If the doctor's comments in the other thread don't make you think twice about breaking COVID rules maybe this will...

Tragedy as man, 62, who is one half of Britain's first married couple with Down's syndrome catches Covid-19 and 'doctors don't think he can recover'

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9101617/Husband-62-one-half-Britains-Downs-syndrome-couple-marry-COVID-19.html

And for anyone thinking "yeah - but he's got an underlying health condition" perhaps they could explain why his life is less valuable than yours? Or your NYE party?

Heartbreaking

Deux · 31/12/2020 12:58

The article says he caught it in hospital. Given that one in three infected people are asymptomatic it could have been caught from a member of hospital staff.

So??? Hospital staff have to go to supermarkets. Hospital staff have children in school.

We are all connected - and your actions can affect anyone.

Absolutely tragic, just like all the Down's syndrome babies who are terminated (even though they don't have any major health concerns).

Sitt · 31/12/2020 13:05

How terribly sad.

How many people who are having new years’ eve parties are reading this board, do you think?

Dyrne · 31/12/2020 13:06

This is a weird tactic, OP. People who are breaking the rules know they are risking spreading COVID further and have decided (for whatever reason) that they don’t give a shit.

There are dozens of news stories like this every day - why would this one in particular stand out to you as “ah ha, they will definitely change their minds after reading this one!”?

Agreed. It would make more sense if the story was that this poor man caught Covid in the supermarket booze aisle. Instead he caught it in hospital where they’re supposed to have infection control measures far greater than anywhere else.
TrafficKone · 31/12/2020 13:11

That’s a terribly sad case but (unfortunately) this thread is not going to stop anyone who is having a party in breach of the rules. Some people just don’t give a shit.

Gotta try. If it makes one person stop - that could block a chain of onward transmission with someone like this at the end of it.

It's also not going to stop all the people that follow the rules and do what they are asked to, from going back to work in schools on Monday. Or stop them sending in their child, despite a massive rise in cases, as if they don't they get fined.

Lots of people do give a shit and are trying to do the right thing.

Sitt · 31/12/2020 13:44

Tbh there is plenty of scope for people to pass on the virus within the rules, just doing what they have to do like going to work and school and on public transport. This whole “blood on your hands” thing is poisonous.

Lairyfightzzzz · 31/12/2020 13:44

The fact is the matter that while schools are open no one is going to pay attention

You may not like that, you may not agree with it (I don't) but that's how it is IMO.

halfpasteleven · 31/12/2020 13:45

@Lairyfightzzzz
Totally agree.

Sitt · 31/12/2020 13:47

I don’t think so much that people aren’t going to pay attention whilst schools are open, but as long as they are that is far more likely to be a source of transmission. There’s no need to create a moral issue out of people obeying the law and sending their children to school.

Lairyfightzzzz · 31/12/2020 13:49

There’s no need to create a moral issue out of people obeying the law and sending their children to school.

That wasn't quite what I meant, it was more that I think (whether consciously or not) while schools are open people feel it is "safer" than it was last time and they have a green light to do other things that they wouldn't previously have done.

At the very least, I think parents who wish to withdraw their children should have the option to do so without fines or deregiatration, at least until the Spring.

Ultimatecougar · 31/12/2020 13:50

Well he didn't catch it from someone who had been to a NYE party did he?

The virus spreads even if you follow the rules, just more slowly. And most people are following them. It's not all the fault of people having parties.

PlanDeRaccordement · 31/12/2020 13:52

The “rules” only slow down the spread, they do not stop it. So this whole idea that people are catching Covid only from rule breakers is bonkers.

Sitt · 31/12/2020 13:53

Yes I understood perfectly what you meant Lairyfightzzzz, and I don’t agree that that is necessarily the root cause when there are plenty of ways transmission can occur while people obey the law

MarcelineMissouri · 31/12/2020 14:03

Totally agree with this. I’m so tired of the posts on here from people certain that their moral preachy words will somehow do anything other than just get peoples backs up. I genuinely believe that the vast majority of people in this country are doing their very best to follow the rules as far as possible. Those that are going as far as throwing big nye parties are really not going to be interested in posts like these.

Yes, and the fault is to a considerable extent the government's if they get their advice and rules wrong.

We can still try to help the situation on an individual basis going forward, though.

Sitt · 31/12/2020 14:13

“ We can still try to help the situation on an individual basis going forward, though.”

At no point did I suggest otherwise. I don’t believe this sort of post makes any difference to people’s behaviour, however.

Ontopofthesunset · 31/12/2020 14:18

To be honest if you haven't realised by now that this disease can have serious consequences for many people, I don't think a thread on Mumsnet will change your mind. People who are being careful will continue to be careful. People who are not, for whatever reason (youth, a desire to take their own risks, die-hard libertarians), will carry on not being careful.

With an extra dollop of anxiety that they are potentially selfish murdering arseholes, which they shouldn’t be made to feel

trappedsincesundaymorn · 31/12/2020 14:25

Or it could make you think twice about going to hospital, which may cause more harm than good.
