Fines

Me and my husband do not want to send our daughter (6) into school next week. Her school are staying open atm

My mum is vulnerable And 74 and having eye surgery Tuesday so will be needing even more looking after. If my daughter goes back to school it puts my mum at higher risk of catching Covid.

I feel like I’m being backed into a corner either send my daughter to school or care for my mum.

Do you think schools will issue fines if we decide to keep her home?

Yup

I’ve been in the same boat all along - I’m CEV, so it’s direct household contact with school-going DC for me

Yes you can be fined

So you either keep your DC at home and risk the fine, or send them in and risk the consequences.

There are hundreds of thousands of us in these circumstances

As your DC’s contact with the CV grandparent is indirect, do have a think about whether you can build in enough distancing and manage as he risk that way. But unless you and your entire household is living close to isolation, you are likely to pose some level of risk to your DMum

One solution might be for you to move in with your DMum for a while? You reduce the risk by (safely) becoming her household, not moving between two

If it was normal times and your mum was going through chemo and you told the school you needed to take DC off for those reasons and asked for educational material to be provided you would have every right to do so without being fined. (As far as I know, although there could be someone who had a similar situation in the past who would prove me wrong). So write in and explain to them the situation and that you can't keep your DM shielded.
