Dp tested positive I tested negative but symptoms...

Dp tested positive on 1st of January after mild cold symptoms. I developed a sore throat, muscle aches, chest pain, headache and upset stomach in the early hours of Sunday morning. I took a test yesterday evening and today received a negative result. I was very confused by this but as my throat is so very sore I looked in the mirror and I have white patches on my tonsils. This could be tonsillitis but it doesn't explain the upset stomach or chest pains. What's the likelihood my infected tonsils caused Covid-19 not to be detected on my swab test? Should I retest or am I ok to no longer self isolate once dp finishes his isolation period?

I would strongly recommend that you isolate for 10 days from when your symptoms started but technically you dont have to.

This happened to me, I tested again and was positive. I know a few people with the same story. It’s easy to do the test wrong and there are false negatives. Test again.

Do you mind me asking when you re-tested?

Test again
Within 8 days of symptoms

This happened to friends. Both were out with another friend when restaurants were still open. She caught Covid from one of the other couple, who both tested +ve 2 days after they all met. DH was -ve but had symptoms. He tested again 3 days ,after and was +ve. He was ill for 3 weeks.

If for any reason you need to know for definite, test again. If you don’t need to know, isolate as though you were positive, i.e. 10 days from when your symptoms started.

Friend and daughter tested. Daughter was very ill, friend not much. Daughter was negative. Her daughter ended up in hospital with breathing difficulties, she also completely lost sense of smell. The hospital retested and it was still negative. They figured it was covid and isolated accordingly.
Another friend who has covid did seem to have tonsillitis too.

False negatives can happen.
If you didn't swab enough, or just in the right place, or caught the swab on your tongue when you removed- this could remove traces of the virus from the swab.

Sorry OP, I didn’t notice you’d asked me a question - my tests were three days apart. But I’m sure I must have been positive when the first test as I was already symptomatic. It had to have been a false negative.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 18:30

I would isolate for 10 days from your symptoms.

CodenameVillanelle · 06/01/2021 18:31

Assume you have it and isolate yourself

InvisibleMoonDancer · 07/01/2021 01:26

Cough started this afternoon so I have re tested. Does anyone know if I test positive when my results come back will my partner have to begin his isolation again? He is due to finish isolating tomorrow night.

No he should be fine as long as your symptoms started before the end of his isolation period.
