Why such hatred towards people on furlough?

I am on maternity. I was put on Furlogh in march, my place of work reopened in July. I was too far pregnant and stayed on furlough until my maternity started.
I fell pregnant before the pandemic. We have a 4 month old daughter. My husband is a chef. He went back to work in July and worked until November baring 2 weeks of paternity leave. Furloghed in November and then due to tiers has not gone back. He gets 80 percent of his wage. Thats 201 pound a week. I get statutory maternity pay. 151 pound a week. We have a mortgage property and bills to pay.

The hatred towards people on furlough insisting we have a higher tax rate when we go back, saying we are lazy and not hard working. My husband has applied for 60 jobs this past week alone. Unfortunately with most being zero hours he's reluctant to apply in case he ends up with less then his furlough pay. I've applied to go back to work. I too work in hospitality, I would be on part furlough so wouldn't be any better off plus they have no hours for me. We are desperate to work.
Once furlough ends a higher tax rate for 2 adults on minimum wage would cripple us financially.

Why the hatred? Were not rich, we are struggling. Weve missed meals so we can afford formula and pay our mortgage.
I'm just fed up of the assumptions people make about us

It is the British disease. Always comparing themselves to others and getting envious of anyone who has any perceived advantage, whether real or imagined.

It blights lives.

Mixingitall · 04/01/2021 20:30

I am sorry for your situation.

I don’t believe there is hatred, you cannot change the fact you work for a company that has needed to furlough staff.

I don’t know anyone who has spoken negatively about anyone on furlough or the furlough scheme,

vanillandhoney · 04/01/2021 20:31

I don't think it's hatred, but I do think a lot of people are resentful as they have no help at all available to them.

£350 is much more than what many families are receiving.

blvdbrokendreams · 04/01/2021 20:33

@vanillandhoney I understand that we are fortunate to receive it. Our outgoings haven't changed. We budgeted for my maternity pay on my husbands full time pay.

There are multiple negative threads on here about those on Furlough.

To be fair furlough seems good in that you gave the time off and I think that’s the part others see not the trying to balance the books on less money m. I have worked right through this at home and my friend is envious of me as she is a carer and has to go out.

Of course - being on furlough doesn't mean you're not struggling.

But I do think if you've received no support since March and have been unable to work, it can be quite difficult to hear people complain about receiving 80% of their income while they sit at home.

I don't think it's intended to be personal. It's the government's fault for not helping everyone equally!

Babyroobs · 04/01/2021 20:46

My son's friend who is 21 has been furloughed from his chef's job at 80% of 2k a month for most of last year.

Porgy657 · 04/01/2021 20:48

I think a lot of it is the perception/jealousy that you’re being paid but not having to work...personally I would hate it - would be different if we could actually do stuff (but then it wouldn’t be happening!)
Sorry you’re struggling and try not to take peoples opinions too personally, it reflects more on them than you!

viccat · 04/01/2021 20:49

Hatred seems too strong of a word but is it not understandable that at least some people will feel envious that others have basically had nearly a whole year of paid holiday now... In the meantime many self-employed have had zero support, and others who are lucky to be employed and able to work throughout have been working on low incomes and put themselves at risk unable to stay at home (supermarket staff, bus drivers, delivery people and many, many more).

Many people on furlough have also been able to get other work alongside which means getting 80% government support on top of another income.

Some kind of an universal basic income would have been a fairer system.

Oblomov20 · 04/01/2021 20:51

80% is better than nothing. Pension is being paid.
Soon, Some will have been off for a year.

Commonwasher · 04/01/2021 20:53

It’s resentment I expect. Seen as time off, even though it isn’t.

And because others are either very much worse off than you for time, and/or money.

I doubt it’s personal but I can see how it grates.

bluessinger · 04/01/2021 21:10

yip multiple negative threads and already someone has called it a holiday

SonjaMorgan · 04/01/2021 21:29

Jealousy. As someone who has fallen through the gaps it can be hard to hear some of the boasting from family and friends. The lockdowns haven't hit everyone equally and inequality always causes resentment.

Mixingitall · 04/01/2021 22:01

@Friendsoneuptown

There may be many negative threads but I don’t believe people view those opinions in real life.

I know a few people who are furloughed and they would all rather be working.

KitKatastrophe · 04/01/2021 22:05

I've not seen this hatred in real life, or even outside of mumsnet. Anyone with half a brain realised that people have not chosen to be furloughed.

Dee1975 · 04/01/2021 22:17

I’m not aware of any hatred and sorry you have had some. I’ve not been on furlough, but have had to put people on furlough and have regular update chats with them. I know and understand the worry those on furlough have.
Good luck with the job hunting. Ignore the haters.

User158340 · 05/01/2021 08:08

The furloughed have become the new 'benefit scroungers' and perhaps even more pronounced because they have a higher income from the taxpayer.

There always has to be someone and something to shame and scorn in this country.

username9768 · 05/01/2021 08:18

I agree OP for many that are furloughed they are worried sick they won't have a job soon. I have been on maternity but many of my colleagues have been furloughed. My DH was made redundant (he wasn't even on furlough so was a it unexpected). I am obviously worried about my job. This experience has humbled me I would love job security right now.

GhostPepperTears · 05/01/2021 08:25

It's an obsession with the idea that someone else must have it easier or harder than you - and that this ranking must be confirmed and expressed.

Rather than the truth, which is that all our lives have multiple complex elements that help or hinder them and whether or not it's been easy or hard for us can rarely be boiled down to a single aspect like whether ot not you receive furlough pay.

e.g. Does someone at home on furlough with no family to keep them company, a fear of losing the job altogether and a degrading mental health problem have it easier than someone on nothing, seeing the business they worked hard to start slowly slip away, getting into debt to scrape by but with the love and support of a partner and stable mental health?

I think the answer is that no one can know. Both people are likely to find the situation very tough - because the current situation IS very tough in many ways, for many people.
