How do you know? I hate posts like this. Scarr mongering
Flyingaway16 · 01/01/2021 23:09

John Radcliffe Oxford . Dr friend told me. I completely understand the fact I could be making it up and you don't know me or my friend but nearby hospitals now being cleared out for covid patients. She was told today. So I would guess will be in news tomorrow or next day?

Doesn’t this happen every winter? I’m not suggesting that makes it ok, it’s obviously shit, but I’m sure there are reports every year of people waiting on trollies in corridors because there are no beds free.

Flyingaway16 · 01/01/2021 23:15

@blaircorneliawaldorf no apparently this is not at all like normal.

I think the problem this time is that it will happen at multiple hospitals all at the same time, wheras in previous years it may just have been one or tow getting overwhelmed. They need to get those Nightingales up and running asap.
TillysMum02 · 01/01/2021 23:18

Worrying!

Barbie222 · 01/01/2021 23:20

JR is massive, there are not really any other hospitals of that size for the area.

BuildMeUpButtreCup · 01/01/2021 23:23

This has been happening in multiple hospitals for a many weeks

This time, hospitals have surged, cleared out wards to make new ICUs, and still they are full. That's what makes it different

user1471530109 · 01/01/2021 23:33

I wouldn't say the JR was south East. That's v worrying as I'd say that isn't actually in the areas we've been told cases are extremely high (like Kent and London).

JR is a massive hospital and I'd imagine is covering a huge area and is surrounded by lots of rural, cottage type hospitals that probably don't have the capacity to cope with covid cases rising.

Yet schools round here will be open next week.

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2021 23:33

Wakey Wakey. Where have you been for the last six months.

There will be no Nightingale Hospitals. There's no one to staff them. Its been known since April.

Brunt0n · 01/01/2021 23:33

And you had to come and gleefully share the news to further spread anxiety and fear?

Thewiseoneincognito · 01/01/2021 23:37

@Brunt0n where the hell is the glee in their posts? It’s a forum isn’t it.

Outer edge of SE, yes. I suppose you could also call it south central

jimmyhill · 02/01/2021 00:05

Debatable whether Oxford is the south east but the JR is absolutely a hospital for the south east. If you get very very ill in Reading - i.e. too ill for the Royal Berkshire - you go to the JR. IIRC it's a major trauma centre, so a lot of expertise and equipment there that smaller hospitals, even those with ICUs etc, may lack

Em777 · 02/01/2021 00:18

Here in Kent we’ve reached 137% of critical care bed capacity and patients are being helicoptered to Bristol, Leeds, and Southhampton

That data is absolutely not reflective of the current numbers.

Unsure33 · 02/01/2021 07:35

Trust me it’s bad in this area. Whole families going down with covid . And even young people in hospital. The ones I know are not through partying either. Through work and just household mixing for care bubbles. Which does indicate that the 2m and hand washing may just not be sufficient now with the new mutation.

Dreahil1 · 02/01/2021 07:46

OP. This does happen a lot. It’s the time of year “winter pressure” no beds at that point. A plan is usually crated to make more beds available. Weather that be to lodge patients or wait until the day for some patients to be discharged.

abitofpeace · 02/01/2021 07:52

My fear is that the Nightingales have no staff, if they do reopen then there will be untrained staff there. Ambulances would be sent there with the patients who have the elderly or those with ‘underlying health conditions’ so treatment would be very limited. This is what doctors say is happening in hospitals at the moment so just an extension of it (choosing who will get the treatment).

Brunt0n · 02/01/2021 07:57

It’s the fact they came running here to share what their ‘doctor friend’ said so quickly, before it’s in the news, like it’s some exciting bit of celeb gossip

I live near that hospital and I had an anxiety attack after reading this thread. People need to think about what the fuck they’re posting and they they’re posting it. I was already following all the rules and this has made me feel like shit. The people breaking the rules wont give a fuck about this, the same as they haven’t given a fuck all along. So if anyone think they’re doing a public service trying to scare people into better behaviour - stop kidding yourself. You’re just making the decent people have a more difficult time.

You can't 'lodge' patients within Covid. It's a highly infectious virus. Lodging patients is brutal anyway, but you can't do it with coronavirus like you might a broken hip!
Dreahil1 · 02/01/2021 08:03

@Chaotic45 no you can’t. Lodging is usually out of the current speciality. When beds get bad it’s looked at from a hospital as a whole not just the Covid wards! This does happen often.

I say that as I work on admission ward. Not all wards are full of Covid only some wards are cardiology but have positive cases in their side rooms.

So the other patients possibly would be lodged else where to create beds right?
