22.8% of our total cases (2,599,789 according to worldometers website) have been reported.
I added up the reported daily cases from 18/12/20 until 01/01/21 inclusive which totaled 593,404. 15 days and nearly a quarter of the UK's entire total. All numbers taken from worldometers. Confused

Just realized I could also add I 57,725 cases for today instead of stopping at yesterday, total cases still the same 2,599,789 which now puts us at 25% of total cases happening since the 18/12. How can they possibly open schools?

Explain to me.... please

RedskyAtnight · 02/01/2021 19:22

You are aware that the UK only started counting all cases quite recently? Back at the earlier peak in March/April there was no community testing.

Felyne · 02/01/2021 19:28

Ok. According to worldometers, the cases were as follows:
18/12 28,507
19/12 27,052
20/12 35,928
21/12 33,363
22/12 36,804
23/12 39,237
24/12 39,036
25/12 32,725
26/12 36,532
27/12 30,501
28/12 41,385
29/12 53,135
30/12 50,023
31/12 55,892
01/01 53,284
02/01 57,725
Add together; 651,129.
Worldometers says our total cases are 2,599,789 since the beginning.
Divide 651,129 by 2,599,789 then multiply by 100 to get the percentage. It's 25%

Please if I've done anything incorrectly let me know. I think this is shocking. Yes I know that in the beginning not all cases were counted but it won't make that much difference.

Do you think we had ~50,000 daily cases back in March or April?

Yikes 😭

NoSquirrels · 02/01/2021 19:59

It’s not clear if you’re drawing a conclusion from schools being closed since 18th, or you’ve just picked it to show it’s less safe now than it was at the end of last term.

Yes, I believe it is thought there were probably around 100,000 cases a day
DianaT1969 · 02/01/2021 20:21

Very few community cases were tested in the first lockdown. If we only tested in hospitals, a few workplaces and care homes now (like May), your numbers would be higher than then, but not extraordinarily so.
We weren't expecting lower numbers this winter.

@Felyne

I think the accepted view is that it was around 100k per day
louisejxxx · 02/01/2021 20:27

Yes it was definitely reported as being around 100000 cases a day and the R was somewhere between 2 and 3. But that won’t feature because we weren’t mass testing then (not even anywhere close).

emptydreamer · 02/01/2021 20:36

Yes, as many posters stated above, the consensus was that it reached low 100K's / day. Supported by later serological studies and mortality / admissions analysis.

Felyne · 02/01/2021 21:06

I didn't know it was estimated at around 100k a day back then. I feel a bit better reading that, thank you. The last two weeks are still pretty bad though.
