What kind of dress size would BMI 40 be?

on a 5'4" woman?

I've just read on another thread that people with a BMI of 40 should be shielding in Tier 4 areas but don't want to derail it as it has nothing to do with weight or shielding.

My mum is hugely overweight but she's only 66 so says she's fine to go shopping twice a week and it's 'something to do'. This scares me and I really want her to be more careful. I wonder if knowing she should really be shielding would do it.

She's a size 24 and 5'4". Would that be over 40 in BMI? I know it's hard to know from a dress size but I have no idea of her weight.

If it is over 40, would you say something? She doesn't follow minute details of covid news, doesn't use the internet and her doctor probably doesn't know her weight so I don't know that she'll find out if I don't say. But it's quite an awkward coversation - 'hi, Mum, you should be shielding because your BMI is so high'?!

Elieza No, not local - 4 hours away unfortunately. But she lives in sheltered housing and has a friend she is bubbles with there. So she's doing ok.

Everyone in their 60s is at some risk compared with younger people and adding in a high BMI your DM is definitely vulnerable although she would not need to shield.

This calculator is useful to show someone's covid risk. Being a woman is protective.

I'm pretty sure people who are obese are not supposed to be shielding in T4 just for that. Double check on NHS website but I really don't think so

People with a BMI of 40 or above are absolutely on the shielding list for tier 4. It's on the Gov.uk site.[/quote]
I'm not. Despite other diagnoses making me CV.

God why do people have to talk rubbish with such total authority - people who have BMI > 40 do not have to shield in Tier 4. They are classed as clinically vulnerable and advised to take extra care - the same advice that’s always been for high BMI.

People need to get their facts right before talking rubbish and scaring people.

No, I’ve just checked, it’s only the extremely clinically vulnerable (ECV) that need to shield. High BMI is only classed as Clinically vulnerable (CV) / moderate risk - so you should take extra care. The two links below:

ECV list:

CV list, which includes those with high BMI:

Quite.

@DumplingsAndStew

I just checked - links in previous post.

BMI of 40+ is not on the shield list in Tier 4.

My mum is older and not overweight but I bought her some vitamin D tablets. I suggest you do the same for your mum as that will give her a better chance in the worst case she gets covid. I can see why she would want to go shopping a couple of times a week as it would be depressing to stay at home all the time.

The weight issue is tricky to bring up. I think people have to worry about it themselves to take action.
