Those who wash fruit and veg

Recently read that some people are washing fruit in an effort to stop transmission.

Does this mean you bleach the food or wash with soap and water or wipe down with a dettol cloth?

This has amazed me... I’d feel worried eating something covered in soap like that?! Surely better to just buy fruit in a packet or leave it a couple of days?

I’ve no idea on transmission rates from hard surfaces like that but surely everyone would have it anyway if you can literally get it from a piece of fruit. My mind has been boggled!

@MiddleClassProblem as I said, work on your reading comprehension because right now, it's about GCSE level

Namechangebuttercup · 01/01/2021 23:44

This has got me thinking that almost never got sick as a kid, other than mumps, chicken pox and rubellla.

I always attributed that to the fact I used to eat soil (middle of countryside) until I was about 4. I figured it boosted my immune system! There may have been sheep or deer poo particles in it, but unlikely to have been any pesticides!

What’s wrong with GCSE level? 😂

Ninkanink · 01/01/2021 23:50

I wash fruit and veg, with water only, as a matter of course. But that’s nothing to do with covid. Lately we’re buying organic direct from farmers so if I didn’t there’d be soil and dirt all over it!

BlackeyedSusan · 02/01/2021 00:10

washing up liquid, like washing up. but with cold water. rinse afterwards.

always have done if from a shop. straight off the tree or bush though at home as long as no visible birdshit.

Somewhereelsewhere · 02/01/2021 00:43

You don’t have to have grown up I’m the countryside to know fruit and veg needs a wash. Just spend 20mins in a fruit and veg aisle and watch people handle the food, sneeze and cough all over it etc.:’

FunkBus · 02/01/2021 01:31

@MiddleClassProblem

Nothing, but if you are going to get in a huff about what people are saying to you, you should probably make sure you know what they're actually saying.

BashfulClam · 02/01/2021 01:36

I was in the customer toilets in Asda washing my hands a few years ago. A woman came out of the cubicle adjusting her dress, she didn’t wash her hands. Guess who I saw rifling through unwrapped veg a few minutes later 🤮. I wash things in water only.

BrickFireplace · 02/01/2021 08:17

I’ve always rinsed apples and grapes under the tap before eating, no soap though. Probably doesn’t do much but still persist!

I’ve always rinsed obvious dirt off veg but seems a bit pointless for stuff you’re going to peel. I’m probably not as diligent as I should be but given most of it is going to spend time in a hot oven or boiling water I’m fairly relaxed about it.

MiddleClassProblem · 02/01/2021 10:13

@FunkBus

Several people have read the same. You could clarify it if you wanted to be understood but you decided to be patronising followed by some snobbery about education level.

Benjispruce2 · 02/01/2021 10:16

I’ve always washed fruit and veg that’s not going to be peeled or cooked. It’s nothing to do with coronavirus. I wash with water and washing up liquid and here’s the mind blowing part...... I rinse the soap off!!!

Year2021 · 02/01/2021 10:31

Are people actually arguing about fruit and vegetables you should calm down for your own sanity

Benjispruce2 · 02/01/2021 11:33

Who’s arguing?

Year2021 · 02/01/2021 12:45

Read the messages above

MiddleClassProblem · 02/01/2021 12:56

@Year2021 not arguing about fruit and veg. Arguing about people being put in boxes because of where they live. And then being told I’m not smart enough to understand and GCSE English will not suffice to the comprehension levels of such a superior post when others have read it exactly the same as me.

FunkBus · 02/01/2021 13:08

@MiddleClassProblem

Geez are you still going?

MiddleClassProblem · 02/01/2021 13:18

More belittling attempts. This one with a sprinkling of hypocrisy.

Zoflorabore · 02/01/2021 15:03

Jeez people are arguing over washing fruit and vegetables. I buy this from Amazon it’s a couple of quid.

Oblomov20 · 02/01/2021 15:10

I've never washed any fruit or veg. Never will either.

TopBants · 02/01/2021 16:07

Anyone from the countryside knows this doesn't mean, 'No one from the city knows this.' It just means that more people from the city won't know it.

Like if I were to say that everyone in France knows how to pronounce croissant correctly. That doesn't suggest that no one from outside France does.

Right but if you are talking in terms of a poll because you’d like to see the outcome it does imply that you think it will be swayed one way. If you’re expecting a poll with a 50/50 outcome it’s rather pointless to suggest doing one just to prove people just know what they know regardless of are when no one has suggested otherwise.
Haffiana · 02/01/2021 16:39

In many countries where our fruit is grown, there are public information films on the tv that suggest that all fruit should be washed in a bowl of cold water with a few drops of washing up liquid in it before being put away in fruit bowls or fridge.

This is in order to remove pesticides and in some cases insect eggs and faecal matter.

TopBants · 02/01/2021 19:22

I think the implication is that all country dwellers would wash fruit and veg (which I doubt to be honest- you can dwell in the countryside and still have nothing to do with farming or fruit/veg harvest) and that fewer city dwellers would.

MiddleClassProblem · 02/01/2021 19:30

Exactly

Nohomemadecandles · 02/01/2021 19:39

I've always rinsed fruit. And veg if it's not going to be peeled
