Will garage be open?

My car went in for a MOT today and failed on a few bit, it's booked in to get the necessary work done tomorrow so is still at the garage. Does anyone know if mechanics are going to be open, or is it stuck there for the rest of lockdown?

I'm trying to remember if they were open in march, it feels like it should be as an essential buisness, but I remember them extending MOTs, which makes me think maybe they were closed. Plus it's not just a case of picking it up, if their not open to do the work I can't legally drive it anyway.

Surely it has to be an essential business? Many key workers need their cars.

That's what I was thinking, but I've just got a niggling doubt of 'why did they extended the mot's if they were allowed to open as usual?'. Hopefully I'm just overthinking.

I work in a main dealership and yes they are open. It's deemed essential so your ok

And they were open in March too. As dh worked through. He can mot too and even though they were extended people still got them done

Thank you for the reassurance. The though just occurred to me as set me on a mini panic, but didn't want to disturb the poor mechanic at 11pm to check. Glad it was a worry over nothing.

They're definitely open (although some my choose to open reduced days/hours and/or book in with as much notice as you can.

The extending of the MoTs in March wasn't through lack of facilities - it was to allow people who were shielding/frightened/unable to use public transport/broke(?!) to continue to use their cars for grace period if they weren't able to get it done.

I think it was also designed so that garages would have plenty of capacity for key workers and those depending on a reliable car to get their vehicles dealt with - MoT'd, serviced, repaired or whatever - whilst those without a pressing need for a car would seize on the chance for a 'free' six months before having to pay for another MoT and self-select to keep away during the period of high demand.

Sorry - several typos there.

I suppose the only thing might be if the garage usually collects and/or returns your car to your home/work as part of the service. Unless they have two employees from the same household, it will be very difficult for them to SD on the leg when they're both in one vehicle together.
