What do you all think of these being kept open during a lockdown?

OP posts:
BamboozledandBefuddled · 04/01/2021 19:08

They should be.

Dnadoon · 04/01/2021 19:09

Selfishly I need them to keep working, I have breeze blocks and roof tiles piled up high on scaffolding outside my kitchen window Confused

Katjolo · 04/01/2021 19:10

Remain open.

PurpleHoodie · 04/01/2021 19:10

Construction/Engineering/Maintenance etc should keep going and be kept open.

AnyFucker · 04/01/2021 19:11

What's your problem ?

PurpleHoodie · 04/01/2021 19:11

It's a broad spectrum anyhow.

What do you mean in particular?

OhHiya · 04/01/2021 19:12

Who said I had a problem? I asked for opinions.

This must be about the third thread on this today. Why do you care?

IndecentFeminist · 04/01/2021 19:13

Of course they need to. Building sites can't just grind to a halt.

Yes, I probably should’ve specified but I was too lazy to write a bigger post 😬

I don’t mean the smaller jobs, I’m talking about the large construction sites with over 100 people working on them. Many of the jobs that need doing cannot be done while socially distancing.

Sorry! I don’t spend a lot of time on here, I didn’t see the other threads. Please report and ask MN to remove if you feel it’s one too many.

I work in construction for major projects and we are operating to SOP V6 which is one way systems on site, 2m distance, A & B teams, family working in bubbles, masks etc etc. We’ve been operating effectively since March + 2 weeks and not one of our sites have been closed. (Some with up to 500 workers - very large site should be around 1500 in normal operation) HSE have generally been very cooperative and have praised the sector on how we’ve managed to operate safely.

There aren’t any rumours that we will close yet and I think it will be very unlikely.

AnyFucker · 04/01/2021 19:16

Lots of people today picking up on buidling/construction industry

Unlrss you are directly involved let the industry take care of itself

It does affect me.

I apologise, I didn’t realise talk of building sites was such a bone of contention, I genuinely hadn’t seen this mentioned on here.
I’ve just scrolled through the topic and came across another thread about it.

They should be kept open, especially if working outdoors, the majority of building companies will be small-medium family run ltds. Like ours, the vast majority of people who run these have had no financial support whatsoever since March. If the government want us to close they have to offer us the same income deal as PAYE/self employed. It’s not a job that can be done from home. If we can’t work we’ll lose our business that we spent 15 years building up, which is our sole family income, we’ll lose our house.

PurpleHoodie · 04/01/2021 19:20

Oh. Yes. Well I'm well placed (professionally speaking) to answer your specific question then.

They should remain open and working.

The guys (it is mainly guys - with the odd gal who is always in charge I-like-it) book on and wear almost full body PPE. Boiler suits/plastic over body boiler suits/higher grade face masks/special boots/gloves/hi vis/eye glasses/goggles etc

The work needs doing. It can be done safely.

I echo this. There has been a LOT done in our sector to operate safely and keep people earning and not going under.

I am a girl and I lead the projects entirely. I’m working on diversity improvements 😁

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/01/2021 19:26

Well, DH works on sites with 2 or 3 people working on them. But you wouldn't want him to stop! If he did then your mobile phones wouldn't work, your motorway and railway signage and comms wouldn't work.

That's why he has worked throughout, even when we were in tier 2 and he was sent to IoM and Wales etc etc. That's why some hotels stay open, other shops you may not consider as being "essential" too - your mobile key workers might need to buy all sorts of stuff as they work away from hime, driving round the country for a couple of weeks at a time! It's awful. Boring, lonely and grubby, locked up in a hotel room every hour you are not on site!

PurpleHoodie · 04/01/2021 19:26

I sometimes have the odd guy trying to let him and his team flout safety regulations (and really expecting me to roll over because I am but a mere woman in charge at that time) but I quite literally flutter my eyelashes back and tell them "Nooo".

Much huffing and puffing ensues. But they do as they're told.

Wakeupin2022 · 04/01/2021 19:26

They closed in Scotland last time.

Not this time.

Hope it is same in England. They were open last time & we do need to keep as much going as possible.

MadeForThis · 04/01/2021 19:27

I'm hoping they stay open.

taupeskies · 04/01/2021 19:27

Hi OP
My DP works on building sites and the one he's on in particular has responded really well to COVID and made us Covid secure. He's classed as clinically vulnerable (but as most people who are self employed) not working isn't an option financially. He's continued working on his own and safely throughout most of the pandemic thankfully.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 04/01/2021 19:31

We are surveyors and still going to work
Our job is where the site is so can't work from home

Coasterfan · 04/01/2021 19:32

DH is currently working on a project building social housing, I am amazed he’s not on the critical worker list to be honest, it’s an essential and very much needed service. The site he’s working on only closed for a few weeks in March and I think that was so they could get covid secure measures in place. I can’t see him being furloughed this time.

PurpleHoodie · 04/01/2021 19:32
