Tighter restrictions likely/possible-what could these include?

I'm already in tier 4 and CEV so the only thing that I can think of is support bubbles not being allowed and primary schools closing. I've barely been out since February so I'm not aware of what is still open/available and therefore what could be taken away. Where can restrictions go from here?
I do think they closing schools would probably prevent the need for more restrictions but who knows. I've lost the plot with all this now.

The OP asked what could they restrict further, posters are answering. Not saying they agree with it.

I dont think there is any harm in a shop selling non essential items along with essential items but others will disagree.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/01/2021 13:55
@PinkSparklyPussyCat “ Not this again. If a shop is open and sells something then what's the harm”

Because it encourages people to go to the shops for something to do rather than essential shopping.
So you'd rather they threw stock away when it goes out of date rather than sell it? How to make life harder for the small shops.

DayBath · 03/01/2021 13:58

I found myself going in and out more often too @whatnow41 . I'm not disabled but if you forget an item you end up having to loop back around the entire shop just to get something you missed from the previous aisle , so it just encourages more prolonged mixing. I never saw the point of it really and I agree it's a crap system for those who struggle to walk far.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 03/01/2021 13:58

I agree that essential needs to be clarified. My neighbours are doing essential shopping 3+ times a day 🙄

Oh I think some do! My big worry is for the small shops who will have to throw stock away and lose their profits. There's an amazing corner shop near me and I'd hate to think of them struggling.
TempsPerdu · 03/01/2021 14:03

If i were them i would require masks on kids in supermarkets etc/public transport. over age 5. And yes stop scouts and kids activities. Playgrounds not sure. Maybe they should swab some. But im convinced it will survive much longer especially on metal equipment in thus cold weather and nobody hand gels kids hands. New york seems to do well and there kids have masks when out and about. They need to close all primary for 10-14 days after new year

You really hate kids don’t you? Every single one of your ‘suggestions’ involves making children’s lives more miserable and restricted than they already are. Why not close golf courses and put an end to all the over 70s meeting up for a nice wander round the garden centre?

CodyBurns · 03/01/2021 14:03

@PinkSparklyPussyCat “ So you'd rather they threw stock away when it goes out of date rather than sell it? How to make life harder for the small shops.”

I don’t think anyone would argue that food is essential pink! And no I certainly don’t agree with throwing perfectly good food away! Confused

By non essential I meant things that won’t ‘spoil’ e.g curtains, toys, games, bed linen etc. But agree with other posters that ‘essential’ should be clarified.

Bbq1 · 03/01/2021 14:03

ALL schools closed including those for SEd. Allowed out once a day within a 6 mile radius. All shops bar supermarkets shutting. Sounds horrendous....

TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 14:05

I’m at work now ( lunch break)

Essential non food store. Diy.

Store is heaving with people browsing paint and wallpaper. Buying storage and shelving. Choosing houseplants. Getting wood cut to size for little home projects. Lots of families in with bored kids.... couples wandering round browsing with a Costa in hand. Couple of girls on her lies and a few other kids standing on trollies

What fun!

TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 14:06

@Fivemoreminutes1

One-way pavements Curfews Children’s playgrounds closed No moving house

Just a guess

Yes please to the first one but not just for covid.

I can't see how curfews help, the virus doesn't just come out at night. Playgrounds - what else are parents meant to do with their kids? And how does stopping people moving house help.

I’m hearing tales of people who could work from home being forced into work by micromanaging bosses. That needs to stop Yes, this is outrageous - plenty of them on MN too, justifying why their allegedly lazy employees need to be in the office.

Plumbers, carpenters etc only do emergency work, where there is risk to life or serious risk to property in the middle of winter it would be nice to have heating and hot water, too, not just fixing a leak or dealing with a dangerous electrical problem. I don't think government interference should go this far.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/01/2021 14:08

Apologies @CodyBurns, I was talking about what some people think of as non essential food that smaller shops might have to throw away, like chocolate, ice cream (I'll argue to the death that ice cream is essential!) etc.

