Notified at 5pm tonight that primary school not opening tomorrow

Just received notification from school. INSET tomorrow and then home learning Tues and Wednesday. Keyworker and vulnerable children only. No hint of what happens Thursday onwards.

The late notice aside...it does make me wonder if they know something about what the govt is planning to say on Wednesday...

For context, I live in Surrey, Tier 4, but my kids primary had no cases from September.

I 100% promise they do NOT know anything about what the government will or won’t do.

Littlemiss74 · 03/01/2021 17:40

@Rinoachicken really...I’m in Surrey too. Not heard anything but I’m keeping mine at home for this week.

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 03/01/2021 17:40

Surely the INSET was pre planned? Most schools are having INSET tomorrow. Cases in the community have probably meant that it is not deemed safe at the moment.

slothpaw · 03/01/2021 17:41

No schools know anything. It sounds like yours is still working out how many staff they'll have and therefore can't confirm if they can open as normal. There have been union and local authority meetings today and more to come tomorrow.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 03/01/2021 17:42

I don’t think the government knows what the government is planning to say on Wednesday

2020out · 03/01/2021 17:42

They won't know anything.

It's because the staff will have refused to work onsite (section 44 health and safety) and the headteacher will therefore have been forced to close the school.

It's a rubbish situation. I feel so bad for people finding out now that they'll have to sort childcare for tomorrow.

Bickertown · 03/01/2021 17:42

School have ABSOLUTELY no idea what the government is going to say. Very very few people do.
Late notice is probably because head has been waiting until this evening for staff to send the section 44 letter

Panickingpavlova · 03/01/2021 17:42

They have probably received some section 44 and decided to make the move to on line.

unmarkedbythat · 03/01/2021 17:43

We're in Manchester. Inset tomorrow and I 99% expect that at some point during tomorrow they will inform us that they aren't opening Tuesday. The staff body were not happy about returning in September and I think there is quite a lot of support among parents for further closures. There is also quite a lot of opposition to that, so whatever happens there will be some very interesting discussions on Facebook etc.

So true.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/01/2021 17:43

It's likely they are only adding the Tuesday on so that they have time to establish which of their staff are putting in their Section 44 letter. Only once they know this will they know more.

Rinoachicken · 03/01/2021 17:43

No INSET planned. We were messaged on Friday confirming school would be open for all on 4th as planned.

It’s part of a larger academy trust, and the decision is trust wide apparently.

We absolutely do not know anything ahead of when Boris makes an announcement. Most school leaders have spent the weekend meeting with their staff/ LA / Governors/ Trust to make a decision hence why emails are coming out now that decisions have been ratified.

quarentini · 03/01/2021 17:45

Same at a local primary in my area.
Greater Manchester Tier 4.
Should of opened tomorrow and will now make a decision on Wednesday.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/01/2021 17:45

DS's school is part of an academy trust and another school in the trust announced about an hour ago they aren't opening tomorrow. Haven't heard from DS's school yet but I'm expecting the same as they're part of the same trust.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/01/2021 17:47

Our school have said they will know more tomorrow when they speak to all staff at the training day.

CoveHid · 03/01/2021 17:47

We had an email from school yesterday saying we had to send our children in unless they had a letter from a medical professional that they needed to be shielded or had a family member that had the same. Also in Surrey, and the school said it had used the template sent by Surrey county council.

I understand they’re constrained but didn’t think being so blunt was necessary. As it is, we won’t be sending DC.

This is the most accurate post I've ever seen on Mumsnet. 🤣

OP surely you knew any announcement would be last minute from the school. Personally I'm amazed anyone wasn't already making plans with the mindset that schools wouldn't be returning.

helloxhristmas · 03/01/2021 17:48

Dh has been in meetings all day today to try and figure out how they implement home learning from tomorrow T4 secondary. They absolutely do not get info before main announcements.

Kids primary is shut, planned inset tomorrow and Tuesday which they are probably using to figure out what to do come wednesday.

BroomHandledMouser · 03/01/2021 17:48

I’ve just messaged my sons y6 teacher, she said they are ready and waiting for them after the inset day on Tuesday.

I’m in Peterborough - one of the original tier 4 areas. No cases at all at the school

Toocold · 03/01/2021 17:48

Sorry slight deviation from what you’re talking about but am I missing something? Why is Boris talking on Wednesday? I thought it was the following Wed isn’t the review every two weeks?

BigPlanes · 03/01/2021 17:50

So the decision has already been made when the schools are still shut? Forward planning as much as they can with so little decision making from the government. It’s an awful situation all round.

Rinoachicken · 03/01/2021 17:51

OP surely you knew any announcement would be last minute from the school. Personally I'm amazed anyone wasn't already making plans with the mindset that schools wouldn't be returning.

I don’t recall saying I was surprised, or unprepared? For the record. I was not at all surprised and I am prepared.

In East Anglia and our primary has announced they won't be opening either.

The schools know just as much as we do and get the same non communication from the government, please don't think otherwise.

I'm glad ours is closing. But I'm furious the school felt they had to make the decision due to no DfE guidance and complete silence from the government on this.

Posturesorposes · 03/01/2021 17:55

Other schools in surrey have sent emails yesterday saying open as usual.
