To propose that vets and dentists should vaccinate people right now?

I saw this on Twitter, a vet saying he'd be willing to administer the Covid vaccine and someone else said why not dentist too? May be a bit leftfield, but with cases rising at an alarming rate, why not? I'm sure with a bit of training, these professions could be ideal to help accelerate the vaccination process?

It was mentioned on bbc that dentists & pharmacists will be among the vaccinators

I don't understand what purpose the radicalisation training serves? I work in a university (a sector which the government considers a prime site for radicalisation) and have never been required to do this training.

It’s statutory training in the NHS. Quite a lot of things have been added recently, probably because somebody thought it was a good idea. If you already work for the NHS it should just be on your yearly training. An afternoon training on various things isn’t a lot over the year but if you’re a new starter it’s a delay which isn’t strictly necessary if you’re just there to provide extra capacity for vaccinations!

The radicalisation is within safeguarding training I think as it can be a safeguarding issue

@Theredjellybean

I am a gp... Fully trained up, in good standing, qualified GP. SO far I have had to do 17 training modules... Not allowed to submit my in date training certificates, had to replicate everything. And now having to take afternoon of leave to do an online interactive training session. Which is a nurse reading out phe slides which are replication of the training modules I have already completed. Its is beyond patronising... I have had to listen to her telling me that "covid is a virus, this is different to a bacteria" And "covid is a serious illness, some people have died" I kid you not I have been working in a covid service since march.
I'm in primary care though not a GP, I have had to do all that too and the online session nearly finished me off! The joy was only compounded by the emails from the CCG warning us that "Over 80s may not be as mobile as younger people" and advising us to ensure chairs were available in case needed and allow more time for getting them in and out

I suspect one of the reasons this is not suitable for self administration is that it has to go into the deltoid, so right at the top of the outer arm. It's a bit difficult to reach and get at the right angle. I suspect most self administered injections are subcutaneous rather than intramuscular (although I don't know that for sure)

Just wanted to say, thank you to everyone who's contributed to this thread. I have no experience in anything medical, so had no idea that vets etc had already been approached. I have learnt so much from this thread and I wanted to say I am so so very grateful to those professionals who have the ability to administer this vaccine to us and have come forward. The red tape you have to face is so frustrating, but I do hope that it is going to be lessened now, and that we can vaccinate as many pp as possible in the next few months so that we can all get our lives back which is what we all want. X

“I find it surprising that my retired nurse aunt has offered and not been replied to yet. Surely this is exactly the sort of person they need?”

A former nurse was speaking on You and Yours today. She’s volunteered: had to fill out an 18 page application, complete 8 online training courses, taking about 10 hours, be assessed on them then provide references.
Several days later, she’s still not heard 🤯

The numbers of people applying are absolutely enormous and they all have to go through normal recruitment as far as I can see, that has to be done by nhs staff, there aren’t new staff employed to sort through it. Yes on the one hand it seems ridiculous but then on the other you do need to be quite careful as nobody wants another Harold shipman/ Beverley Allitt.
