of your life you are. We are approaching early retirement and want to travel the world, and fully expected to be able to do that. Sadly, that hasn't panned out but we are hopeful it will.

fallfallfall · 06/01/2021 18:46

I think it can be managed safely. Especially with vaccines and testing.

QueenOfLabradors · 06/01/2021 18:48

With reference to people travelling in order to see family - this is one reason I don't want to see an outright ban. Like so many of us, I have relatives who I haven't seen for a year or more, the intercontinental ones we used to see every two years on average. Fifty - plus years ago visiting relatives who were an ocean or two apart was something that took loads of planning and loads of time. Maybe we just need to factor that back in, accepting that this time it's not the length of the sea voyage but the quarantine at either end.

QuentinInQuarantino · 06/01/2021 18:55

@QueenOfLabradors I doubt you'd feel that way if you were the only one of your family living abroad, or had a child away on Erasmus.

As long as our staycation collegues especially in Cornwall dont start charging their rip off prices as in the summer. I looked at a week in Cornwall for four of us in the summer and the prices were shocking.

I went to Ibiza instead.....

And no, for me the weather is the killer. I am not paying ££ to end up having to stay in because its cold, pouring down (or both!)

Asking people to self isolate was never going to work. I carefully filled in my locator form when returning from Spain. I wasnt asked for it and no one called me. The chaps sitting behind me on the plane hadnt filled it in at all and said if they were asked they would do in the UK. Needless to say they werent asked either!

ChaToilLeam · 07/01/2021 09:26

I would like to see my parents at some point this year. We do not live in the same country. It’s not just about having a jolly. Happy to be vaccinated and think that will become a condition of travel.

bluetongue · 07/01/2021 09:38

Is it really that hard to put off travelling abroad until the pandemic is under control? It’s true my outlook is coloured by living in Australia and not being able to travel anywhere at the moment.

My solution has been to set up a travel fund. I’m watching my money grow and I know that I will be able to have a really amazing trip once it’s safe.

Fair enough that it’s hard for those with family abroad but I just don’t understand how you can complain about not being able to travel when the economy in the UK is being screwed by another lockdown and the hospitals are about to be overwhelmed.

Katie517 · 07/01/2021 09:40

Yes they should go ahead. The travel industry is on its knees and all those saying “just furlough them” there isn’t a bottomless pit of money for things like this we will all end up paying it back eventually and a lot of people are sick of sitting at home on furlough and want to get back to the jobs they love! People went away over the summer it didn’t cause huge issues (schools and unis going back did) my family love to travel and would usually be abroad 3/4 times a year we are desperate to take my little girl on her first holiday abroad so as soon as it’s legal to do so we will be going (taking all precautions and following rules of cause). The people saying ban them are obviously people who either enjoy UK holidays or have never been interested in travel, for some it’s very important.

flattyres · 07/01/2021 09:45

my parents live abroad (I am an expat). they are elderly and they are, apart from the DC, the only family I have. I will be on my way as soon as we can again. they are elderly and it has been heartbreaking. we haven't been able to see each other for 18 months now. I don't care if people judge.

cheesebubble · 07/01/2021 09:55

Is there even any evidence that travelling abroad has actually caused more infections? Nobody is travelling and we have 60+k cases a day. Why would you suspend travel when the case loads goes back to manageable if it's actually out of control when nobody is travelling? That I don't understand.

Blue565 · 07/01/2021 09:57

Don't forget at the moment UK nationals are barred from travel to any EU nation for 'holiday' (only residents or job visa holders can travel)

We are also barred from travel the USA and various other nations.

The decision may be made for us

Katie517 · 07/01/2021 10:01

@Blue565 we are welcome in the Caribbean, Mexico and Dubai at the moment and hopefully once restrictions loosen more places too.

Bythemillpond · 07/01/2021 10:03

I think they should push staycations this year

I can’t afford to holiday in the UK. Anywhere decent is so expensive

UpShutTheFuck · 07/01/2021 10:12

@QuentinInQuarantino

And what about those of us who live overseas and haven’t seen family in a year? Don’t we count?

My dc was 2 when she last saw her gps and will be nearly 4 by the end of this lockdown.

Yes this!

Not everyone travelling abroad is going on holiday.

I live in a different country to my daughter. I haven't seen my grandchildren for almost a year. I missed my grandson's first birthday and will soon miss his second.

My daughter has been trying to work from home with two small children and the schools/nurseries closed for much of that time.

We don't have the option of a "bubble" for childcare, or accidentally bumping into each other in the park.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2021 10:29

School is essential.

Holidays abroad are not.

They are to people working in the travel industry.

Like a previous poster holidays are the one reason I haven't left my job. I've booked UK holidays for this year but can't wait to go abroad again

cheesebubble · 07/01/2021 10:51

@PinkSparklyPussyCat would you consider travelling abroad to see your mother and father with your children a holiday?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2021 11:11
@PinkSparklyPussyCat would you consider travelling abroad to see your mother and father with your children a holiday?
No, obviously not. I was quoting another poster.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2021 11:12

Sorry, I hit post too soon.

I don't think of that as a holiday at all, I was trying to make the point that while some people wouldn't consider a holiday essential it's pretty essential if you are working in the travel industry and your job depends on it

cheesebubble · 07/01/2021 11:24

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I completely misread that then! Sorry!! I do think people should be able to see their families if abroad. Holidays are at everyone's discretion if you follow the rules over there and here when you come back.

Jessuk86 · 07/01/2021 12:17

I hope so as I have my hen do booked in Spain and my wedding in zante this summer rearranged from last year! But at the same time if we have to postpone again so be it, we might just do a quick registry office one so DD and I have the same last name when she starts school (if she starts school 🤣) as that’s important to me xx

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2021 13:03

No worries, it wasn't very clear! I agree people should be able to see their families and, if things improve and people follow the rules, then I see no issue with holidays. The travel industry needs all the help it can get right now.

Kokeshi123 · 07/01/2021 13:47

I think that as vaccines roll out and faster, more accurate tests are calibrated, foreign holidays should become OK, with the amount of quarantine required after testing being progressively rolled back. Not sure about a timeline but maybe after the summer this year. Till then, borders should remain closed other than for the vaccinated and those who are prepared to quarantine for a while. I also live overseas and hate not being able to visit family but there is a pandemic going on right now.
