Just heard of a couple of retired GPs friend of a friend knows who were about to give Cv19 vaccinations. Now they cannot start that as they have to look after their grandchildren as parents must work and the school closed.Very very bad thinking by the state over all this.

Benjispruce2 · 04/01/2021 17:07

Elderly looking after children is ill advised in the circumstances isn’t it?

CrispySock · 04/01/2021 17:25

Absolutely. Elderly looking after grandkids is a big no no.

Xenia · 04/01/2021 17:38

It is a big yes yes actually - "parents are able to form a childcare bubble with one other household for the purposes of informal childcare, where the child is 13 or under".

Either you suffer total financial destruction and are out of the streets starving or the grand parents care for the children as schools are closed so the parents can work to pay the rent or mortgage. Of course the grandparents will mind the children and it is 100% lawful too.

I see £30m of one week of school dinners will be thrown away due to the announcement. Too perishable and short notice for food banks too.

Truly indeed have we found the magic money tree.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should, especially when this government is making the rules! If they didn’t have parents alive, other plans would have to be put in place.

Don’t kill Granny

Parker231 · 04/01/2021 18:03

I have friends forming bubbles with other parents but with a SAHP to help with childcare but are trying to avoid asking and risking grandparents.

So what’s the most ridiculous claim to “key worker” status in your school? So far I’ve got a freelance video editor and one which is so specific I can’t mention as it’ll be identifying. Suffice to say people are really taking the piss. And the more piss they take, the longer we will be in this and the more unequal the outcomes for the rest of the kids will be.

Agree. You’re exposing grandparents to whatever you pick up from work/public transport etc if you use them as childcare. I wouldnt do it, couldn’t live with myself if they caught it and ended up hospitalised.
BungleandGeorge · 04/01/2021 18:59

A lot of older people are not shielding. A lot of grandparents are of working age. A lot of grandparents are seeing their grandchildren anyway. Some grandparents have had the vaccine or the infection recently. Some parents are wearing proper full protective PPE. Some parents have had the vaccine and routinely do lateral flow tests. Older children could easily stay 1.5 metres away, have lots of time outside, windows open etc. Many grandparents work- as TAs and teachers, In supermarkets and shops, as HCP. The risk of catching it from a grandchild isn’t that enormous whether it’s an acceptable risk depends a lot on individual circumstances.

Now I never thought I'd agree with you on anything Xenia - but here we are. If only there'd been a bit of foresight.

Yup! I bet they aren’t having to throw any school dinners away in Scotland where they shares their plans for January weeks ago.
