Am I ok to donate blood tomorrow as my wife has just been told to self isolate for 8 days by the covid app?

Nobody in our house has any symptoms.
She doesn't know who she was in contact with that tested positive.
Obviously I'm very keen to go but don't want to endanger anyone.
Any advice?
Thanks

Please don't go. Can you rearrange for a few weeks time?

It may be a small risk but you could pass Covid onto others at the centre, including the staff who would in turn end up isolating- impacting the whole set up.

I'd expect your pre screening questions will include something along the lines of 'has anyone you live with been asked to isolate.....' because the donation team have to minimise risk.

Sorry but no, they specifically ask about contacts/isolation when you arrive (I went last week). Have you followed the link on the text they send you just before, it would have been sent to you today? It says you can't donate til after the self isolation period.

NoMoreFlowers · 01/01/2021 22:32

No, of course you can’t do that. Please reschedule

greenlynx · 01/01/2021 22:34

I wouldn’t go, it’s better to be on a safe side.

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/01/2021 22:35

No I don't think you should, my doctors surgery wouldn't allow me to go for a smear test when one of my DC was isolating due to a class bubble closing. So presume it would be the same for you that they wouldn't want you to attend.

I would give them a call tomorrow before you set off to check. I received an appointment and donor health questionnaire through the post yesterday and it had a leaflet in relating to covid. It isn't very clear as to whether you can donate - it does say if a household member is isolating due to travel and isn't showing symptoms then it's fine to donate.

starlingsintheslipstream · 01/01/2021 22:38

No, you can't. We've had to cancel twice now because of other members of the household being in self-isolation. Just one of those things.

HunkyPunk · 01/01/2021 22:41

But as I understand it, and following the instructions from school, when ds had to self-isolate (as did his entire year) because of a positive case, the household of someone self-isolating can go about its normal business unless the person self-isolating starts showing symptoms, in which case the household has to self-isolate. Was this advice wrong?

No this is correct.. the household can go about their normal business (work etc) however I think in some settings (medical) they are being more (understandably) cautious about it.

Porcupineintherough · 01/01/2021 22:45

That's true for everyday things like work and shopping @HunkyPunk but it's not necessarily true for giving blood.

Lifeispassingby · 01/01/2021 22:46

You don’t need to isolate just your wife does. That said it depends how you feel about it. Obviously it would be safer if you didn’t but you can

starlingsintheslipstream · 01/01/2021 22:51

From blood.co.uk:
"- If you are/have been in self-isolation or someone in your household is in isolation, you must wait until the end of the isolation period before coming to donate. Please make sure it is at least 14 days from the first day of isolation and you have no symptoms before attending session. "

HunkyPunk · 01/01/2021 22:52

Ah, ok. Thanks for clarifications!

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 01/01/2021 22:57

No, you definitely can't - I was told to cancel for this very reason.

GreenBacon · 02/01/2021 00:58

Thanks all, I've rescheduled for a month's time.

Thanks for donating OP, donated blood saved my life.

GreenBacon · 02/01/2021 01:30

Hi @Lumene
That's very kind. I love to donate as often as I can. You never know when you might need some yourself.
