I am more scared about losing my job than the virus

Does that make me selfish?

I am very worried about the very real prospect of unemployment in a very very difficult climate. Every time there is a lockdown or the cases go up, that's what I worry about. I worry about only receiving JSA, and how long I would be out of work.

I can't say this in real life of course - in real life all that matters is the virus. And people who say this are usually working secure, working from home jobs.

I feel the same. The state of the economy is much more of a worry to me

Porcupineintherough · 05/01/2021 13:52

No, not selfish at all. Lucky maybe? But worrying about losing your job isnt really very lucky, just maybe a little better than worrying about losing your life.

Chickenfingers · 05/01/2021 13:53

As someone whose just lost their job whilst on maternity, a remortgage due this year and high interest rates, childcare to pay for and I will need to take a much lower paid job I agree!

safariboot · 05/01/2021 13:55

YANBU.

Personally though, what I'm scared of is getting injured or sick with something else, and the hospitals being full.

viccat · 05/01/2021 13:58

I worry about both as the two things are not unrelated for me - I'm a freelancer and if I became too ill to work (i.e. long-covid) then I have no safety net at all, not even sick pay like employed people do. The company I mainly work for would just replace me.

monkeypuzzeltree · 05/01/2021 14:26

I totally agree. We are getting over COVID, I need another day or two off work as I just have zero energy I don't feel ok but work is going to be building up and I'll be expected to lead my team. Oh god and now we have to home school. I'm really worried how I'm going to get it all together.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/01/2021 14:28

Not at all, I feel the same. Losing my job is a greater threat to me than Covid if we look at statistics. It's a difficult time.

AlexaShutUp · 05/01/2021 14:33

I have already lost my job (main breadwinner) and DH's self-employed income has been virtually wiped out. My only complaint about the lockdown is that it should have been imposed earlier. It was utterly irresponsible to send primary school children in for just one day yesterday.

The economic situation is shit, and I'm worried about what will happen for us, but this is a public health issue, and imo, health comes first. I don't believe in throwing the old and vulnerable under the bus - we need to pull together as a society to get through this.

Seriouslymole · 05/01/2021 14:35

I worry about

a. my job going - I work in travel so it is only a matter of time
b. the kids getting ill with something other than Covid and not being able to access healthcare
c. the state of education (or lack thereof)
d. the state this country is getting it into with lockdown after lockdown which DON'T WORK
e. how angry I am all the time, at the fucking incompetence of the government who can't admit they have mismanaged this and should have handled it differently but rather than do something different, they do the same fucking thing time and again, shafting our economy, screwing over our children and wrecking our country.
f. climate change
g. the enormous mental health nightmare we are sleep walking into
h. the erosion of our civil liberties and the fact that so few people seem to notice this
i. the fact that my DC have not had their teeth checked for so long (well one has due to a tooth injury) and that DD really needs a check up - but oh, no, heaven forbid something so straightforward should happen.

So no OP, YANBU. Covid is at the very bottom of my excessively long worry list

Cherry889 · 05/01/2021 14:37

It is not selfish to think this.

I am currently unwell and have been for several months and waiting for tests/treatment. I worry more about this then covid.

IndieTara · 05/01/2021 14:38

I've had covid and been Made redundant already, can still eirrbb to about lots of other things though

notevenat20 · 05/01/2021 14:38

The effect of the total economic/educational meltdown that lockdowns and restrictions have caused will undoubtedly cause more harm in the medium term than covid.

oohmyback · 05/01/2021 15:09

Huge worry to us too. If it hasn't been for the mortgage break we would have lost our house. Then just as business is picking up, here we are again!

Timbucktime · 05/01/2021 15:11

Not selfish at all

DianaT1969 · 05/01/2021 15:19

Lots of people have lost their job.
People have lost their business.
Some have lost their lives.
Some are grieving beloved friends and family members.
Others are on ITU fighting for their lives.

But thanks for starting a thread about how you worry that you might lose your job. Your feelings are valid.

BlueBaubles12 · 05/01/2021 15:44

Not selfish at all, and completely reasonable.

applesandoranges221 · 05/01/2021 15:49

If you are, than I am too.

Far far more worried about the impact of these restrictions on a whole variety of things than I am about the virus.

PattyPan · 05/01/2021 16:00

It’s not surprising given your personal circumstances and perspective. I would feel the same if my 25 year old healthy former uni classmate hadn’t died of it during the first wave, and another of our classmates who’s a high-level athlete wasn’t suffering from long covid that has wiped her out. I’m more worried about getting long covid and never being able to work again than I am about losing an individual job if that makes sense.

MegaClutterSlut · 05/01/2021 16:03

Yanbu. Dh has worked solidly for 20 years, he was made redundant in October and no luck finding another job yet as they are few and far between in my area. I've had sod all luck either

shrill · 05/01/2021 16:38

I am worried about covid because it has a detrimental affect on every aspect and the longer it's figures rise the greater the affect on us all.

PoppiesinOctober · 05/01/2021 16:41

Not selfish at all. The job market and economy worry me much more, and DH isn't even in a position to lose his job. Scary times.

RaspberryCoulis · 05/01/2021 16:49

Yes the economy is my b my son concern too. That's not selfish, it's realistic.

Chickenfingers · 06/01/2021 17:03

@PoppiesinOctober

Not selfish at all. The job market and economy worry me much more, and DH isn't even in a position to lose his job. Scary times.
Neither was I 2 month ago, my team was even expanded! It's madness.
Elieza · 06/01/2021 17:22

I’d be worried about both.

Long covid is a bastard. A friend of a friend has it. Practically all her internal organs are gubbed, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver etc. She’s in hospital again. No previous health issues. Not old. Scary as hell.

Funkypolar · 06/01/2021 17:28

It’s going to be hard to “stay at home” when not having a job means you lose your home.
