anyone else not getting a school place for their vulnerable child?

I have 2 DC on the vulnerable list. DC 1 has severe autism and and ehcp and attends a SS. School is closed. DC2 is classed as a young carer and should be offered a place too but school is only accepting key worker children.

Are there others who fall under the 'vulnerable' category who are let down too?

This will be hell for us - again. DC1 cannot learn remotely, we only have 1 laptop which I need to work (yes, I am supposed to work on top) and DC2 doesn't cope with DC1 24/7.

I really was hoping that at least DC1 could attend this time round Sad

That's awful! Can you contact your MP?

robinwisperer · 06/01/2021 07:53

hahaha. he is a useless Tory cunt who despises the disabled.

Your child with a disability should definitely have a place, that’s terrible!

Nonamesavail · 06/01/2021 07:56

What have school said?

Sirzy · 06/01/2021 07:57

I don’t know how specialist schools are getting away with fully shutting, they should be expected to have some level of provision in for those families who need it.

Mumdiva99 · 06/01/2021 07:57

Why is the SS closed? Talk to your LA if the school aren't being helpful.

PicsInRed · 06/01/2021 07:58

If DC1's school is closed, it may he that hub schools don't feel able to care for DC1. I think that DC2 is your best chance of a school place. Have you laid out all the home circumstances in an email to the Head, explaining how it will be impossible for DC2 to learn at home and emphasising that DC2 is actually vulnerable herself?

You may also find there is movement on this as they figure out the level of demand, but you'll need to really push - in writing.

@Nonamesavail

it is a SS. All kids have an ehcp. open to key worker children only. no what's and it's.

But even with an ehcp not everyone will need a place. They should surely find a way to offer something even if just a day or two a week

They won't. I spoke to them. They can only accommodate key worker children or those who are 'extremely' vulnerable. Whatever that is. but won't apply to my DC I am told.

Have you considered asking the Local Authority for/have you had an assessment from a social worker in the Children with Disabilities service?

Two points;

  • you can use this to request respite if required to prevent family breakdown
  • your social worker will likely advocate on your behalf for school provision (rather than want to fund respite)
Angel2702 · 06/01/2021 08:14

Eldest has EHCP and was offered a place. Youngest who has the same diagnoses and far greater needs doesn’t have EHCP so not offered a place. In fact there was no mention of SEN places at all only two keyworkers families but school not safe so please don’t send them message.

never had respite (always turned down), never had a proper assessment (despite asking) and no social worker either. We got always palmed off with the 'DC is not deemed at risk' BS.

You need to keep an eye kn the guidence for SS. It will be updated in the next few days.....i'm surprised it hasn't yet. Then I think you will have some clarity. Good luck.

I’ve been lucky in a way because only my dd has autism and an ehcp but the school have said all 3 of my children can attend. It’s a mainstream which I’m glad we chose especially now as they’ve been more than happy to have them in.
