Single parent key worker - wfh - no provision!

Scottishmum1984 · 05/01/2021 22:07

I might get flamed for this, but I am very upset so please, please be kind!

But just been told I can't have key worker place as I can do my role from home. I'm a single parent to two primary aged children and work full time, very long hours in a full on job, not a chance I can supervise home learning and I work Monday to Friday.

Am I wrong to think I should still get key workers place?

I would kick up a fuss tbh

rolliy · 05/01/2021 22:26

Personally I think single parents should be high priority.

alliejay81 · 05/01/2021 22:27

Talk to your employer, see if you can work in an office? I'm critical worker but can wfh and one of my colleagues did this last time. Otherwise, double check with your LA, last time our school pulled all sorts of stuff they weren't supposed to and had to be overridden by the LA.

LoopyGremlin · 05/01/2021 22:29

My council (Edinburgh) has the same rules. Two keyworker parents (1 if single parent), both working outside the home and no friends or family to help are the rules for getting a space. Very difficult for so many people. Sad

PolarExpressislate · 05/01/2021 22:29

How can you be a home working Key worker?

PegLegTrev · 05/01/2021 22:29

Totally ridiculous expectation of any parent.

Nonamesavail · 05/01/2021 22:30

I thought the bubbles didn't need to have a size limit this tine?

BunsyGirl · 05/01/2021 22:31

@PolarExpressislate I have a number of GP friends who are working from home. Do you think that they are key workers?

nex18 · 05/01/2021 22:31

@Scottishmum1984 I didn’t mean are you a keyworker, I meant have your employer not put it in writing that you are and require a school place? I have been provided with a letter from my employer although I don’t actually need school places as my children are teenagers and can log onto the online platform without my help.

Nonamesavail · 05/01/2021 22:32

How can you be a home working Key worker?
My husband works for benefits. He has personal phone calls and he cant be distracted when doing sums etc.
Scottishmum1984 · 05/01/2021 22:32

@LoopyGremlin Same rules as my Scottish local authority then. Sorry to hear that. It's very unfair!

I wonder if the WFH key worker rule is a Scottish Government thing then judging by comments here, it doesn't seem to be the same in England.

GP's working from home? Wow assessing patients over a phone whilst all other medical staff crack on and visit patients. Shocking.

Scottishmum1984 · 05/01/2021 22:34

@nex18 Hmmm they would happily write me a letter explaining why I need the space. But the school is adamant working from home key workers don't get a place at the hub school. I wonder if it is Scottish wide rule..

I’m lucky that we meet the criteria so have a space two days a week. I know lots of people who don’t have a space though and are really struggling. I hope you can get something sorted.

Sallycinnamum · 05/01/2021 22:36

I am considered a keyworker, DH isn't and we both can WFH.

Both my DCs school have said we can have a keyworker place if we want to and haven't asked for proof of whether we are working at home or not.

chopc · 05/01/2021 22:37

If a key worker can work from home how is their situation different from somebody in another job who also has children to look after? Why is their situation any less shit. I assume they will need to work in order to keep their job

Scottishmum1984 · 05/01/2021 22:38

@Sallycinnamum I wish my school was the same!

Theres plenty of other non keyworker roles this also applies too. In fact I'm not sure there's many jobs that distractions from children are easy to work through

Christmasfairy2020 · 05/01/2021 22:39

You get your boss to write a letter saying you are needed at work and it is not possible to wfh.

Yes, of course...but we fit the criteria by both being on the K
Nonamesavail · 05/01/2021 22:40

Keyworker list, plus 2 children with SEN. So we are sending them.

starrynight19 · 05/01/2021 22:44

I think the issue is in England you would certainly get a place.
The problem we are now finding is that so many parents are keyworker that schools are now ‘closed’ with 50-70 percent of children attending that’s a problem to.
I’m sorry op , hope you get something sorted. Surely employees have some responsibility here to help to.

Wasn't implying you shouldn't just pointing out that your situations aren't unique and others are in the same boat work wise. Hell I'd be the first one to send my dc in if I could

Is there any evidence that 50-70% of children nationally are still attending school?
