If your child is in an exam year will they be going to school/college on the 11th?

My dc is in year 13, awaiting Uni offers, A levels around the corner, currently revising. On the 11th he’ll be the only member of our household going anywhere other than to buy food. School have been great at implementing as many precautions as possible and he’s as sensible as you can expect from an 18 year old, but we’re also hearing that the new variant is more transmissible. I’m not happy about him going in, he’ll be our weakest link on the other hand he’s about to take his exams and has already had to work incredibly hard to catch up on all that was missed last year,

I’d love to know what you’re all thinking?

18yo at sixth form college, running on a week in / week online basis (alternating yr 12 / 13) since September.
Yes he will be going in (at present).
Current plan is online w/c 4th. In college w/c 11th. In college mocks w/c 18th (when yr 12 will also be in, strict segregation - don't think this is sensible myself). In college w/c 25th. Then back to week in / week online rotation.
I think they should be wearing masks throughout the day.

I'm WFH (majority of the time).
Yr 10 was in school from September and had to isolate for the last 2 weeks of term, but no symptoms.
Bloke I'm seeing (support bubble, don't live together but see him most weekends) is in work, but a large workshop with only 2 of them in it.

So yes, the kids are the most likely to be exposed. Hence we aren't seeing my 70+ parents.

Ds2 will be going in

His college changed the lessons so they get one or two 2 1/2 hour lessons on most days....so he has one lesson a day twice a week and two lessons a day twice a week and a day when he doesn’t go in

Its all face to face, at the moment

Movinghouse2015 · 02/01/2021 10:28

My DD year 13 attends school 6th form, will be returning to school.

I'm WFH, but would not stop her going into school, if it's an option.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 02/01/2021 10:29

Oh sorry

Eldest is doing a masters and lives with his partner

Dd is going back to her drama school (about an hour from us) where she is doing a foundation year after she gets a negative text

Dh works from home

I work as an invigilator

We see my dad who is in our bubble, we will be obeying the rules as much as we can.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 02/01/2021 10:30

Oh for goodness sake

Last one I promise

Ds2 is in year 13

TammyTwoSwanson · 02/01/2021 10:31

Ds is in year 11 and due back on 11th. I'm CEV and we don't go anywhere (wfh, online shopping deliveries etc) so he is our weakest link too.
If we have to send him in, we have to. He has to do his mocks as soon as he goes back and they might be the basis of his GCSE grades so I think I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope he doesn't bring it home from his "bubble" of 200+ other students.

MargeryMcLatchie · 02/01/2021 10:41

Same here - except GCSE year, not A-level. Reluctantly feel she has no choice but to go in. Feel very concerned about it; if she or one of the rest of us gets seriously ill because of this decision, I will never forgive myself (or the Govt).

dappledsunshine · 02/01/2021 10:45

Yes I have a year 11 and feel that they've missed so much of an already vital time. I'm not comfortable but don't feel that home learning previously offered is adequate.

Fortyfifty · 02/01/2021 10:51

Y13 Dd at 6th form college. Online from the 4th. From the 11th to 15th Y13 invited in for testing and to resume face to face lessons.

They already wear masks in lessons.

Unescorted · 02/01/2021 11:06

We had an email to say DS Y11 is going online for next week starting 5th and then they will try to get them in on 11th. The school has been really good with COVID protocols - they are already split into 2 for timetabling and they have now split each side into year groups. Each bubble has staggered starts, finishes and breaks. DS sits next to the same person for all his lessons except music and French where he is sat on his own. The school has had 1 confirmed case of COVID in the admin staff who have their own bubble.

Given we are in an area with low infection numbers of

Tier 3, DD, year 13, will be going in. She would be going in from next week if they were allowed to open. Luckily has excellent on-line provision. We are not seeing my parents, both in their 80s and havent seen family over Christmas period.

annevonkleve · 02/01/2021 11:11

I am not exactly sure how the arrangements are working, but the current plans is remote learning next week while they do testing. If a student tests negative they can go in the following week. (DS is Y13).

Of course that could all change at 11.59pm tomorrow evening!

Monday is an INSET day so I assume we will hear more about testing after that. Or not.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 02/01/2021 19:48

It sounds like we’re all feeling concerned, I’m glad we’ve got another week to decide what do to. DH has copd and 86 year old MIL is in a support bubble with us, she’s not in great health so I really don’t want to put them at risk. On the other hand this is DS’s future we’re potentially messing with. I think we’ll send him in, but I’m very worried about it.

Yes, if school is open. He's year 11.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/01/2021 19:59

I will worry though, we live with my parents so will be shutting them away in their tiny annexe and hoping they don't have to wait too long to get jabbed.

Revengeofthepangolins · 02/01/2021 20:23

My year 13 will definitely be going if they will have him.

H1978 · 02/01/2021 20:37

Dd2 y11 going back on the 11th and mocks week after as far as I know.
Dd1 doing a teacher training course, in same school, back in from Monday.

BanginChoons · 02/01/2021 20:48

My 15 year old will be going in.

I'm a hcp. I also have 2 primary aged children who go school and also to breakfast and after school club.

Between us we mix with upwards of 150 people per day. We go to work, come home, and don't see other people. I'm very conscious that we may be the ones posing a risk.

Decembersnowfall · 02/01/2021 20:50

Yes if school is open...... year 11 here

Orangeblossom77777 · 02/01/2021 20:51

Yes, after I presume a covid test? I have a yr 11. Mocks on the 18th as well

HostaFireAndIce · 02/01/2021 20:58

I would not be at all surprised if schools don’t open to y11 and y13 as planned on the 11th. Assuming they do, how big is his school/college? How big are his sets? And the classrooms his lessons take place in? What will happen if he doesn’t go in? Will he be able to listen in to those lessons remotely? Personally I would send him in, but I am not clinically vulnerable so I totally get where you are coming from

iMatter · 02/01/2021 21:01

Hoping my Y11 boy will go in. Luckily he did his mocks before Christmas though. So uncertain for everyone.

cptartapp · 02/01/2021 21:03

One in year 11 and 13 here. Both in hopefully. RIsk v benefit for us it's a no brainer.

Randomrebel · 02/01/2021 21:05

DD year 11 did mocks in Dec. In the middle of the mocks the teachers had a Christmas lunch!!! A teacher had covid passed it to three kids who came in with symptoms (resulting in her bubble bursting and isolation for the last week of term).

I am CEV and we are WFH and shopping click & collect. I am hoping schools close for a couple of weeks and hoping they can really can get a proper handle on remote learning. Her mental health suffered so much last time I don’t want to say she can’t go in but I am so scared about her going into school. Her school are doing lateral flow tests on Tuesday 5th and it could be risky enough going in for those.

TonMoulin · 02/01/2021 21:08

Atm, dc2 is going on the 11th.
He is GCSE year and revising for his mocks. The mocks are planned for that week so I really don’t want him to miss that in case there are no exams this year again (which I strongly suspect is the way we are heading)
