Where are people contracting covid

England101 · 02/01/2021 21:56

I work in the NHS treating patients with Covid I wear a face shield, face mask, gloves and apron. I wash my hands, change my clothes as soon as I get home and wear new clean clothes everyday l only go out for work and shopping. I use zoom to socialise and I’ve taken this time to learn ( webinars) and start yoga. lf i do go out I wear a mask, regularly sanitise my hands and sanitise any products like post that comes into my home. I do this because I’ve seen the terrible effects of Covid and I’ve NEVER had covid ( I have access to 2 home tests per week).

A few friends of mine who have been WFH or furloughed since March have managed to contract COVID in the last few weeks/months. They with live along or with a partner (also WFH or furloughed) some other very small children ( ie not in nursery or school) so I don’t understand how they have contracted the virus. Are they not adhering to the rules? Do they not wash their hands? Any thoughts?

My 15 year old brought it home from school. And they say schools are safe!!

crimsonlake · 03/01/2021 11:41

Both my relatives who live close by have covid, both retired and barely go out . I do know however that they have recently become lax and have been letting the odd vistor in.
I have worked all the way through covid and wear a mask all day, generally only go to work and a food shop. My son's returned home for Christmas, one travelled from Spain. I remain covid free as I have just had my weekly test results.

@PandemicPalava

Sorry, I should say she finished chemo a while ago but does go to the hospital for appointments, so maybe there, or the food shop. No idea
In your first post you say she hasn't been anywhere but the fact she's going to hospital appointments is significant information, she's highly likely to have caught it from a health care professional and I'm surprised you don't understand that Hmm
CandlesBlanketsandTea · 03/01/2021 12:15

I haven't read the full thread but it's obvious this virus is airborne and our homemade masks aren't going to filter out enough to be effective, we have also not been taught about properly donning and doffing. Lots of us are reusing our masks when we shouldn't (myself included) and we probably aren't washing them effectively enough to kill the virus. I think there is definitely a genetic aspect as to why some people are catching it and others aren't. On top of all of that people are breaking the rules but aren't going to come clean about it.

carlaCox · 03/01/2021 12:16

Of course I don't think supermarkets should close, we'd all starve. But I do think it's a bit silly when people in tier 4 are "popping out to the shops" everyday and then tutting when they see 3 people rather than 2 on a socially distanced walk. I'd feel a lot safer walking outside with 2 other friends on a windy day than spending 45mins in a crowded supermarket with little ventilation.

I guess I just get tired of people saying "if everyone stopped breaking the rules then we wouldn't be in this mess" when we can see from this thread that many, many people are catching covid from fully "government sanctioned" activities. We need to stop with this blame game.

One of the parents in my sons class is a nurse on a covid ward. She put a post on facebook about 2 months ago about how she has never caught covid or gave it to anyone else because of how serious she takes it. A few weeks later she caught covid, then gave it to her partner and kids.

We have another 2 friends who work on covid wards and another is a paramedic. None of them have caught it either so I dont think you are special for following the rules OP.

Apple1971 · 03/01/2021 12:28

Teacher - caught it at school

Nettleskeins · 03/01/2021 12:34

OP you may have caught it before testing came in, back in Feb. Asymptomatically. T cells rather than antibodies. Who knows?

Jrobhatch29 · 03/01/2021 12:40

Of the other people I know
My cousin - school (primary teacher)
My friend - from her DP who is a decorator and caught it after being in a positive household
My friend - has no idea
Friends husband - from work during first lockdown
Friends dad - after caring for his brother after a hospital stay
Parents neighbour - in hospital when having her baby
School mam - whole family caught it from their older ds who caught it at secondary school
My best friends SIL - school (secondary TA)
Uni friend - at school (primary teacher)
Uni friend - their son had positive test after being a close contact at nursery
Old colleague - maybe at school but his wife a nurse and she had it too
Friends mam - caught it from a restaurant along with several others on their table

I often find the people who say they haven’t been anywhere actually mean they haven’t been inside someone’s house or socialising....but they have been to umpteen other places 🧐

I agree, I also know someone who is 'shielding' but has actually seen more people than me, including dating someone for a few weeks but then goes on social media moaning about people going out! Confused
SpnBaby1967 · 03/01/2021 13:03

From breaking all the roolsz and partying like it 1999.

