friend has told me that the vaccine he is having might be the "dodgy one"!!!! I told her that surely both vaccines have been approved.

Now she has me worrying.

Ignore her, unless she has hard evidence.

Overseasmom100 · 05/01/2021 17:09

She said 2nd one needs to be given 21 days after not 11 weeks

I'm sure your friend knows best.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 17:12

Is your friend a HCP?

helloxhristmas · 05/01/2021 17:12

Do you or your friend see / read the news?

Kendodd · 05/01/2021 17:15

Yes you should be worried.
You just can't believe actual scientists (what's they know!) you need to do all your own 'research' on YouTube.

YesMeLady · 05/01/2021 17:16

Is your friend on the vaccine scientific panel

PurpleDaisies · 05/01/2021 17:18

They’re both approved by the MHRA. Neither of them is dodgy.

LIZS · 05/01/2021 17:20

Prof Whitty cinfirns fine to have second dose up to 12 weeks as first gives a high level of protection.

MorrisZapp · 05/01/2021 17:21

There isn't a dodgy vaccine being given by the NHS.

Manzanilla55 · 05/01/2021 17:22

Dodgy knowledge of friend more like!

Parker231 · 05/01/2021 17:22

Has your friend provided her evidence?

Motorina · 05/01/2021 17:22

It's not dodgy. Your father is safe. The JCVI statement on lengthening the gap between first and second dose is at app.box.com/s/uwwn2dv4o2d0ena726gf4403f3p2acnu

junglepie · 05/01/2021 17:23

Well, whilst both the Oxford and the Pfizer one are likely to be safe given at a 12 week interval, with regard to how well they work for the Pfizer one there is only evidence of its efficacy when given at a 3 week interval. JCVI and MHRA have both come out and said that delaying the second dose of the Pfizer vaccination will not reduce its efficacy, however Pfizer themselves have actually issued a statement saying they don't approve this new dosing regime as it hasn't been tested.
I am very much in favour of vaccines, and also a clinician.
But if it was my parent, at this stage with a planned 12 week wait I would much rather they were given the Oxford vaccine not the Pfizer. (although first choice would be Pfizer with the 3 week gap)

AldiAisleofCrap · 05/01/2021 17:24

Approved by MHRA for 12 weeks apart however Pfizer do not agree with this. And 52% effectiveness is not a “high level” of protection.

It’s much better than 0% without the vaccine.

I know you have been told repeatedly on other threads that it's not 52% protection at the three week point. I know you've been shown links - including the one to the JCVI statement above - that make that clear. So why do you keep repeating this?
InterfectoremVulpes · 05/01/2021 18:35

Well the OP got her bite, so there's that 🤷‍♀️

@Motorina because it’s true, I looked into the information you shared and it’s in correct. There is no question at all that one dose of the Pfizer vaccine is only 52% effective. The MRHA will say what the government have told them to say.
I trust the actual manufacturers of the vaccine. You are very naive.

One final attempt...

Published efficacy between dose 1 and 2 of the Pfizer vaccine was 52.4% (95% CI 29.5-68.4%). Based on the timing of cases accrued in the phase 3 study, most the vaccine failures in the period between doses occurred shortly after vaccination, the period before any immune response is expected. Using data for those cases observed between day 15 and 21, efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 was estimated at 89% (95% CI 52-97%), suggesting that short term protection from dose 1 is very high from day 14 after vaccination.

Source: app.box.com/s/uwwn2dv4o2d0ena726gf4403f3p2acnu

The 52% efficacy is for the total three week period from the first dose to the second. This includes almost two weeks of no efficacy at all. The efficacy at the end of the three week period is around 90%.

This is clear from the peer reviewed article published by the manufacturers, which is at www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMoa2034577. It is also clear from the JCVI statement above.

Please stop sharing misinformation.

You’re wrong about the data.

52% is the average efficacy between the first dose and the second dose. The curve for the vaccine arm followed the curve for the placebo arm and then sharply levelled at about 14 days.
