Anyone else fear deja vu this year?

Now first off, it's not going to be anything like as bad this year, basically because we've got the vaccines which over time will get us out of this disaster movie. However, it feels like a similar transitional year.

January and February are going to this year's March and April from last year in terms of catastrophic figures for cases, hospitalisations and deaths. They're already a write off. By Easter time things should be looking better with the vaccine being rolled out more. However, we're still going to have a lot of restrictions in place. People getting their first vaccine on Monday will have to wait until Easter time to get their second dose.

By July/August I think we'll see more normality and everyone will rush off on their holidays and a lot of parties. Then we'll get to September and panic again because the schools and universities will be spreading the virus again at the start of the winter season and because most young people likely won't have had the vaccine at that point.

It didn't help that as I got up this morning and there was a nice blue sky (albeit a cold winter morning) I contemplated plans for going out for a drink and something to eat, like a normal Saturday. Then it dawned on me, i'll just be sat in all day again with a brisk walk in the freezing cold to break up the monotony. It'll be like this for months yet.

I already wish it was 2022.

Yes I feel this, I totally agree with the restrictions as cases are out of control but it doesn’t make the monotony any less gruelling

Went to the park today to feed the ducks, it was freezing and half the village had already been so the ducks weren’t hungry. Had an upset DC asking why the ducks aren’t hungry

Because every other person in this village has also fed the ducks this morning because there is fuck-all else to do

@Cheerios444 It can't be helped, but it's no less depressing. Only hope is for a super fast roll out of vaccines which seems like wishful thinking.

I expect another year pretty much of social distancing and masks, albeit with things opening up by Easter.

Yes, I agree. I know we’ve got the vaccine so things will get better but I just feel really meh today.

It’s like we were all focusing on Christmas - which albeit weird and a bit crap did give us a purpose and something to look forward to - and now that’s gone it’s just cold and dark and back to zoom meetings in the same four walls Sad.

We’d usually book a holiday around now to take the edge off going back to work but don’t even want to do that as I’m not at all confident it’ll happen.

Realise we’re lucky to have jobs, our health etc but can’t help feeling quite despondent today.

I definitely fear that the schools will be closed until Easter now.

I said back in March be careful what you wish for - and with a few exceptions for YR/1 and 6 and others schools were closed until September.

Here we go again.

And yes life is so dull at the moment. This time last year I was visited a friend overseas - at the moment it's pointless booking anything and it's just dull boring dull boring dull!

I don't think there will be panic in September. Even if young people aren't vaccinated they are much less likely to need hospital treatment so we won't see hospitals being overwhelmed like this winter.

The next couple of months will be difficult but I see some improvements by Easter.

pursuedbyablackdog · 02/01/2021 18:23

No, I think things will improve this year, but I think the next month will be horrible and I think we need to close schools (I don't want schools to close...but neither do I want teachers falling ill or children spreading it to their parents etc) and we need to get the infection rate down. But come the spring things will improve.

BlueBaubles12 · 02/01/2021 18:53

The start is going to be rough but I expect things will improve from there. However, the government MUST use the summer months to prepare fully for the winter so we don’t have a repeat of this total shitshow.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/01/2021 18:55

The next few weeks will be rough, but we will reach the peak soon and numbers will drop. And vaccination will massively reduce numbers.

I agree we'll see improvements by Easter, but I can see us in some kind of Tier 1 through the summer, where things are open but within social distancing while the vaccine is rolled out.

Hopefully there won't be a panic in September, but when the schools open and university students travel around the country, it will likely see an explosion of cases. Hopefully it won't lead to more restrictions.