Is that what you want to hear OP?

Or could it be because a microscopic virus really doesnt care and it's insane to think stupid face masks bought off etsy have any hope of stopping it.

For what its worth one friend caught it working in his hospital as an NHS super star, I have no idea where I caught it from as I wfh and hadnt left the house for over 2 weeks so likelihood was one of my children, my friends dad caught it in hospital as a patient.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 03/01/2021 13:25

I like the way it's assumed that people who say they have only been to the supermarket must be lying.

Here's a thing - I can go for months without going anywhere but the supermarket in non-Covid times.

We don't all have hordes of friends and family in whose pockets we have to live.

Delatron · 03/01/2021 13:31

I don’t understand those who say they haven’t left the house for weeks and can’t work out where they picked it up. And in the next breath mention kids/teenagers...

CodyBurns · 03/01/2021 13:32

Same @SantasBritchesSpelleas - I caught covid from one trip to the supermarket and that is due to the behaviour of other shoppers, several of whom I asked for distance and they ignored me. But it’s nice that some posters are completely invalidating our experience isn’t it Confused

Delatron · 03/01/2021 13:33

And hospitals! ‘Oh I haven’t left the house for weeks apart from that hospital appointment’ hmmmm

JamSarnie · 03/01/2021 13:34

The issue is 'covid-safe' is taken to mean you can't ever catch the virus.

When everything we do, going to the supermarket, hospital, pharmacy, work, dentist, takeaway etc will bring you into contact with people and where others have been so all it means is the risk might have been reduced but unless you literally live in a bubble and grow your own veg and never see another human person it isn't 'safe'.

HibernatingTill2030 · 03/01/2021 13:34

Well, to be fair I know someone who has "only" been to the supermarket since around April. On a bus (sometimes taxi), and sometimes goes to one supermarket 10 minutes away and sometimes, for a change, to another a 45 minute bus ride away.

But if, like me, you are anti social generally it would be quite easy, if working from home and driving/walking only for completely essential things and straight back again.

Delatron · 03/01/2021 13:44

Yes only the supermarket oh yes and a bus journey sat in the same position near to the same people in a small unventilated space. But it’s definitely the supermarket and not the bus or taxi...

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 03/01/2021 13:45

@Delatron . I really haven’t . We went into tier 4 the Friday before Christmas . I went and got the few remaining bits for Christmas on the 22nd. That’s it , food was already sorted , as was booze and presents
There has been no need to go out . We’ve still plenty of food and My middle child has only had to buy milk once a week
We are running out of fruit but at worst I have frozen fruit if absolutely needed . I go an Iceland delivery NYE for party bits and more milk but that really is it
I don’t go to hospital for appointments for anything and order medication through the email gp system . I’ve got a few months supply so don’t even need to go the pharmacy
I’ve always got a stock of paracetamol in the cupboard but as a rule we are quite healthy
I’m assuming ,if I have Covid it MUSThave been one of my children bringing it in , but I’m the only one feeling a little poorly
My car hasn’t moved off the drive for weeks

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 03/01/2021 13:48

My daughter walks the dog round the block twice a day , he does need a proper run over a park , but I’ll leave that for now , my local park is very very quiet anyway

inquietant · 03/01/2021 14:08

Delatron · 03/01/2021 14:20

But @HaveANiceFuckingDay you have children? They don’t have to be ill to spread it. Sorry but that’s there most likely scenario. Not the one little trip to the shops but the children!

SparklingLime · 03/01/2021 15:25

Is your username the name of the new variant, @England101?

WonderfulWinde · 03/01/2021 16:06

I know exactly where we all got if from. Mum, dad and I are all CEV and haven't been out in months (I cared for my parents). No shops, walks, pubs nothing. No kids who have been at school. No visitors.
