Should I lie to school or tell the truth?

I'm keeping my DC's off this week, I'm disabled and DD has immune system issues from being very ill last year. In September I tried to ask for flexibility over attendance but the head (though nice about it) said that as I wasn't shielded she couldn't do anything. So they went in and we ran the gauntlet until Christmas.
This now feels too risky. I feel incredibly uncomfortable sending them and I imagine schools will close soon anyway.
Do I lie/self isolate to buy a week and see if they close? Or do I try telling them the truth and hope they don't fine me/prosecute me? I was going to lie but for some reason I feel really stressed and guilty about it. WWYD?

Send them into school

SophieB100 · 03/01/2021 19:16

Schools will close by the end of the week OP.
I'd just report them both as unwell.
Keep it simple.

RememberSelfCompassion · 03/01/2021 19:18

We've sent an email being honest saying we're keeping off for 2 weeks.

Will see what happens

GoldenLabbie · 03/01/2021 19:18

@FecktheBoss

Send them into school
Yes, and let them potentially catch Covid. What a stupid comment.
covetingthepreciousthings · 03/01/2021 19:18

I'd just tell the truth. We aren't sending DC's this week and just going to say we don't want to risk it as we think schools will be closed by the end of the week anyway.

CuppaZa · 03/01/2021 19:20

Just tell them your reasons and keep them off

MadeForThis · 03/01/2021 19:21

Say someone in the house has a cough and you are isolating for 10 days.

Beebityboo · 03/01/2021 19:21

I'd prefer to be honest, but I know she won't be supportive about it.

Be truthful and don’t send in

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 03/01/2021 19:22

Ds 6 has asthma. Given our other dc are off another 2 weeks I can't see any positives to sending him tomorrow..
Just read school testing plans. From what I can grasp (?!) it seems disorganised.. Not sure how my 11 yo is going to manage to test himself -

Cantaloupeisland · 03/01/2021 19:22

Attendance officer here. I won't be asking any further questions of parents who say their dc need to isolate due to symptoms/contact with positive case. This gets recorded in a way that doesn't affect attendance

AppleKatie · 03/01/2021 19:23

Have a cough/stomach bug/headache for a few days see how the land lies.

RubyViolet · 03/01/2021 19:25

You won’t be the only family deciding to keep the kids home this week. I think these are exceptional circumstances. Don’t beat yourself up. You’ve made a decision, you’re reducing the pressure on your family.

SummerHouse · 03/01/2021 19:28

I wouldn't worry about her support. I would tell the truth. In all probability it will just go down as unauthorised but so what? You have your reasons and they are more than good enough. I wouldn't give it a moment's more headspace. You don't need to lie about doing what you think is right.

HyperHippo · 03/01/2021 19:47

Just be honest. I think times have changed since Sept. Say you feel your family need to isolate due to the health needs and don't go into too much detail. Less is more with these things. Schools are so busy working out what to do that I doubt too much thought will go into a reply.

PrincessNutNuts · 03/01/2021 20:41

The government has put parents and schools in a dreadful position. Parents have to lie, and schools have to accept the lie.

Tier 5/Lockdown is coming. School closures are coming. Possibly in days.

The school would probably prefer that the absence is authorised, and kids get ill all the time.

They've got a cough, you're wondering if you should get tested? No headteacher is going to advise you to send DC with a cough in at this point in the pandemic.
