Learning at home Support thread

This isn't a teacher-bashing thread nor a questioning lockdown thread. It is not about complaining about provision but just for support of those with their DC now out of school

I'm not going to lie I've been struggling. I have post-Covid fatigue and Long Covid and I am exhausted all the time. On top of this I have found it hard to get anything else done as my DD (8) needs a lot of support. The pastoral care teachers for both my DC were meant to be coming round tomorrow and I was so looking forward to getting some support. But now due to Lockdown it is just going to be a quick catch- up on the doorstep. I'm gutted 😢

The work provided by school is fine - it is a timetable over Google classroom using Oak Academy and online platforms. There will also be some videos from the teachers. The only problem I have is there seems to be an expectation that it is all completed and while I'm I'm sure for some this is no problem it takes my DD a while to complete each piece with support from me. Yesterday - we did 2 and a half lessons out of 5 (2 Maths, 1 English, 1 PE plus reading) plus practiced her instrument.
Today we finished the English, did reading, then she did some Arts and Crafts. Then we started on the Maths for today and have still not finished it! She was falling asleep in the end so we stopped. Hoping we can speed up a bit as she gets used to the technology and won't need me as much. My eldest also needs attention. The eldest needed to use my notebook today so was doing DD's work on my smartphone. At times we were stopped as I needed to make a call/answer a message.

As far as I can tell we just upload whatever onto the weeks timetable on google classroom meaning we can only hand it in once the work is all done. Does this sound right? I have asked but noone has answered as yet.

How are others getting on?

I'd say it's a bit mean if you can only upload once it's all done. I'd love to see anything my class have managed to achieve - they all have different abilities and will be able to achieve different quantities.

I'd give your child's teacher a ring and discuss your concerns, if she's anything like me, she'll be more than willing to talk to you about all of your concerns and woul rather you talk to her than worry about it :)

I'll speak to the pastoral care teacher about it tomorrow.

Op in that case you need to focus on English and maths.

Find out what she needs to work on and concentrate on that. The 1:1,teaching will be quality over quantity so don't worry about endless hours and hours.

Oh op, I hope the support is focussed for DC and gives you and idea of what to focus on. I’d say balance challenging stuff she needs to work on, with stuff she is good at/enjoys so she has a chance to shine too.

First day went well as can be expected for DC4 (4). My that boy can talk, and he has the unique gift of savouring every moment and not succumbing to the evils of time pressure.

He is the squidgey child equivalent to someone who weaves slowly in front of you, on a path, oblivious to the world rushing about them, or that train you’re desperate to catch.

The older 3DC were on day two, finding their stride and independent. I can’t praise their high school enough. Apart from at one point my eldest started talking and I started calling back “what did you say love? What? WHAT DID YOU SAY?” Blush he was mightily Hmm apparently it caused much hilarity in class!
