Who is dying? Are the vulnerable shielding?

I can’t find any data on the deaths.

I can only find a number but no information about ages etc.

Who exactly is dying from Covid? Is it people who are ill in hospital? Elderly people? Vulnerable?

Or is it the young? Young with health conditions?

Can anyone shed any light.

I was so shocked to see the death figures yesterday are nearly back up to 1000...! 😞

Check out the first post of the daily data thread - there are lots of links on there that should answer your questions. NHS England definitely release their own daily figures that breaks things down although they allocate the figures to the actual day they occur so the most recent numbers can fluctuate quite a bit for a while.

I’m afraid I deleted my links in a bid to stop drowning in shitty news so much.

@Cornettoninja

Thank you, where would I find that?

There is a link to a spreadsheet on the gov website. It's mostly the over 65's who are dying with much smaller numbers in the under 50's

The spreadsheet is updated weekly and is a week behind ish

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 01/01/2021 14:16

I wondered this the other day. I haven’t heard about it ripping through the old peoples homes like last year. Most elderly are staying hone a lot (or are they?) If it was younger people then there would definitely be more news coverage because it’s more ‘tragic’.
The only people I know of in last month are someone in 40’s with terminal cancer - I think she died with it rather than of it. And an elderly gentleman in late 80’s who presumable caught it from carers as he lived at home.

Yes, shielding has been reactivated in all tier 4 areas.

It's shielding 'lite' though as outdoor daily exercise/leisure is permitted (but urged to stick to quiet times in uncrowded places; and to meet as few people as possible, though the 'one other' isn't outright banned)

Only other reason to leave home is for medical appointments which have to be face to face

SquigglePigs · 01/01/2021 14:20

People who were shielding at the start and are now Tier 4 have been asked to shield again.

Recommended, not asked.

Aramox · 01/01/2021 14:45

It’s lots of pple in their 60s and 70s at the moment and a fair few in their 50s.

Abraxan · 01/01/2021 14:49

Are the Vulnerable shielded?

In tier 4 those who are CEV are advised to shield if possible.
They are advised they should not go to work and, if cannot wfh, should ask their work places to make other arrangements for them or furlough. In tier 3 it is suggested they work from home if they can. If not possible they should ask their employers to make risk assessments and, if possible, enable them to work as safely as possible.

The next group down, clinically vulnerable, are expected to work as normal regardless of tier.

This is the breakdown of NHS England hospital deaths announced today
www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/01/COVID-19-daily-announced-deaths-1-January-2021.xlsx

Eccle80 · 01/01/2021 15:01

From those figures, 57% are 80+ and 95% are 60+ of the hospital deaths announced today

SoscaredforJan · 01/01/2021 15:16

Well I’m vulnerable because I’m fat and I have to send my children to school even though I am more than happy to homeschool them until it all cools down a bit (ex teacher). However, they have to go with threats of fines. So if I die I will be classed as dying with an underlying condition even though there is nothing wrong with me apart from a bit of podge (after effect of 10 miscarriages and fertility treatment which I’m working on)

TheGreatWave · 01/01/2021 16:05

My MIL is currently in hospital, has been for nearly 5 weeks and is likely to be in for another couple at least. She won't be vaccinated until she is discharged.

She is at a lot more risk there than she would be at home.

SchrodingersUnicorn · 01/01/2021 16:37

Well I'm a teacher who is CV (very nearly ECV) in a tier 4 area with schools going back next week.
No social distancing, no masks in classrooms and close contacts of positive cases in. And my DD at a different school so germs from there too.
I'd say it's probably people like me - vulnerable but with no option to shield because we are teachers, parents, nurses, bus drivers.
Shield the vulnerable doesn't work because the vast majority of the vulnerable - diabetics, heart conditions, neuro conditions, obesity, immunosuppressed - aren't in the shielding group. We are the people who are keeping the hospitals, the schools, the transport system going. And certainly those of us in school are not being afforded any protections.

An 8 year old died today sadly. If transmission numbers keep going up there will be increased deaths in every age group.

I'm clinically extremely vulnerable (blood cancer) and I'm in tier 4 and supposed to shield, but apparently it's safe for my kids to go to school when they open again.
So I guess this is a big reason why people like me are dying. I'm in my 30s.

CountessFrog · 01/01/2021 19:02

If 95% are over 60 and 57% over 80 then it’s unlikely to be teaching in classrooms that has led to at least 57% of those deaths.

The 38% between 60-80 are also much less likely to be employed than somebody a decade younger.

I don’t understand where they are catching it, though I know of a man aged 80 who narrowly missed catching it from his 55 year old daughter (who recovered quickly) and I have a 70 odd year old MIL who refuses to follow rules.

itsgettingweird · 01/01/2021 19:13

From what I've read the 8yo had underlying health conditions.

Still incredibly sad though.

In fact all those under 50 who were reported in today's total who died had underlying conditions.

But.... looking at the data on the table linked above there does seem to be a rise in younger people dying.

A 55yo teacher has died as well - with no underlying conditions.

Unsure33 · 01/01/2021 19:17

@TammyTwoSwanson

My DIL is CEV as well and she is not sending her children back to school . Last time she did a letter and explained why and had no fines .

Unsure33 · 01/01/2021 19:18

But an underlying health condition could be diabetes and millions of people live a long life with diabetes and treatment so to me covid still killed them .

Unsure33 · 01/01/2021 19:21

@SchrodingersUnicorn

Exactly that’s why I get annoyed when people say they just want to get on with their lives .

Their boss, the person behind the bar , the bus driver , the teacher or the doctor could all have invisible illnesses.

lockdownromance · 01/01/2021 19:23

I am not surprised that the older people are dying. I have seen them in hairdressers, Wetherspoons, shops, busses, cafes, garden centres and shops in busy times. My parents are avoiding all of the above at the moment and have been really careful and they haven't caught it yet. Both have underlying conditions but are otherwise fit over 70's.
