How long before those in support of schools shutting will soon be shouting for them to open again?

How many weeks before MN is full of threads about lazy teachers, substandard home learning and demanding schools to open again? It won't be long...

Where have you been there is a clear battle between parents and teachers going on within mumsnet. It's rarely the same people who want them closed then open more the one not getting what they want get frustrated and vocal.

SallyLovesCheese · 02/01/2021 20:04

I don't think some people have ever stopped posting about lazy, workshy teachers who aren't special and get 3 months holiday a year yet are whingeing about doing their jobs.

We will never do anything right in the eyes of these posters. They seem to find comfort in putting teachers down, particularly anonymously on the Internet.

nosswith · 02/01/2021 20:04

Weeks? Sadly it will be shorter than that.

Substandard home learning is not the fault of teachers who have had insufficient resources, not enough laptops, poor broadband speeds such as in rural areas, homes with limited space, or trying to teach children in families with abusive relationships.

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2021 20:06

I won't xx

But then again, I was always more in favour of a) more safety in schools and b) allowing temporary homeschooling for CEV people.

We can homeschool fairly easily until we get the vaccine, we have time, resources and the wherewithal tot each, but I appreciate we are lucky in that respect.

OP, you're not keeping up with events, there's already been a thread anticipating how awful online provision will be because...er...it was last time.

It's like teenagers pre-drinking before going to the clubs.

Upyoursism · 02/01/2021 20:15

I keep laughing to myself (or I'll probably cry) at all the mum's saying they don't want their DC at school and wondering when the reality of having their DC at home long term trying to home school/work/look after siblings/keep on top of the house etc., before they're at the end of their tether again. It's fascinating how quickly people forget.

@TheEchtMeaningofChristmas missed that one.

You mean, people learning from prior experience?!
Timeturnerplease · 02/01/2021 20:18

Me, I’ll be shouting for them to open again. I do not want a blanket closure. Rotas, masks, funding for cleaning and supply cover yes. A short period of online learning now to put these in place yes. But not a full lockdown.

Oh, and I’m a primary teacher....

Catawaul · 02/01/2021 20:18

I'm allowed to think both. I don't want to send them in but don't want them at home either. Rock and a hard place etc!

Lastbonestanding · 02/01/2021 20:26

I think it is different people. Mumsnet isn't made up of thousands of people with the same opinion.

Andi2020 · 02/01/2021 20:26

The ones that will be complaining about school been closed are the same ones having house parties and mixing then they think the teachers should have to sit with their kids in class.
I'm not a teacher just making a comment
My dd friends had house parties quite a few over xmas in the same house
My dd did not go to any off them
The mum posted photos with them all and then she is commenting under the school fbook page saying they need to be in school her kids have been off 3 times since September for been in contact with someone this makes me very angry.
People are dying from covid19 because people are not listening to advice
I know people are bored but wise up people or kids need education work together not against each other.

HmmSureJan · 02/01/2021 20:28

I love my DD's school and I could not be more grateful for the work they did implementing on line learning. You'll never hear a word of complaint from me.

Upyoursism · 02/01/2021 20:33

I think if schools shut now they'll be a hell of a time getting them open again. I can almost guarantee it.

Why are (some ) people on here so cynical?
There seems little appetite for considering others’ points of view and engaging seriously.

1 nanosecond after the internet goes out and the resulting meltdown. Xmas Blush

I simultaneously want school open for one DC yet closed for safety.

Schools need to be safe. Hopefully they will be able to put more measures in place.

annevonkleve · 02/01/2021 21:26

Schools can't be "safe". There is no such thing.

However, while I think parents are big and ugly enough to make up their own minds about whether to send their children in if they are worried about them (or themselves) getting ill - I do think school staff should be prioritised for the vaccine and while that's done (expeditiously) it make sense to keep schools closed except to exam years and vulnerable/keyworkers' children.

I agree that many parents who are screaming about it not being "safe" will be on here in a month's time screaming about the stress of "home-schooling".

Be careful what you wish for.

Absolutely, It will be after Easter.

No they are dying because there is a virus and for whatever reason they are particularly susceptible to it. This constant blame game is so tedious.

Exactly this! The most vocal parent at my DC’s school who is pushing the whole usforthem rubbish, schools must be open, lazy teachers, why should kids have to isolate and so on is the one who plasters her Facebook account with family get together, sleepovers, going to Christmas events when one or other of her children are meant to be isolating. She bleats on and on about not being able to work from home with her DC at home yet appears to go out of her way to worsen the situation. Hmm
lazylinguist · 02/01/2021 21:37

Why do people have to be so polarised on this? Cases in schools were very high. Closing them for a while will help bring cases down, but will be very hard on working parents and on some kids. It's a very difficult decision for the government to make. There is no easy answer, and no solution that will please everybody. Ranting on as though it's obvious your view is unquestionably right and the opposite view is unquestionably wrong is divisive, stirs up bad feeling and is totally dimwitted.

Maryann1975 · 02/01/2021 21:45

The reason I don’t want them to close is because of how long it took to reopen them last time. I can’t remember exactly when rates came down in the spring/summer, but the schools didn’t go back quickly. They reopened to a few in June, which was probably as rates became much more manageable, when if they had reopened quicker to the majority, more parents might be slightly more open to another closure now. 6 months with no school was a lot for many to deal with. A couple of months Off then back in for half a term before the 6weeks holiday Would have maybe given the government a bit of favour with working parents.

caringcarer · 03/01/2021 10:31

I get frustrated because I keep seeing teachers say they are not allowed to wear masks. Why can't they wear them to keep children safe? Who says they can't wear them? I am confused because my foster son attends s special Secondary school where all teachers and the children wear a mask all day inside corridors and classroom and only take it off for outdoor PE and outdoor break times. Windows are also kept open so children told wear base layers and jogging suit to keep warm. Only 5 children in his school either can't or won't wear a mask or are CEV and choosing home learning which is done by 1 teacher who is also CEV so working from home. This has happened since September. My niece attends a normal secondary school and says in her school students all told wear masks inside and teachers give instructions at beginning of lesson then put on masks. Masks and visors worn by all in corridors. I don't get why some schools are choosing for children and teachers to wear masks and others not. Can someone explain to me please?

Reiningitin · 03/01/2021 10:55

I don't understand that either @caringcarer. I'm a secondary teacher and we are very much allowed to wear masks. Personally I don't as I find it difficult to talk wearing one, but we are certainly allowed.
