What is the likelihood of us getting it...

Hi all.

So on Christmas Day, my partner was driving to his parents to drop of gifts on their doorstep. On the way, a very distant and old friend saw him on the road, flashed him down to stop (DP didn't know the car as it's a new one) so DP pulled over.
Old friend got out, came up to the window to chat but my DP rolled down the window briefly, they exchanged a few words and then went on about their day.

Fast forward to now - through general conversation; the old 'friend' has just advised my partner that he tested positive after feeling unwell Christmas Day night.

I am so angry. He didn't think to tell us. We have been sticking to rules but seeing friends and family for walks outside; following guidelines.

What is the likelihood that my DP would have caught / could currently have covid..?

I know it could be me over reacting but I'm now terrified..

Trying to organise a test in the morning for us both.

I would imagine it is very very small, especially as now 7 days have passed. Why are you so angry about it? He wasn’t to know, according to your post. Furthermore, unless you actually have symptoms, why would you get tested?

thepeopleversuswork · 01/01/2021 01:24

In the circumstances you've described and given that a week has passed I'd say the chances are fairly small now.

Forgetaboutme · 01/01/2021 01:30

Very slim chance I would guess but obviously not impossible. My son was out a few hours walk with a boy who tested positive for covid the next days (had symptoms but never told anyone thinking it was just a cold) my son never caught it. I also know of a few households where people living together haven't caught it off family....But then again, the new strain is meant to be more contagious. Try not to worry till your test.

It's been 7 days since your dh saw his friend. He might have fallen into the category of close contact & therefore expected to isolate, but it depends how close friend was to the car I guess.

Anyway, either way your dh would be finishing his isolation period in 3 days, so fairly remote chance I would reckon. Maybe be extra cautious over the next couple of days.

There's no point I testing unless ou have symptoms (unless you're in an area where they're asking people without symptoms to get tested). Just isolate from the date if contact for 10 days,

middleager · 01/01/2021 01:40

But if you don't have any symptoms there's no need to arrange tests.

My son had Covid but none of us had tests as we kept our distance and had no symptoms.

SomethingsGottaChange · 01/01/2021 01:42

I would say a High chance

WhoseThatGirl · 01/01/2021 01:43

If it was a just few words then he isn’t a close contact. He doesn’t need to isolate unless track and trace gets in touch.

ILovesPeanuts · 01/01/2021 01:48

Do you mean a private test? You can't have a NHS one without one or more of the 3 specific symptoms.
Risk sounds very low.
