Vaccinations volunteering

Chickenfingers · 30/12/2020 21:37

Anyone else volunteering with the vaccinations?

I'm wanting to help out. I have no medical background aside from being a workplace first aider.

I'm on maternity leave with no childcare available so would need to be evenings or weekends.

Anyone able to shed any light if this is possible?

I’m interested as well. I’m a TA but I work with a little girl who is T1 diabetic so spend a lot of time giving injections.

From my point of view that's some helpful experience. The closest I've come is having to give myself blood thinner injections after my C-section!

I found what looks to be a genuine link if you're interested. It took me absolutely ages to find though, went round in circles. Shouldn't have been this difficult.

I think to do actual injections actually I think you need to join St John's but I'm not entirely sure, it's difficult to find the right info.

Our local town residents' association was asking for and coordinating volunteers, at the request of the CCG. They need a lot of people to organise queues, assist those with mobility issues and all manner of clerical roles, apparently, actual consent and giving of the jabs will understandably only be done by those who are fo ally trained but they were certainly asking for volunteers. Have you tried asking on a local Facebook group? Or your local councillor?

AnImposter · 30/12/2020 22:05

Iv been giving them. All the staff in our centre are from local doctors surgeries though. We have had ALOT of Pfizer specific training. I imagine the Oxford work will start this week. Don't know what all the other places are doing mind you.

@Chickenfingers

Was the scariest thing I’ve ever had to do, I was a dental nurse before I had my children so I’m not squeamish at all but injecting a 4 year old who was not my own was terrifying!

Will have a look at the link, I’m obviously DBS checked as well if that helps!

unicornparty · 30/12/2020 23:06

It looks like you need an NVQ in a relevant subject to apply for even the basic level.

didireallysaythat · 30/12/2020 23:12

They are looking for people to direct cars and parking?

Thankyou. As well as being on maternity I'm also going through redundancy so can't apply for any paid roles until my notice in April, but I'll see if they're still around then.

Well done for the doing it though, I'm sure it got easier!

I'll have a look at the parking stuff, I guess every little helps. I hear so much about there being more vaccines than staff to administer them that I wanted to help with that.

I'd think of it like volunteering for London 2012 - some people got to hold the kit boxes at the start of the 100m final and others were in Weymouth telling spectators which way to go.

Certain roles might not seem as critical as others, but if they are roles which need filling to make this process happen, then they are critical. Thank you in advance for giving up your time.

RaggieDolls · 31/12/2020 08:22

Thanks for the link @Chickenfingers. I've been looking for it without success! I'd like to help where I can.

whenwillthemadnessend · 31/12/2020 08:42

Yes I'm applied through nhs as I'm an ex veterinary nurse and I do t want to waste my experience. I'm happy to help or give the vaccine.

Chickenfingers · 31/12/2020 09:27

Good to see more wanting to volunteer.

I just hope I can find something that works around my time, I guess there's no harm in asking!

Depending on where you are in the country your local CVS may well be recruiting for volunteers to be vaccine marshals to support patient flow etc. NAVCA are the national umbrella body for voluntary sector/local infrastructure organisations and you may be able to find your local centre via this website

I applied through St John ambulance but have heard nothing back, not even an acknowledgement. I'm wondering if I completed it properly on my phone so might try again.

Itsap · 31/12/2020 11:01

I'm interested in volunteering too, in a non-clinical way - directing people, sorting paperwork, that sort of thing. One of the links above was asking for a commitment of 2x6 hours a month, which might be doable for me around work and childcare, so I'll have a further look.

That's great thankyou, I'll have a look at that too 😊

I thought I'd read that, 2x6 hours would be easy, I was thinking of a 6pm-12am mid any evening would work well for me, means I have to do the teatime clean up haha

Or don't have to even. Clearly I need the sleep though Grin

My MIL's neighbours (random I know) helped with organising queues and parking and paperwork. I think lots of relatively unskilled people will be needed for things like that.

ohfourfoxache · 01/01/2021 01:37

NHS Professionals are recruiting

I registered my interest in mid-late November, have just had a video interview and received online training links today. Apparently they will provide vaccination training

I’m a non-clinical NHS worker and at the moment there don’t seem to have been any barriers to applying. Looks like the minimum requirement is an NVQ ?level 3 (whatever is equivalent to 2 A levels)
