What does your 10 day isolation store cupboard /meal plan look like

InTheLongGrass · 03/01/2021 19:42

Very late to the party here.
We have generally decently stocked cupboards, and a small freezer.
A 10 day isolation, starting just before I did a supermarket shop was decidedly random and not particularly balanced!

So, who has actually thought this through, and has a 10 day cupboard meal plan (3 meals a day, 2 adults, 2 kids who eat pretty adult meals) they would be prepared to share? Better still if they have the shopping list!!

I've been making sure I have a weekly delivery booked since about August, when it all started to get easier again.

SilenceOfThePrams · 03/01/2021 22:12

I’ve always got at least a fortnight’s stuff in the freezer. Might be eating a little odd combinations by the end of it but we’d be eating.

Have a vast freezer, but it always has in it peas, mixed veg, casserole veg, sweetcorn and spinach. Fish fillets, chicken pieces, mince, pork chops, lamb chops, burgers, nuggets sausages and fish fingers. Oven chips and frozen roasties. Whatever meals I’ve cooked and frozen so often a lasagne, shepherds pie, fish pie, pasta bake. Milk and spare bread. bananas, berries, ice cream.

In the pantry, always, dried milk and uht milk. Pasta of various shapes, rice - basmati, risotto and pudding - tinned soup, tomatoes, beans. Jars of pasta sauce, curry sauce, barbecue sauce and spare ketchup. Flour, sugar, cocoa, always at least a months supply of tea and coffee.

Then in the fridge we’ve always back up butter, cheese, yoghurts and many many eggs. Salad veg and fresh veg and an almost infinite variety of spreads and jams and other bits.

And then things like spare loo rolls, kitchen roll, dishwasher and laundry tablets, bleach.

And a jug in a cupboard with at least £30 in in cash so I can pay anyone who does a top up shop for us

Nothing specifically covid related just been stuck before suddenly when I’ve been ill so I always keep us well stocked.

Was very useful back in March when we suddenly had to shield and were relying on friends to shop for us until we could get a delivery slot.

I have hello fresh free boxes if anyone is in need due to isolating pm me

Hollyhobbi · 03/01/2021 22:18

Why are ye told to only isolate for 10 days in the UK? The incubation period is up to 14 days and that's what most other countries tell people to isolate for after contact with a confirmed case. No wonder its rampant there.

PickAChew · 03/01/2021 22:24

It's only recently been reduced. The likelihood of undetected infection becomes much smaller after 10 days and people are more likely to be compliant, apparently, if isolation is shorter.

DreamingofaShiteChristmas · 03/01/2021 22:27

We grew a lot of potatoes this year planted in the March/ April supermarket panic buying and I went blackberrying at the end of the summer and made a ton of jam.

I keep telling the family that in the event of Brexit shortages/ lockdown/ isolation we can live for some while on jacket potatoes with jam.....nobody seems keen for some reason!

MintyCedric · 03/01/2021 22:32

I've had a delivery today and have weekly deliveries booked up to 30th Jan.

If we get stuck I have a second freezer which has got about a dozen various homemade 'ready meals' in it, along with frozen pastry, vegetables, jacket and roast potatoes, chips, grated cheese, a small gammon joint, small minced beef, chorizo and bacon.

In the garage I have a shelf unit with household and pet supplies, umpteen tins of soup, beans, spaghetti, tinned steak in gravy, chicken in white sauce, ham, corned beef, and two large plastic containers of dried goods...biscuits, cereal, bread mix, rice and pasta.

I've used a few bits recently but at last check if we went into a really hard-core lockdown or there were supply issues I could probably manage without shopping for the best part of a month at a push, 3 weeks comfortably.

MintyCedric · 03/01/2021 22:33

Also have various drinks, UHT milk and juice

finkking · 03/01/2021 22:35

That's what deliveroo is for I can get everything from Waitrose to Five Guys so I won't go hungry

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 03/01/2021 22:36

We had covid and had zero appetite apart from juice and a slice of toast or a croissant. Then progressed to takeaways of random stuff we fancied.
The smell of food cooking made us nauseous and this is the first Christmas we have lost weight.

noturkeythankyou · 03/01/2021 22:40

We had sudden isolation, neighbours helped with things like bread and fruit then we used amazon in between plus had an ocado slot booked 1 week in.

SillyOldMummy · 03/01/2021 22:43

I've stocked up on the assumption someone may actually be unwell, so in addition to a good supply of store cupboard items, I've got Cup-A-Soups, tinned soup, Maggi noodles, Katsu curry pot rice, lots of tinned fruit, Vitamin pills, concentrated squash and fruit teas, as well as paracetomol and calpol and plenty of tissues.

Not enough for two full weeks, but enough to ensure we had time to get a family member or neighbour to help us buy essentials.

