Would you pay privately for a vaccine?

If so, what's your reasoning and how much would you pay?

No as I am 33 and have no underlying health conditions. I would not want to take away from the stocks for those who need it. In fact, if it helped us get back to normal more quickly, I’d rather pay for someone vulnerable to get it more quickly! (Wouldn’t help with the lack of stock issue though).

@annevonkleve

They are not available privately, the manufacturers will only sell to governments, so it's academic.
You really think that won’t change once supplies are easy to come by?!
2boysand1princess · 01/01/2021 20:36

If for some reason they decided not vaccinate the young and healthy then yes I would pay privately probably up to 1k. I wouldn’t until all the phase 1 people who have priority were vaccinated. I am the last category in the last phase and if they decided to ditch that group then yes I’d pay.

Dontrainonmyparade · 01/01/2021 20:42

I’ve had it (HCP). We would pay for my DH to have it though, if circs were such that it was available to get privately. I thought £250 per dose would probably be a likely cost.

SpeckledyHen · 01/01/2021 20:47

Yes , but only if it wasn’t taking away a NHS one . I would pay £100 , a bit more than the pneumonia jab .

Monkeytennis97 · 01/01/2021 20:48

Yes I'd pay up to £1000 each for our family of 4 to have it.

TheFairyCaravan · 01/01/2021 20:52

Yes we would. DS2 has already had it because he’s a nurse. If it meant that the rest of us could get it done, without taking them away from the NHS, we’d pay up to £200 each.

Aprilrainbow · 01/01/2021 20:59

Watch out for fake vaccines.

Calmandmeasured1 · 01/01/2021 21:21

I wouldn't pay because we don't have enough doses for everyone and I wouldn't wish to queue-jump over the more vulnerable.

patient101 · 01/01/2021 21:41

Yes, because the problem the NHS has is having enough healthcare professionals and facilities to actually the get the vaccine (of which they have enough for the whole population already) into people.
If private doctors can provide an additional route for getting the vaccine (of which the country has plenty now) into people then that route should be used as well.
Really people should be aware that now AZ oxford has been approved and the UK has brought enough for everyone, the problem is not one of scarcity of the vaccine, but how to get it into people quickly enough.
All healthcare professionals should be used, no matter what sector, to get as many vaccinated as soon/quickly as possible. It doesn't make sense not to use qualified healthcare professionals who are willing and able to administer the vaccine.

blue25 · 01/01/2021 21:44

Yes definitely. I’d pay £1000 each.

patient101 · 01/01/2021 22:32

Maybe people on the priority list could take their invitation letter to a private clinic to maximise the number of places giving the vaccine without it being a queue jumping situation. Since the vaccine cost is only a few pounds there does need to be a check in place to prevent profiteering. It should not cost more than £100 since a private gp appointment plus vaccine cost would not exceed that normally.

If there was plenty of supply then yes, but obviously not while vulnerable people are waiting.

We will be paying for my FIL who is in India plus his carer, cook and their family. He is 86 and relays on them for shopping, cooking, cleaning and some personal care.

They go to several houses and the risk has us worried sick. We will probably end up paying for 12 people in total, things are just so different there. They haven't announced the rollout plan there yet so it might change.

CarlottaValdez · 02/01/2021 06:57

I paid for DS to have chicken pox and meningitis vaccines and pay for us all to get the flu one every year. If it was definitely ethical then no problem paying but at the moment I wouldn’t.

SpikySara · 02/01/2021 08:28

I paid £250 for my DC to be vaccinated against chicken pox so would happily pay the same or more to get each of us vaccinated against Covid.
