Please tell me im not the only one feeling like this! I absolutely adore my job but i am so scared about going to work tommorow i feel sick. I really feel like all nursery staff have been thrown under the bus. Im disgusted we never get a mention about the risks to us. I really need a hug 😢

I feel the same op

I am also CV due to pregnancy Sad

dchange · 04/01/2021 21:17

Totally understand your concern. However, this is more of a question for your employer. If you feel vulnerable then see if you can get furloughed. It's important to note the risk to children under 5 is close to o. The average age of a nursery worker is around 35. This group has a slightly higher risk than under 5's, but last research i saw stated less than 1% fatality. Now, if you are exposed to someone that is vulnerable then you should have been furloughed way before this lock down.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 04/01/2021 21:21

Furlough and private nurseries doesnt work out well

Chill08 · 04/01/2021 21:25

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE glad its not just me then

I don’t work for a nursery but my mum does and I want her out now. Really feel for you guys it doesn’t make any sense Flowers

dchange · 04/01/2021 21:32

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE in the current climate nothing is going to be convenient. The idea of parents working and home schooling their kids does not work hand in hand. Employers or rather should I say humans have to come together. If a nursery has an employee that is genuinely vulnerable then they need to work with him or her.

Again, I like refer to the stats.. if you are under 40 with no underlying conditions the risk of this virus is minimal. I will also assume this decision on early year setting is based on the science.

Im over 45, clinically vunerable( just missed sheilding) and work in a nursery, my risk assesment is essentially to work as normal then socially distance at other times!
I'm in a busy preschool and am absolutely terrified. I love my job, I've done it for over 20 years, I dont know what to do.

RandomMess · 04/01/2021 21:49

My DC are all grown now, I think the only reason they are open is because the staff aren't part of a union...

Pearsapiece · 04/01/2021 21:54

As parents, we appreciate the risks you take and your work which allows us to continue with our jobs too. It's a cycle of keeping the country going.
However, remember Transmission in nurseries is minimal. Many other people also have to go to work where they can't work from home. I'm afraid thats life.

Jobseeker19 · 04/01/2021 22:00

I'm disappointed that they didn't remain open for key workers only.

He should have also highlighted the tough job that we do.

We are still expected to do all the paperwork and planning, sleep training, potty training, settling new children in, peeling them from their parents when they are crying.

This is on top of the extra cleaning for the same shitty pay and under appreciation from people who think we are glorified baby sitters.

Indecisive12 · 04/01/2021 22:00

@RandomMess I thought the same.

RingPiece · 04/01/2021 22:01

I'm concerned for my friend who's also in her 40s, clinically vulnerable and to get to work, has to take a bus, train and then another bus. Her nursery have asked her CEV colleague to come to work also. I think the government need to make clear the rules regarding CV and CEV people who cannot WFH.

Jenasaurus · 04/01/2021 22:01

I am not nursery staff but my DD is and I know how hard it is for you all at the moment.

Remmy123 · 04/01/2021 22:06

@Jobseeker19 you are in the wrong job. I hop me my nursery do not talk about their job the way you have.

I suggest you seek another job.

Did you want to get paid while sat at home doing nothing?

dchange · 04/01/2021 22:06

@RandomMess valid point about unions. However, I also believe this is also linked to the fact they already operate in a bubble. For example, most nurseries need to work on a 3:1 ratio for under 3 and 4:1 for over 3. I personally primary schools should have stayed open as you can create and control the bubble. Secondary schools a little tricky as once the leave the school setting any idea of a bubble disappears.

@Chill08 sounds like the concern is more around falling ill and not taking care of your kids. This is every parents concern Covid or non Covid. Also, we need the stats as without it, the only option would have been total lockdown until vaccine. However I believe us and even our kids will be worse off.

I don't work for a nursery but don't believe I need to for my opinion.

These are unprecedented times! However we can shut down everything based on a small chance of getting ill.

dchange · 04/01/2021 22:09

*Can't

We appreciate key workers and this includes nursery workers 😁

SendHelp30 · 04/01/2021 22:14

I’m a finance manager in a nursery so in a separate office. There’s 4 of us in our bubble (office staff) and we don’t go into the children’s rooms.

Whoever said it doesn’t spread in nurseries isn’t speaking for them all. We had to close the whole nursery for 3 weeks in December when we had 4 bubbles burst due to 4 positive cases - all children. We had 5 individual bubble closures between September - December.
We have a one way system, full clean end of every shift, certain things not played with eg Sand, playdoh, dress up.. things that can’t be sterilised after use. And we’ve still been hit hard by it.

Badgerstmary · 04/01/2021 22:16

Op I feel exactly the same & am sending you a big 🤗. I am over 45 & have asthma. I did not feel safe at all at work today. We even had 4 new children.
DChange the ratios are actually 1:4 for 2 yr olds & 1:8 for 3 yr olds, however there could easily be 30 3yr olds in one room with 4 or 5 adults, or 17 2/3yr olds with 4 adults. None of these children are able to socially distance but are very good at spreading germs, & we are not able to wear PPE. What other workplaces do unprotected people have others climbing all over them?
It is not just me that I am worried about, it is that the children may catch it & spread it to others & into the community. Our hospitals are already full. 😢 😟

Freddiefox · 04/01/2021 22:18

I’m
So sorry we are being treated like this, by parents and the government. No one cares about you, you have to make your own choices.

Currently sitting here deciding whether to go in out resign, I’m not paid danger money.

Freddiefox · 04/01/2021 22:19

If you don’t feel your work place is safe, don’t go in.

SendHelp30 · 04/01/2021 22:19

@Freddiefox we had 2 practitioners hand in their notice today and they won’t be working their notice period. I expect more will follow. If we get any more we will have to close anyway as we won’t have enough staff for the ratios. I don’t think BJ considered this at all.

NiceTwin · 04/01/2021 22:22

My dd works in a nursery, she can't wait to be back.
She is youthful though and they have yet to have any cases. It may have been different had they suffered an outbreak.

Pebbledashery · 04/01/2021 22:23

Nothing much useful to say but just wanted to say thank you for continuing to work 😢. Appreciate you're being put at risk and that's horrible. Just pray you're all safe xx

londonmummy1234 · 04/01/2021 22:23

Thank you nursery staff 🌟
You guys are amazing and I agree you should be paid way more, it's a disgrace.
