School requested my child attend school fulltime even though I'm part time

Title says it all really. I have one child who is school age. I am a key worker who works Monday-Wednesday. The school have asked that all children of key workers attend five days a week. So my child could go in on days I am not working.

I could say no, and I probably will. But my point is, should they be doing this? I was under the impression that school attendance was to enable parents to work, but by offering childcare on days that parents aren't working this is going to put children together for longer and increase risk of transmission?

For example, if a child in my sons class displays symptoms on Saturday my son would have been exposed on Thursday and Friday and is far more likely to contract the disease. If he had been at home with me then he would be less likely, and therefore less transmission between people.

With regard to provision, each school is offering what they can. This time we are adamantly offering education, not childcare therefore placd is mon to fri 9am til 3pm. There is no way we could keep track if they did part time!

Quoting a friend I was chatting with earlier. She is the deputy head of a primary school.

The point I think the OP is trying to make is that it is very much all.of our business as we should be trying to limit contact to reduce the infection rate. I mean how long do we want this Lockdown to go on for! I am entitled to a key worker space but this is ludicrous as I work in a couple of schools in a fairly unusual job, where I am the only person carrying it out. My job in the private sector would not be 'essential'and yes it is hugely disruptive and I have to work later in the day to catch up with my work from home but like my husband who is an Architect it's something we both have to suck up. Morally, I won't be taking my place up as I think it is not for the greater good. The point of limiting numbers is the 'whole' point, people should question this or themselves or we are looking at a summer, autumn return!!

Oh op get off your high horse. It’s not wrong, it’s the SCHOOL POLICY.

winterchills · 06/01/2021 20:37

That's so odd! They absolutely shouldn't be saying that. Our school has made it clear that the key worker children should only go in on the days which parents are working which obviously is common sense x

Children in school are doing the same work as children at home, they are just doing it in a different place, supervised by someone else.
Do you really think there are enough teaching staff to deliver two different types of education?
Every child will get a minimum of three hours a day, where they get it isn't relevant.

Interesting - a few days ago the majority of posters were keen for schools to close, now it seems that everyone is annoyed that kids of key workers might have an educational advantage by attending school!! You cant have it both ways, a key worker needs a school place for their child unless you expect them to take them the kids to hospital with them or to the supermarket. If the school is adopting a full time approach there is probably a good reason for it. Or if you would prefer lets close the supermarkets and not give anyone healthcare and see how long we all survive. Am sorry but everyone needs to get a grip, there is no ideal solution to this shit show of a pandemic
