How to make schools safe

Bramblespoint · 03/01/2021 09:34

I think most people will agree that the way schools are currently operating is not 'COVID' secure.

Most people would also probably prefer to keep children at school as opposed to go back to home learning.

So how do we make schools safer? Mass testing? But who carries out the testing?

More PPE? Would this impinge on learning? Kids wearing masks? Some would probably tolerate this well others would not.

I just can't see a way to make schools work for children and staff. Shut them and children loose out. Keep them open and expose staff to enormous risk. A teacher near to me died last week Sad

Good points raised original poster and surprisingly no one to reply so I will give this a go!

How about trying this on for size? I think anyone anywhere in the UK going to in person school (unless you are Isles of Scilly or a locality with very little mutating Covid) is super brave. The teachers are under appreciated! And what happens if they all fall ill (too)?

Obviously in a medical pandemic war we need healthcare, food, energy, technology, logistics and law and order but for a temporary period perhaps educational is not as critical?

What is the difference (with the mutating extra child contagious strains) between a school with mass gatherings of multiple households than any other indoor or enclosed setting (eg shared mass public transportation)?

Evidently despite linked testing - schools are just another Covid vector for "inadvertent" asymptomatic rapid super spreading and incubation.

The only way current overcrowded schools can be safer (not Covid risk free) is either build or use temporary buildings eg Nightingale NHS concept, or half the normal daily in person schooling intake with alternative days/weeks (staggered days for each year group) etc and importantly mandate all globally adopted best practices with regards to all Covid risk mitigation behaviour including full PPE etc for all no exemptions no excuses and no weak link. Use perplex shielding and possibly clear face coverings to accommodate handicapped members, keep building well ventilated and so called incubation bubbles to a minimum size. Unless real tangible (not superficial) Covid mitigation is implemented and importantly compulsory, accurate and regular asymptomatic test, track, trace and isolate is carried out - then all bets are off!

The Covid weak link commute from each family's Covid free home needs to be addressed seriously too. No more schooling way out of the catchment area and changing modes of public transport across town to get in and out with exposure to endless asymptomatic "inadvertent" Covid tag. Therefore families need to walk to a local school in the open air (social distanced on the pavement) for short distances and short time duration to ensure the daily commute Covid risk is minimised.

Alternative option is only remote blended schooling where Covid can't be transferred without close contact.

After a year and already 70k+ Covid fatalities including a few children and a legal challenge for safety at work in educational settings - perhaps the soft blasé approach is now dated?

The Covidiots like those forever unmasked, non distanced at illegal mass parties and protests outside overwhelmed London hospitals etc etc having no civic duty nor respect for vulnerable in the community and so needs to be not just criminalised and fined when caught but also given end of vaccine and ICU ventilator queue status ie reverse priority as hopefully a deterrent. They believe it's all a hoax anyway so should not feel too concerned while lives and livelihoods are destroyed due (in part) to such behaviour with their lack of self Covid mitigation and selfishness recklessness.

Please note not a ramble but unless the pandemic can be under a little control and not rampantly out of control and without mass two dose vaccination - we need to take things a bit more seriously and think why some advance nations (eg Taiwan and New Zealand etc) have minimal Covid lives and livelihoods destruction. Delayed reactionary political leadership is no substitute for proactive alert national Covid damage limitation management.

By doing all of the things that @noblegiraffe and many other teachers like her have been asking for since the summer.

Rota basis so only in when needed for practical subjects with rest taught remote.

Additional buildings utilised. Masks for all. Give parents the choice to not send if they don’t want to. Teachers behind screens like in retail etc. Removal of school places if caught not SI or breaking the rules. Most of all, reliable quick day testing with vaccines for all over 16.

Basically do we have any other choice mums (and dads)?

Ideally we need the supposedly 90% accurate lateral flow rapid (30 minutes) as well as anti body tests and not just the standard NHS 70% accurate swab test.

There is also the scientific issue of false test negatives as one can be infected but not yet contagious too (obviously).

Is there appetite and capacity for weekly pre school entry compulsory testing. Many nations only permit entry with a very current confirmed negative test would schools afford such controls?

I am not an expert but I understand from trusted medical sources that the only slightly less bad news is that technically this is no Ebola as Covid fatalities as a percentage of infected is still super super low with probably 1-2% passing away. Usually those with other preexisting vulnerabilities as rarely any pur Covid only fatalities unless viral load was that overwhelming.

Worrying subject matter but nevertheless nice to see some traction here. So feel free to disagree as happy to learn from your alternative analysis and if necessary agree to disagree accordingly.

Stay safe all as this time it is more serious than a year ago when little science was known and Brits arguing about masks etc. You definitely do not want the more dangerous South African or any newer forever mutating variant nor long Covid!

Firstly you make children self isolate outside of school hours (as in no going to the supermarket or scouts) and then you keep children in the same group and classroom all day (and with as few different teachers as possible given the needs for certain subjects to be taught by specialists).

StatisticalSense · 03/01/2021 17:10

Whatever you do you don't implement 'solutions' that keep schools open in a fashion but actually lead to worse outcomes than total closures as this is totally pointless and is still not as safe as total closure (such as rotas).

StatisticalSense · 03/01/2021 17:13

And by isolate outside of school hours I mean living with the same parent permanently, ending childcare bubbles for those of school age, and limiting support bubbles to those without school aged children.

redcandlelight · 03/01/2021 17:13

I suspect there is not much that can make schools a lot safer.
not in uk and my dc school has masks mandatory in classrooms, teacher behind a clear shower curtain screen, breaks outside very frequently to allow rooms to be aired, pe only outdoors, hand washing facilities...

still lots of covid cases and schools are closed for at least another 2 weeks.
