Anyone else from Surrey worried about primary schools remaining open

Just wondering whether or not I’m overreacting, and how other people are feeling about this? Cases are currently high where I live, and other parts of Surrey are also increasing daily.

Yes very, we have higher rates where I am than much of London.

twinketwinkle · 02/01/2021 06:43

Yes me too. Might not send DC in on Monday. It's worryingly high

mrsknottschicken · 02/01/2021 06:48

Me too. Really hope there is a u turn.

user1471468988 · 02/01/2021 07:03

Yes me too. Hoping there is a u turn asap! Feel quite on edge about it. Can't just decide not to send them as I need to work however if that decision is taken for me i would welcome it and we will have to just get on with it.

HeronLanyon · 02/01/2021 07:03

I’m not in Surrey but In a zone1 tier 4 where primaries were to have been open until the latest u turn.
I’d be hopping mad if I were in any other tier 4 area with open primaries. If I were but my tier 4 area had low rates and I was not a key worker and wanted my children to attend I’d still be hopping mad that our shitshow of a government hadn’t released any analysis upon which they are basing the distinctions.
If the tiers themselves are no longer imposed because of data which is being consistently applied then the tier system is defunct.
If that’s right then we need to know what the criteria are which are being used to make these decisions.
Have lost all faith in this government. Lack of firm clear calm leadership and lack of evidence-based shared transparent info to the public.
In the face of london borough challenge just a u turn - no explanation, no sharing of reasons fir initial decision or the u turn.
A vacuum where our government is concerned.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 02/01/2021 08:40

There’s an online petition to close all schools in tier 4 and it’s got 500+ signatures in the last hour.

Rockbird · 02/01/2021 08:43

Yes very. DD1 is secondary so won't be back but DD2 is year 4 and due back on Monday. I also work in a Surrey primary and am CV so terrified of us both going back. I really don't know what to do.

Frazzled2207 · 02/01/2021 09:58

I'm worried and I'm in the north west (t4) where rates are far lower than yours ATM.
However our rates were sky high (800+) in October/November and we just about managed - some schools had lots of issues but some had almost none. Our primary had just one positive case that I'm aware of the whole term. Not blaming parents but it is interesting that the media seem to be hysterical once the south is badly hit but when it's 'just' the north, we get on with it, despite having exactly the same concerns.

You are right to be worried though, especially with the new strain about which the transmittability seems quite unclear, at best,

Freddiefox · 02/01/2021 10:40

Yes our rates are really high, higher then some of the neighbouring London boroughs. Show no signs of slowing done either.

CoveHid · 02/01/2021 10:44

Yes, we’ve decided not to send DC next week.

EagleFlight · 02/01/2021 10:46

I would be very surprised if the primaries stay open even if that’s how they start off next week.

Panickingpavlova · 02/01/2021 10:48

Not Surrey but our cases our higher than many London Boroughs.

All over local sm worried parents are breaking out with panic and concern.

Wouldn't it be soooo much easier to let people keep dc at home and give them choice?

TodgerStrunk · 02/01/2021 10:54

Wouldn't it be soooo much easier to let people keep dc at home and give them choice?

We had a letter saying the head had asked DfE if they could open online only (apart from vulnerable and KW children) as they were willing and prepared to do so - and the DfE said no.

At least they are 'willing and prepared' to switch to online only - because it looks like there's a chance that will happen with zero notice. We're Surrey/Hants border and near to Aldershot with its 1000 cases per 100k.

LegoAndLolDolls · 02/01/2021 10:54

I dont think they will stay open for long. It will all change soon enough.

Mind you it was nuts in Kent before Christmas and Kent schools managed. I give up guessing what will happen. It might change tomorrow going on past last minute desisions

Velvian · 02/01/2021 11:12

I'm in a tier 4 area and I still have no idea whether we will send the DC in on Monday or not. I'm 100% WFH, so I can still work while DC (7&9) entertain themselves. I'm not relishing the possibility of trying to do home schooling while working again, but needs must.
