It does say in this article that there was an underlying health condition. How terribly sad 😞

It's just awful
This account on twitter is collating all the current statistics from the government website about children being admitted with covid

Thank you for the link. I think it's really, really important that we keep talking about this. Paragraph

Absolutely heart breaking.

And yet we are supposed to send our children into covid breeding grounds from Monday (unless you're in london)

And threads about this keep getting deleted by mNHQ.

Well fuck MNHQ and fuck the government. Oh and while I'm at it, fuck my OH who insists that my child is going to school next week

Fortherosesjoni70 · 01/01/2021 22:19

How many threads have they deleted now? Shocked!

FoxinaScarf · 01/01/2021 22:21

Underlying conditions can be so minor though. My DS has Coeliac disease, completely not likely to restrict his life or health at all but I worry if for some terrible reason he dies of COVID it will just be dismissed as "Oh well, child had an underlying condition so probably would have died anyway, my child has no conditions so I'm alright Jack".
Makes my blood boil.

apeneu · 01/01/2021 22:23

This is very concerning

I know. Its so easy to say this. It could be nothing.
nimbuscloud · 01/01/2021 22:30

Yes, why are threads being deleted ?

Rudolphian · 01/01/2021 22:30

My 6 year old has ' underlying health conditions '. But shes not on her death bed or anything. If you looked at her you wouldn't know she had anything. Shes active and usually goes to multiple clubs etc. Just a normal kid. I just feel like it gives a false representation of the facts.
I hate that line.

NowellSingWe · 01/01/2021 22:32

Goady threads about schools are being deleted. What else is?

Agoodbriskwalk · 01/01/2021 22:59

So sad - those poor parents. No matter how seriously unwell the child was in the first place, they've lost their baby, and that's devastating.

I agree. The 8 year old child may have just had asthma or something else that it s a fairly common childhood condition.

Threads can stay up there loads now

Tigress and longcovidkids have been tracking hospital admissions amongst children using government data. Child admissions seem to be at the 3000 mark so have been lower than adults so far but we simply don’t know how the new strain will affect things...

PowerslidePanda · 02/01/2021 09:39

Can I just point out - the thread title says "dies of covid" but the article says "dies with Covid".

I'm not disputing that covid may have been the cause - but it could equally have been the underlying condition - it's not clear from the article.

ADRIENNEthroughbloodshoteyes · 02/01/2021 09:46

I’m totally freaked out too.

Agree with the comments regarding “had underlying condition” statement being ridiculously sweeping and not helpful. My kids both have asthma and weird allergy triggers so carry epipens. But they are in rude health and were taken off the CEV list by their consultant in September. I feel like sending kids back to school next week is sending them into the unknown. These are our children, I do not want them in a social experiment!!

Cornettoninja · 02/01/2021 09:47

It’s awful and makes my blood run cold; but it still appears to be very rare for covid to be fatal in children. For obvious reasons we don’t get much detail around these younger deaths, and this detail is important for us to be able to make our own risk assessments.

I’m concerned about the new variant and schools being open but right now I think that this news is tragic but not indicative of a greater risk generally.

Baileysforchristmas · 02/01/2021 09:49

@PowerslidePanda I agree, it doesn’t give enough information, the girl could’ve had a terminal illness before Covid, it’s tragic an 8 year old girl has died from any illness, poor family but I don’t think it’s helpful to make assumptions and panic.

Frazzled2207 · 02/01/2021 09:50

@Cornettoninja
Agree. This is absolutely tragic but to my knowledge 2 children have died of covid in the UK since the beginning.
How many have died of other causes? How many have died in accidents?
I do think greater transparency is needed as to the risk in children but I still think the risk to their life is extremely small and overall they are no more likely to die this year than in any other year.

agree the child could have been in hospital for a totally unrelated reason and died of that illness - but happened to catch covid in hospital.
Polkadotties · 02/01/2021 09:53

I agree, the wording is very important.
This poor child could have been terminally ill, unfortunately like many children, and could have picked up covid in hospital.
Please note. I am in no way trying to belittle their death, it is a tragedy. Just like the tragedy of thousands of children dying every year.

AldiIsla · 02/01/2021 09:55

Poor child. My thoughts are with their family and friends.

Our schools are closed in Scotland. We're staying home, making use of our garden and I'm a prepper so won't be going to shops for a few weeks.

The number of kids being ill is going up. Our local hospital (west coast) has queues of ambulances so it's having a knock on effect to people needing help for other medical stuff.

Equally, she could have had asthma and caught COVID and died. But for now we don’t know. We don’t seem to know anything about this new variant and what it may do differently yet. That’s scary.

And, as the gov is under such pressure to keep schools open, there is a strong element of mistrust, for me anyway, in the information shared.
