What will a 'lockdown' involve?

I see more and more people are calling on a full lockdown and wondered - other than schools closing - what else would this involve?

Does BJ have the authority to command this for the whole UK, or just England?

The other nations have decided their lockdowns so I think Johnson can only implement a lockdown for England.

PJsEveryday · 03/01/2021 16:51

I don't know. I'm in Scotland and in it seems that other than small independent shops and cafes/pubs etc, everywhere else is open. And people are flocking to them, if the car parks are any indication. I had to fill up the car a few days ago, nearest one is at the supermarket at the retail park. The car parks for both sides of shopping, retail and supermarket very very busy. As it stands, closing schools is not going to lesson people mingling in the shops. We need a proper lockdown like we had at the beginning but I don't think that will happen.

hopeishere · 03/01/2021 16:54

I think schools and maybe universities not opening and all learning online.

I'm in NI and our schools are closed for a week then primary reopening and some secondary years reopening next week. All non essential retail closed. Take away only. All shops did have to close at 8pm recently and there was a "curfew" bu this seems to have lifted now. I think.

If you ask mumsnet it involves welding people into their houses. Nothing else will do.

XenoBitch · 03/01/2021 16:56

I agree. Other than schools closing, not much else can be done. Going back to the same lockdown we had in March wont happen.. that would mean removing support bubbles and I can't see BJ doing that.

peapotter · 03/01/2021 16:57

I think they may have to remove the rule of six / meeting with another household. Exercise alone etc. Just like the first lockdown.

We’re also Scotland and there are loads of people (including me) going for daily walks with a friend. I’m not looking forward to it but I think that’s the next stage.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/01/2021 16:58

For me in London it would mean the nursery closing and me going out of my mind ....as for d list celebs it means more “work” trips abroad.

These posts are never helpful and are as extreme as the few posts they try to mock.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers I wonder whether we follow the same person on Instagram... tough, tough family work trip to the Maldives.

I don’t see how they could replicate the first lockdown. Then, most people were doing the absolute minimum. Now, most people seem to be doing the maximum allowed. Would taking away the ability to meet one person outside (in T4) change much? I can’t see support bubbles being closed. Realistically, the thing they can do is close schools, but will they after this weekend’s palaver?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/01/2021 17:17

Justcallmecaptainobvious from what I’ve seen it’s not just 1 person.

In tier 4 the only thing left to close is nurseries- they wouldn’t shut takeaways and cafes (for takeaway) would they?

DumplingsAndStew · 03/01/2021 17:19

I think the only other thing would be support bubbles, etc, but you were still able to make allowances during the March lockdown for vulnerable people, and that's what I thought the support bubble thing was for? It seems many have just been using it to expand their social circle, with no real need. I can see this having to become stricter if they think it might be aiding transmission.

I didn't realise we were still allowed to meet with someone outdoors 😂 I will admit, so yes, I suppose that's something they could change too Sad

They could make them delivery only?

No sure about delivery only if that means people forced to pay a delivery fee??

You’re allowed a support bubble if a baby under 1yr old- I can’t see them taking that back and the birth partners turnaround- they won’t change that either

The criteria for being in a support bubble was that one of the 2 households had to have a an adult living alone in it.... there was nothing in the rules that said they had to be vulnerable. Loneliness and isolation can have a detrimental impact on people, hence why they were introduced.

Nine months ago, 'lockdown' was scary. Nobody had experienced anything like it before. Roads were empty. People stayed in their houses, went shopping infrequently and solo. Life went on hold.

Now though, people have worked out the loopholes of lockdown. They've done it before, have seen restrictions relaxed and then reapplied. It's not scary. There's no restrictions at the door of supermarkets so they shop en masse as it gets them out of the house. They know exactly which shops still do click & collect, so they buy what they want and collect it.

It needs to get scary again.

Tarararara · 03/01/2021 18:00

Difference between Tier 4 and March lockdown: schools and nurseries closed; only leaving house for shopping, exercise and work, no meeting with another person outside, no kids outdoor sport, no support/toddler groups, no non-essential click and collect.

Probably more, but those are the ones I've thought of