Northernsoullover · 03/01/2021 22:46

Mine looks like JustEat! I did try having 10 days worth of food in but I ended up wasting a lot. I have enough staples that I would only need a few items delivered in.

trevthecat · 03/01/2021 22:47

We have enough in the house. We have frozen meat and veg, tinned veg, pasta, rice, baking stuff. We would struggle for potatoes and fruit. But I think apart from that we would be fine. Some good threads over on preppers

CrunchyCarrot · 03/01/2021 23:13

I prep generally, for two of us.

5 kg flour
5 kg rice
2 kg pasta
Various crackers
Couscous
Noodles
Red/brown/puy lentils

20 tins of tomatoes
20 tins assorted fruits
Tinned sardines/mackerel/tuna
Various tinned veggies
24 x tinned veggie curry
24 x tinned soup

20 packets instant soup

Freezer: chicken breasts/thighs, white fish, pork loin, sausages, bacon, cheese, milk, butter, fruit (picked from our raspberries/blueberries), stir fry vegetables, oven chips, peas.

Olives, pickles
Coffee, tea
Baking stuff (baking powder, yeast, bicarb, sugar, etc)
Curry paste
Mustard
Pepperami
Instant gravy, curry sauce
Herbs and spices
Salt and pepper
Longlife juice
Dried milk
Bottled water

Also things like batteries, kitchen roll, loo roll (!), al foil and cling film.
Medicines and first aid stuff.

MrsMiaWallis · 03/01/2021 23:17

There are five of us, to have an extra 150 meals "just in case" would be impossible. I could do 3 days, then neighbours would drop food off.

Gingerkittykat · 03/01/2021 23:59

This thread has made me think about what I need to stock up on, I was good at the beginning of lockdown but have let it slip now.

I would buy another 40 sachets of cat food to keep spare and cat litter.

I already have loads of pasta and rice, noodles, coffee and evaporated milk. I've got lentils, pasta sauces, a block of tofu, a pack of part baked rolls, tuna, sweetcorn, mayo and not much else.

My freezer is empty since I'm getting a new one delivered in a few days. I plan to fill it with things like Mcains micro jacket potatoes, an extra block of butter and cheese and some ready meals in case I don't feel well and don't want to cook. I'm also going to go to my local butchers who do amazing soups for £1 for 400ml for the freezer. I'm also going to get some digestives and crackers

I'm fine for household goods and toiletries for at least a couple of weeks.

The local corner shop does deliver but it is expensive and any fresh food is terrible quality, I could buy bread and milk there though.

My main worry would be my medication, I take 11 different meds a day and they are dispensed in a weekly dosette box and they refuse to give me more than one box at a time. I've heard that there is official support out there for people self isolating and I could make an appeal on the FB coronavirus support group if I was desperate.

Wow, you're brave. I was wary of suggesting people keep a few extra things in the cupboard and freezer, lest I get jumped on by the 'check your privilege, not everyone has the money for £50 of extra tins and a perfectly standard kitchen appliance' crew but relying on Deliveroo as your back up plan really is another level of advantage in terms of availablity and affordability.
TheAlphaandtheOmega · 04/01/2021 06:28

We don't have Deliveroo where we live and it is just a normal town, not remote or anything. We also don't have Amazon fresh.

notevenat20 · 04/01/2021 06:28

Isn’t it very expensive to get Deliveroo food deliveries?

userxx · 04/01/2021 06:43

@notevenat20

Isn’t it very expensive to get Deliveroo food deliveries?

I used it a while ago for an Aldi shop as I was without transport, as I was a new customer I got 2 weeks free delivery and honestly it was brilliant, my shopping was delivered within 40 minutes. I'd definitely use again if needed.

FindHungrySamurai · 04/01/2021 06:50

Deliveroo etc mount up long term and it would cost you a fair amount for every meal for a full two weeks if for some reason you found yourself with nothing , but if you’re using them for the first time there are a lot of cut price introductory delivery deals out there and they will deliver from supermarkets not just restaurants.

Parbor · 04/01/2021 06:54

I keep well stocked cupboards but there are six of us and when I couldn’t get shopping delivered for ages in the first lockdown I realised that my stores weren’t as big as I thought! A meal for six comprised of tins uses a lot of tins Grin. I don’t like to rely too much on the freezer since having a full freezer break down on me so try to keep more dried and tinned food.
finkking · 04/01/2021 06:57

I was being a little bit tongue in cheek as I would also use the stuff at the back of the cupboards/bottom of the freezer.

However I would certainly rely on Deliveroo/uber eats & Sainsbury's also have the chop chop app. I'm fortunate that 2 weeks would have little financial impact.
We used it a lot over the last yr, as pp said it depends what you buy, Aldi will be better value than Wagamama.
Is it the most cheaper option? No however we don't have days out/meals out anymore, holidays cancelled or decided not to go. it's one of the few treats left.

finkking · 04/01/2021 06:58

We already use milk & more & a toilet paper subscription service.
