Anyone know why the Oxford vaccine is not being used tomorrow?

Just that really. I mean there is a catastrophe going on nationally. Why aren't we using it right now?

The initial doses of the Oxford jab are due to be dispatched from Germany, with a large proportion then manufactured in the UK.

A specific schedule is difficult to establish as batches need to be quality approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

I don't understand why they weren't sent and approved last week in anticipation.

Because each individual batch of doses needs to be checked.

Right but why couldn't they be checked last week or the week before?

It was probably in the process of being checked or wasn't ready yet? I don't think anyone is dilly dallying about right now... Except maybe Boris.

I think they said at the press conference this morning that the instructions need to be drawn up in line with what has been authorised by the MHRA today I.e. full dose then second dose 4-12 weeks later.

I don't accuse schools of being deliberately slow. But we need the effect opposite given the crisis. Israel is vaccinating at three times the speed we are for example.

exact opposite

Israel's population is about the same as London 9 million. So that is the same argument as why can't we do what New Zealand did and stop the virus completely.

Plus do you really want the vaccine sent out without appropriate instructions?

We will get a smaller batch now. Then from the middle of January we will 2 million doses a week. So things will really step up then.

As Germany managed to hospitalise 8 carers by giving the wrong dosage of Pfizer jab I would rather we were this careful.

jomaIone · 30/12/2020 20:58

Yea it doesn't just come ready made in a syringe with needle locked and loaded. Instructions are needed, training is needed. It takes time.

I don't think that comparison works. Israel is vaccinating 150,00 a day. You might argue we could do many more given our larger population.

Why would anything be sent out without appropriate instructions? My point is that everything could have been set up so that the minute it was approved we could start using it.

Once the oxford vaccine is up and running we will be able to vaccinate more than that a week.

You question about why the vaccine isn't already labelled and rread to use has been answered. Read the posts.
