Israel vaccine program

How long do we thing it will be before Israel see a difference in infections and death numbers.

They have vaccinated over 10% of the population which includes 40% of the over 60's.

Will it be a gradual drop? It's going to be a long way off before the uk hits just our first group of over 80's and health care workers.

I'm really interested in seeing how they get on.

I would hope they will see a fall in deaths in about 3-4 weeks.

I wouldn't expect much protection from vaccine before about 10 days. So that's when people should start to benefit from it - and you should start to see those people not dying as they otherwise might have done 10-14 days later.

That's what I was thinking, I'm trying to hold on to the positives right now instead of looking at our numbers.

It would be great to see their numbers coming down over the next few weeks, and the number of critical patients reduced further.

I’ll be interested too.

Not sure I trust what our own government seems to be doing, spacing out second doses to 12 weeks instead of the manufacturer recommended 3, so it will take longer here and might be watered down? They should simply get on with it as originally planned and have the right infrastructure in place.

Mummyto3gorgeousgirlies · 03/01/2021 15:06

I think I read that over 70s are 7.5% of their population and they expect once they are vaccinated there will be 75% drop in hospitalizations....

sashagabadon · 03/01/2021 15:07

It’ll be really interesting and encouraging to watch. I know we can’t for obvious reasons but it would be so interesting to say vaccinate one whole city or town here in the U.K. and watch how / when the cases/ deaths rates drop. Obviously completely impractical and unethical etc
But we can get some idea from Israel

I don't know why our government can't just get on with it, as recommended and quickly. I can't believe we only have 530k of our own bloody vaccine starting tomorrow.

Our leisure Center was supposed to start vaccinating tomorrow and it has been delayed by a week as they weren't sent any.

I'm going to obsess over a country seeming to get it right while waiting for our idiots to organise themselves.

Bit harsh lunar. The roll out here has been pretty good so far. France has barely started. Germany have had a few cock ups too. We’re doing relatively well on an international comparison.

For me the interesting question is what will happen with Israel’s case numbers rather than deaths. I wonder how soon they will start to fall and if they will fall in the same proportion as deaths or if there will remain a fair number of cases as people carry the virus but don’t get ill. Presumably testing will always pick up a higher proportion of symptomatic than asymptomatic cases unless you test everyone all the time.
It will hopefully give us some clues as to the impact of the vaccine on spread.

lunar1 · 03/01/2021 15:38

Do we know what restrictions they have in place?

As they are starting with older groups the impact should be seen on hospitalizations before total case numbers.

The bulk of the hospitalizations are older people - while the majority of cases are in younger groups who won't be vaccinated for a while yet.

To those complaining about a delay in rollout, we had a huge effort to get the available Pfizer stock out. Then we had our borders closed, and although sea and air freight would have got in, logistics would naturally slow down as a result and because of the Christmas holiday. After a shit year, you can't complain that many people in the logistics chain and NHS took a few days off to be with their families. Likewise for the civil servants in PHE and government departments who coordinate the operation. The armchair critics, sitting at home eating Quality Street, are really out in force on MN. I have a family member working on this and she had 2 days off. From tomorrow, she'll be working 10-12 hour days and her team are all stressed about the numbers they need to get through their centre.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/01/2021 16:16

Well said, DianaT1969.

lunar1 · 03/01/2021 16:30

No time off with family here, dh had his leave cancelled for the third time, he had two days of his two weeks booked leave from the NHS.

It's just all frustrating here, we finally have a way to fight this. The public doesn't need their confidence in the vaccine shaking, which is exactly what's happening now with the information in the media about the second dose.

We just need to see that vaccines are available and are being carried out. Appointments went out here last week and were cancelled yesterday as there are no vaccines.

I know what a logistical nightmare it is to have everything in the right place at the right time, it's just incredibly frustrating. So I will look forward to seeing how a country significantly further down the line are getting on and look forward to us doing the same.
