If you are a teacher are you allowed to wear a face mask in class?

I mean like a regular face mask, not FFP3 ones. I know they are not advised, but do you wear one anyway? Surely that would make teachers feel safer?
Sorry if this has already been covered.

The front of my box is about 5vm from the front row!

queenofthelamas · 03/01/2021 15:42

Nope DofE doesn't allow

DipSwimSwoosh · 03/01/2021 15:43

Yes I am allowed but being claustrophobic I want to avoid wearing a mask whenever possible.

profpoopsnagle · 03/01/2021 15:51

Yes, and we are allowed to wear a visor as well. Primary. I don't wear one because I really need to lip read to aid my hearing and using my face is a major part of my teaching and behaviour management skill set.

For me, teaching with a face mask on would be like asking a surgeon to operate on a patient with thick rubber gloves, it would hinder my job more than help.

I am not bothered my being around people without masks on but I would support any teacher that wanted to wear a mask or visor to do so. Only 2 children in my class have ever bought masks in to school. One wore it for a morning and then got fed up with it, the other dropped it on the floor by their chair for the day.

We’ve been told not to - except on corridors where they are mandatory - but my head is highly reasonable and I suspect wouldn’t complain if I did. I do tend to when kids are entering and exiting the room, or any time where there is movement.

olivo · 03/01/2021 16:14

We have to wear either wear a mask or visor at all times, or be behind Perspex screens at our desks. I wear a mask when out of my classroom, a visor when explaining/moving around the room and spend more time behind my desk than ever before!

BrokenCircle · 03/01/2021 16:21

No, we were told we were not to wear them in class. Children were allowed to wear them in class if they wanted.

Farcry66 · 03/01/2021 16:29

Secondary school, we were told from day 1 that we could choose to wear a mask if we wanted to and the school provided masks and visors. After half term, masks in corridors for all members of the school became mandatory. I noticed a huge increase in students wearing masks in lessons in the last couple of weeks before the holidays as well.

Interesting to read this... I teach in France and we all have to wear masks, and have done (secondary pupils and teachers) at all times since we went 'back' at the end of the last school year. I have never seen my pupils without masks as I'm new in my current school.
It is definitely more tiring and I get spots, headaches and feel breathless, especially on hot days. Kids thoughtfully remove their masks to sneeze and cough on the desks /each other. It's a nightmare! We sanitize the hands of each pupil at the start of each lesson and we have spray and kitchen towel to wipe down desks if needed. The cleaner does all door handles and light switches in her zone at each breaktime.
As a language teacher with a few hearing impaired pupils I have had to buy a couple of transparent masks as government promises to equip us have sadly not come true.

SuperbGorgonzola · 03/01/2021 16:32

I wear a mask in all communal spaces such as corridors and when on break duty. I don't wear a mask when I am actively teaching as I think it impedes communication to be honest.

IamHyouweegobshite · 03/01/2021 16:37

Yes, as of November we were instructed to wear a face covering visor or mask, whilst in communal areas, such as corridors, we were also told that we could wear masks in the classroom. I wore a mask and visor, sanitised, socially distanced and caught covid from school.

GingerandTilly · 03/01/2021 16:37

Lots of teachers are being told they can’t wear one as it is against government guidance to wear them i the classroom. I’m cv and fortunate that I am allowed to wear one though am primary so not sure how effective it is if kids not wearing them also. Sage advice on the new strain certainly supports mask use.

I think it is criminal that the government refuses to mandate their use in the classroom in current circumstances.

TheSilentStars · 03/01/2021 16:42

Yes, because it's mandatory here in Italy for all staff and all students.
Has to be one of three types only, and can't be hand made or any kind of fabric.

anothernamereally · 03/01/2021 16:51

I do but I'm self employed and work in several different schools working 1 to 1, it's impossible to remain 2m apart - some heads don't like it but they all signed my risk assessment.

Sarcobaleno · 03/01/2021 16:57

Cannot get my head round the lunacy of the English mask guidance. They are the only country that have a non-mask policy and massively high rates. Go figure. Sincere sympathy and support for all school staff in English schools.

ChloeDecker · 03/01/2021 16:58

Guidance is different in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England, OP.

In England, the guidance is not to wear masks in classrooms.

In Scotland, the guidance was changed to support masks in classrooms. Not fully sure about Northern Ireland where you are or Wales.

If you are a teacher are you allowed to wear a face mask in class?
2boysand1princess · 03/01/2021 17:12

My sister is a teacher so I asked her. She said they wear masks when moving through the school building, visor when meeting kids at start of lesson as they enter the room and then no mask or visor whilst teaching.
They don’t have perplex screens and no such thing as 2M social distancing.
She works in a large secondary school.
