Year 6 SATS - do you think they will be cancelled?

With schools closing and for maybe longer than 2 weeks; does anyone think they will cancel the SATS? I'm not sure how long the children revise for or what impact it will have on secondary school.

Maybe there are mums on here whose children missed it last year that can give some insight.

I doubt it, unless schools close for a large chunk of time. At the moment, only some primaries are closed for two weeks, so not enough for the DfE to scrap the tests.

In many schools, Year 6 start revision from Easter, although in some places it starts earlier than that. It depends on your school and their results/Ofsted/what the cohort is like etc.

Whether or not there are Year 6 tests will have no impact for them at secondary school. In Year 7 they may well do some kind of baseline assessment as often secondaries use the tests to predict future grades.

I honestly wouldn't worry about SATS as the scores are largely meaningless to children & just an indication of the school's overall performance.

Personally I think they'll go ahead this year as not all schools are closing but obviously this could change.
The children have to revise a lot at school but it absolutely isn't worth any extra work at home.
Secondary schools will do their own assessments in September regardless of SATS results.

Secondary schools use teacher performance grades rather than SAT'S grades anyway so shouldn't have any impact on them in y7 if they do not sit them.
My ds is in y6 also im hoping they do get cancelled as they are no reflection on him personally and it Will not define his future prospects in any way. SATs prep usually starts in y5 (or at least it does in my dc school) so they missed the majority of that already without any further disruptions added in

I’m not sure if they’ll be cancelled - who knows with this government but I wanted to come on and reassure you that DS missed his SATs last year and it has had zero impact on him settling into secondary school. He’s settled in really well and even when we were visiting secondaries, not one could really give me a definitive answer on what they do with the results - they all said we test again in Y7 and look at the whole child. DS goes to an inner city academy. Hope that helps.

I hope secondaries do their own assessments as I feel like pulling my child out of school for a while and even though I will homeschool him, I worry that if it falls on teacher predictions then he will get a low grade due to absence.
Wsdhgujn · 02/01/2021 12:02

Shouldn’t do. SATS are to test schools not children, and schools are supposed to be teaching remotely even with school closures.

If putting up a few twinkle worksheets does produce the excellent learning teachers on here claim then SATS can take place as the kids will be fully up to speed by may and even if the school is opened fully exams are by there nature done in a socially distanced manner! If the final results are not great it will be a good chance for schools to revisit how effective their remote learning offer is.

It will also important for secondary schools to understand if and by how much this cohort is behind academically to think about its impact on the secondary school curriculum. Assuming that kids either are or are not where year six usually are when starting secondary school would seem a risk and general data would be helpful to see objectively where children actually are up to.

disconnecteddrifter · 02/01/2021 12:04

We did cats this year and mixed ability teaching until they could be administered. Usually we set by sats because secondary school progress measures are based on them.
Not sure if they will be cancelled this year or not. With talks about lockdown lasting until early summer in some form or another I think they might be but govt wont tell schools until the day before

worriedwellworrier · 02/01/2021 12:07

I really hope so, my son has been anxious about them since year 5, pointless stressful exercise for children.

peacockfeather11 · 02/01/2021 12:15

@Wsdhgujn our school does exactly that, put up twinkl worksheets and maybe some videos. I gave up in the last lockdown once I realised they were just worksheets and none of it was being marked.

Can't see why they would be cancelled unless schools are still physically closed. They are only a test of maths/English i.e. no particular requirement for children to do anything different. Some schools go totally overboard on revision, so missing this will be a bonus :) If anything, it would be useful for secondary schools to have these results to see how this year compares to other years.

Wsdhgujn · 02/01/2021 12:19

Yes ours too! We gave up although I got a tutor to keep him ticking over as well.

He is year five though not year six so longer to catch up but also in a London borough where schools are shut for the foreseeable.

humtar · 02/01/2021 12:22

SPAG paper has already been scrapped for this year. I think if we are still having to shut down bubbles in April/May then they will have to be scrapped as trying to administer them with groups of children absent will be a nightmare.

kidhelp · 02/01/2021 12:24

Who cares the tests were a bit being anyway

peacockfeather11 · 04/01/2021 21:04

I guess my questioned has been answered! No exams will go ahead.

Just to reassure you mine had Sat's cancelled and teacher gave a predicted grade in order for secondary school to group them pre secondary assessments.
They then had assessments in October and according to ds teacher there were less children moved groups than they have in ordinary years and in both ds and dds classes they say only one or two have moved sets.
Seems teacher assessment has given a better prediction than Sat's.
In contrast when ds1 went to secondary school a few years ago there was mass timetable changes in the November once they'd been assessed at secondary school.