To be fair though curtains, bed linen is essential in some circumstances. Preventing shops from selling certain items will play into the hands of Amazon. I have no issue with them but I know a lot of people do.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 03/01/2021 14:09

@MythicalBiologicalFennel

Curfews? I can't see how they help but it seems to have worked in France.
We’ve been under 8pm-6pm curfew here in NI since Boxing Day.
TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 14:09

‘Essential’ for our store was clarified very early on but soon scrapped

Lightbulbs
Fuses
Heaters
Adhesives
Sheet timber
Roofing felt
Screws nails and fittings
Plug sockets and elec items
Plumbing items
Waste fittings
Hand tools
Sand/sandbags

These are the essentials we should be selling

LookMoreCloselier · 03/01/2021 14:10

In Scotland children 5 and older are already wearing masks in shops and public transport as mandated. And lots of people are putting under 5s in masks too. We were in england earlier in the year and quite shocked to see kids even 10 years old ish mask free in shops as its not what we are used to here.

TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 14:12

Back in March retail customers bought all the building items for their own home projects to do during lockdown

This left out trade customers....self employed builders/plumbers/electricians with nowhere to buy stock so they had no livelihood

Quite a few were tearful. It was horrible

TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 14:13

Sorry if kids can’t be in schools then we don’t want them in shops on a day out!

Keep kids away, they aren’t even required to wear masks! How is that fair on retail staff

YouBoughtMeAWall · 03/01/2021 14:13

Sorry 8pm-6am

AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 14:16

I don't think they can stop support bubbles. I look after my mum and dad every day (they live apart) and I do their food shopping, appointments and medication, housework etc. They're both housebound so it's essential. Lots of people need this kind of support.

fluffi · 03/01/2021 14:19
 • close zoos, farms, other outdoor attractions that are still open eg NT/RHS sites
 • exercise only permitted close to home, no more driving to a further away park / coast / woods (sadly that means walking up and down residential streets for those of us in urban areas for a while)
 • exercise outdoors alone or with members of household only
 • close playgrounds (these seem very crowded when I go past and not much social distancing happening between the adults or children.
 • close places of worship
 • encourage people to limit number of times they go to shops a week, e.g. discourage the people going to supermarkets because they are because bored indoors *make "covid secure" mandatory in supermarkets and shops - e.g. law not just guidelines, so they have to reintroduce one way systems and carefully control numbers in / out
AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 14:21

Click and collect for shopping, unless you are totally unable to. Personally I prefer that anyway!

lljkk · 03/01/2021 14:30

"One member of the household can walk the dog only 50 metres from your property."

So... a person living in a crowded area with narrow pavements would have to walk back and forth (say... 12x if it's a biggish or energetic dog, twice a day). And this would reduce virus spread so much more, for them to stay in that crowded zone for 20 minutes, rather than go somewhere with very few people that is only 2 minutes walk away & spend 16 minutes in the empty spacious place, twice a day.

Sure, that makes loads of sense (not).

I thought already in Tier 4 we didn't have

take-away beer from pubs
scouts/guides meeting
hairdressers

Curfews seem to have worked in France

the French data get reported in a very uneven way. Their deaths have stabilised rather than stopped rising, I guess, but it's not like curfews are the only lockdown measure they are following. French are considering Lockdown #3.

The likes of Home Bargains and BnM need to close. Around here they are used by families to fill in the day with a browse with the kids. On my way to the supermarket yesterday there was a huge queue of families waiting to get in and I doubt they were after essentials.
Boots and Superdrug need the pharmacy part open only. Not to be open for groups of teens browsing the make-up and hair dyes and groups rummaging in the sale section looking for half price gifts like they were when I went for my prescription.Hmm.

QueenPawPaws · 03/01/2021 14:40

People are still travelling too...
the roads up there are lethal in winter and they put road closures up and told people not to go up there
This was the next day 🤷🏽‍♀️

@lljkk
I am just quoting what a lockdown in Spain was like back in March & April . I'm not saying it was right or made sense but that's what happened. Some of the restrictions were crazy . But it worked ...we've recently had local restrictions on a minor level but nothing as bad as the UK recently.
