Should Gavin Williamson resign?

So, one day back at school for the kids, and then they make an announcement to shut them down.

One school day of virus mingling...

Despite unions, some councils, and advisors urging primary schools not to reopen after the Christmas break.

Not to mention giving parents and schools virtually no notice to put in place their plans to start homeschooling.

Should he be asked to resign?

No. The decision wasn't made by him. It would have been made by a consensus of the cabinet after consultation with the scientists and taking into account the latest data on the spread of the mutated strain of the virus.

Biggest online union meeting of all time, 400,000 teachers giving up a Sunday morning to discuss their concerns, hundreds of schools staying closed despite government warnings, thousands of children/teachers support staff being put at risk for one measly day before another dramatic u turn with absolutely zero warning or time to organise childcare.....yet no sign of so much as a tweet from the education secretary! I think sacking him is the very least that should happen!

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 05/01/2021 12:25

No he should be sacked and someone semi competent in post. Preferably not someone who also has a history of constant errors and lack of subject matter basics. Empathy and non antagonistic personal qualities would be good soft skills to have as would make a big difference.

lovelemoncurd · 05/01/2021 12:27

Probably not the best time to start sackings. Let's just get through this next few weeks then sack the lot with an election!

WonderingFree · 05/01/2021 12:29

Yes - how can we trust him how?

Wakeupin2022 · 05/01/2021 12:31

Sorry, you trusted him?

He was sacked for breaking the Official Secrets Act if I remember correctly.

He should absolutely not be in the role he is. Although the same could be said for most of the government......

Igmum · 05/01/2021 12:55

Yes. So should Boris Johnson. In fact I'm struggling to think who should stay

This, with bells on

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia wholeheartedly agree. One way or another I think he should go...

Yes. He has mucked up too many times to remain in post. I am sure there are other education ministers who could step up to the Secretary of State role and do his job without too much further disruption. Someone who might be willing to engage with the profession to get the best outcome for children and young people. This is a hugely important job and he is just not up to it.

blalalala · 05/01/2021 15:01

@Igmum I would keep the Defence Secretary Ben Wallace who had served in the military. I might keep Michael Gove at a push as he does detail even though the rudest man in politics.

Some of the others I would want to see face criminal charges. I guess at least 200 of the Tory parliamentary party could do a better job than the current cabinet.

the80sweregreat · 05/01/2021 15:11

Yes, he should resign. For allowing schools to open yesterday for starters. For threatening Greenwich council before Christmas.
Who would take over though is another matter!
